The 2021 Toyota Tundra Is Consumer Report’s Most Reliable Truck

by Gabrielle DeSantis

Sure, you can call the 2021 Toyota Tundra old, as long as you mean it as old reliable. The aging Toyota Tundra just scored a significant victory as the most reliable full-size truck for 2021. You can really depend on this option to hold up against rivals.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra reliable?

Yes, the 2021 Toyota Tundra is the most reliable full-size truck you can buy. According to Pickup Truck Talk, the Tundra excels with high predicted reliability ratings from Consumer Reports. It has a low number of complaints listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site.

The trucks are ranked based on predicted reliability scores from Consumer Reports, where drivers list problems they faced with previous models. NHTSA complaints and recalls are also taken into consideration. For example, they lowered the ranking of the 2021 Ram 1500 due to the amount of severity of complaints found on the NHTSA site.

The 2021 Nissan Titan came in second place, the 2021 Ford F-150 came in third, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 landed in fourth place, the GMC Sierra 1500 got fifth place, and the 2021 Ram 1500 was in last place.

What makes the Tundra reliable?

The 2021 Toyota Tundra is in its final year before it gets a total redesign. We can’t see what’s on the way for the 2022 Toyota Tundra. But until then, we know that the Tundra is incredibly reliable.

This isn’t a surprise because the current generation has been in production for seven years. That’s plenty of time to work out all the bugs and problems that may have occurred. The Ram 1500 was redesigned in 2019, so it should be improving by now.

Toyota tends to have an excellent reputation for providing long-lasting, reliable options. But what’s surprising is the fact that the 2021 Tundra has zero complaints listed on NHTSA and Consumer Reports

Issues on older Toyota Tundra models include brake problems for the 2016 and 2017 models, in-car electronic issues for the 2015 model, suspension issues for the 2016 model, and body hardware problems for the 2018 model.

What issues do other trucks face?

While the 2021 Toyota Tundra currently has zero recalls and issues reported, rivals didn’t achieve the same level of reliability. For example, the 2021 Ford F-150 had three recalls with 17 complaints.

The most concerning complaint involve braking failure. The 2020 Ford F-150 has seven recalls and 90 consumer complaints, so even though the 2021 model features a redesign, this truck is improving.

The GMC Sierra 1500 racked up three recalls so far. It shares the same recalls with the Silverado, but they had different problems reported. The biggest issue for the GMC Sierra involves engine fires, but there isn’t an open NHTSA investigation on this matter or a TBS that addresses the concern.

Last but not least, the 2021 Ram 1500 only has one recall for the year. However, it has 30 complaints listed by the NHTSA and 148 TSBs. The biggest and most common complaint involves the engine stalling while in motion.

If you’re looking for a reliable truck, you can currently trust the 2021 Toyota Tundra to last. The 2022 Tundra may have new issues to work out with its updated powertrain options and equipment, but we will keep you updated as we learn more.
