Will Old Parking Garages Collapse Under the Weight of EVs?
This video was first publish on Car Coach Youtube Chanel
The collapse of a parking garage in New York City on Tuesday that killed at least one person has put a new spotlight on aging structures used for vehicle storage. The exact cause of the structure’s failure has not been determined, but updates have been made to it in the years since and it is currently licensed to accommodate 276 vehicles.
The incident occurred after a recent study raised concerns that many older parking garages may need to be re-evaluated due to the increasing average weight of vehicles, particularly electric models.
The report from the British Parking Association noted that some electric cars weigh more than double what popular models in the same segments did in the 1960s, due in part to their heavy battery packs. This also often applies to contemporary cars.
The converted brownstone or building was never meant for a parking garage. The Load rating per square foot was exceeded.
Considering the extra weight of EV's, how will this effect the roads, will the weight shorten the lifespan roads and bridges too.
In this video, we explore the potential risks posed by electric vehicles (EVs) on old parking garages. As EVs grow in popularity, the concern arises as to whether the added weight of these vehicles could cause older structures to collapse. We investigate this issue and share important insights into what actions can be taken to mitigate risks.

Are old parking garages safe to use? That's the question being asked after a series of collapses in Manhattan over the last few months, involving parking garages made from concrete, steel and asphalt.
Could these collapses be the beginning of the end for old parking garages? Or is there another explanation for what's been happening? In this video, we'll explore the possible causes of these garage collapses, and whether or not they're evidence of a larger trend.
