Although only one full-size pickup truck was named a 2021 Consumer Guide ‘Best Buy’ there are three in the compact pickup truck class that earned the title. GM‘s midsize trucks got the honor. In addition, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline made the cut as well. Together, these three midsize or compact pickup trucks are the best compact pickup trucks of 2021 according to Consumer Guide.

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

This is one of the most popular midsize trucks. The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado offers a wide range of options including various choices for the powertrain. In fact, the 2.8-Liter Turbodiesel 4-cylinder offers best-in-class fuel economy and tow up to 7,700 pounds. It’s stylish and capable, earning a ‘Best Buy’ badge and a place on the list of Consumer Guide’s list of the best compact pickup trucks of 2021.

So this midsizer is a great choice for those that want a smaller truck that can still handle relatively big jobs. There’s also a robust off-road trim called the ZR2, which lends itself to the buyers looking for something a little more adventurous. While the 2021 Chevy Colorado doesn’t have good predicted reliability scores from critics like Consumer Reports or J.D. Power, it remains a compelling option with starting prices in the mid $20s.

Anyone who ranks the Chevrolet Colorado well, the 2021 GMC Canyon is also likely to impress. In the Denali trim, this compact pickup truck is one of the most luxurious in the class. It shares powertrain options with the Colorado, as are both GM’s small pickup trucks, and also offers an off-road trim––the AT4.

Like its Chevrolet brethren, the 2021 GMC Canyon didn’t excellent in terms of predicted reliability ratings this year. But a predicted reliability rating isn’t everything. These two midsize trucks are the only two in the segment to offer a diesel powertrain, making them the most desirable to those that don’t want to lose the diesel option just because they are shopping in the smaller truck segment.

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline is without a doubt one of the most decorated trucks of the year. It’s at the top of most compact pickup trucks lists, and just received a stylish redesign. It now offers more rugged and “truckish” appeal, as well as standard all-wheel drive.

If a heavy duty work truck is what you’re searching for, this isn’t the one. However, it is versatile and able enough to handle nearly everything even the most avid weekender can throw at it. Plus, the 2021 Honda Ridgleline offers unrivaled on-road handling, as well as a quiet and comfortable cabin making it the best option for daily driving in the city.

According to Consumer Guide, you can’t go wrong with the 2021 Honda Ridgeline, the 2021 Chevy Colorado, or the 2021 GMC Canyon. GM’s smaller pickup trucks are good looking and offer several configurations. That includes the class-exclusive diesel powertrain.

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline sits on a unibody construction, sharing a platform with the Honda Pilot SUV. That makes this one of the most comfortable pickup trucks you can buy for daily driving. These three trucks are Consumer Guide’s best compact pickup trucks of 2021.

There are many financial aspects of owning a vehicle, and maintenance can be a big part of that. Luckily for us, Consumer Reports has done a survey, asking thousands of members to report on the vehicles they own to give us the most accurate representation of cars from the perspective of the owners. Along the way, they found three vehicles that you can buy on the used car market for under $10,000 with minimal yearly maintenance costs, making them the dream bargain for many buyers.

The Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is far from the most exciting vehicle on the market, but it does boast Nissan’s reliability. It is not only affordable to buy used, they are affordable to buy new, but some buyers may be more apprehensive about purchasing a leaf because the idea of owning and maintaining an electric vehicle can deter some drivers.

According to the survey from Consumer Reports, it costs users…well…nothing to maintain the Nissan Leaf. This isn’t an absurd idea, either, as the Leaf doesn’t require oil changes or other regular maintenance because there is no internal combustion engine. Of course, tires might be needed every year or two, but the overall yearly maintenance for a used Nissan Leaf was reported in at $0 per year.

A Ford Focus

Not surprisingly, the Ford Focus also made the list for used models under $10,000 for 2011. Maintenance costs for the Focus weren’t quite as impressive as the nonexistent number for the Nissan Leaf, but owners reported an average and affordable $200 per year in maintenance to keep the car on the road.

At this point, vehicles are completely out of warranty, and that is where expenses like maintenance and repair costs can stack up quickly for owners. Like the Leaf, the Focus is affordable to purchase and maintain, but it is also a reliable option even at 10 years old.

Another Ford, the Fiesta

Ford has a history of reliability, and perhaps that is what makes it one of the most popular pickup truck options on the market. But, it’s the Ford Fiesta that takes second place to the Ford Focus if you’re looking for a 2011 used vehicle with low maintenance costs. It balances out the Focus, matching it at an average of $200 a year in maintenance costs while still providing drivers with reliability.

While none of these cars are remarkably exciting to drive, lacing enthusiastic acceleration and handling, they are rather responsible vehicles to own. Low purchase prices for these 2011 model years are only enhanced by low running costs, such as fuel, and even lower yearly maintenance costs to keep your car on the road even at 10 years old and with higher mileage.

You’re familiar with the Audi brand. The automaker has been around for more than 100 years, and the company’s vehicles have sold in America for the last 50 years. The company has a simple four-letter name, which is easy to spell, but how easy is it to pronounce? Given Audi’s German origin, you might not be pronouncing the name correctly because it’s not necessarily as straightforward as you might think.

But don’t worry because we’re here to help you learn how to correctly pronounce Audi. You may be surprised by the pronunciation because it’s not what you might expect based on the spelling being close to “audio.”

The history of Audi

Audi.com tells you everything you need to know about the company’s history. The automaker’s lineage dates back to 1899 when August Horch founded his first car company, August Horch & Cie in Cologne, Germany. 10 years later, he had a difference of opinion with the board and formed a new company, which has operated under the name Audiwerk AG, Zwickau since 1910 – which is the birth of the modern company’s name.

In 1932, four German automobile manufacturers merged and become one, Auto Union AG, which is the root of the modern company AUDI AG.

After some obstacles in the middle of the 20th century, Audi was reborn with the Audi 100 model line in the 1960s. The company entered the U.S. market in 1970.

How do you pronounce Audi?

You may be wondering how Horch came up with the name Audi. After he left his original company, he couldn’t use his surname in the name of his new company. The Cambridge Dictionary tells us Horch means “hark!” or “listen!” in German, so Horch translated that into Latin, to come up with the word Audi.

But how is it pronounced? Cars.com explains. Loren Angelo, Audi of America’s vice president of marketing, says because “since Audi is so close to the word ‘audio,’ we often hear our name pronounced, ‘Aw-dee.'” That’s not the correct way to say the name, however.

Angelo continues, “to set the record straight, the official pronunciation is ‘Ow-dee’ similar to ‘howdy’ or ‘outie’ like the belly button!”

So there you have it straight from the source. Next time you say the name Audi, forget that it looks like the word audio; pronouncing it that way is wrong. If you want to get it right, make sure you pronounce the first syllable as “ow,” as if somebody is hurting you.

Audi typically sticks to the naming scheme of a single letter-number combination for many of its models. The A-line usually features the more affordable cars, with the A4 among the more popular cars among the A-line. Audi says the A4 family impresses with its “high-quality look, technical form, and stable sportiness.”

If you’re looking to get into a higher-end model, you’ll probably want to choose a model in the Q family. If that’s where you’re looking, your best bet may be the Q5. The manufacturer says it “combines the sportiness of an Audi Avant with a multifaceted character, a highly versatile interior, and high everyday usability.”

For something more electric, then the automaker’s latest line, the e-tron, may be for you. Audi says the e-tron gives owners “more personal freedom for self-determined mobility.” Bumping it up to the e-Tron Sportback gives you “an electric vehicle that promises pure emotion.” The highest-end e-tron is the GT, which is “a modern-day demonstration of progress” that “radiates sportiness, exclusivity,  and comfort.”

Springing for an e-tron is going to cost you. A luxury brand with its first purely electric vehicle isn’t going to be cheap, with base prices starting north of $60,000.

No matter which model you buy, at least you’ll sound knowledgeable at the dealership with the right pronunciation.

When you think about towing a camper or a trailer, your mind probably envisions a large SUV like a Chevy Tahoe or maybe a truck like a Ford F-150. Those vehicles can definitely get the job done, even if it’s a big job. But what if you only have a small trailer and a compact car? Can a small car tow, too?

Some compact cars can tow more than you think

Compact cars are generally used for transporting up to five people while being fuel-efficient in the process. After all, they’re called “commuter cars” for a reason. Believe it or not, there are many new compact cars currently in the market that can tow up to 2,000 pounds despite their smaller, lightweight statures.

If you currently own a compact car and would like to know if it has a tow rating, then you can check the owner’s manual for one. According to Camper Class, the manual will contain the car’s tow capacity rating and hitch weight. Most small cars are tow rated at 1,000 to 1,500 pounds, however, some of them – like the Kia Soul and the Subaru Impreza – can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

What kind of trailer hitch would a compact car use?

Most compact cars will use a Class 1 trailer hitch, which is suitable for small campers and trailers. Typically, a Class 1 hitch is rated at a 2,000-pound towing capacity and a 200-pound tongue weight. The tongue weight is the weight that a loaded trailer puts on the hitch. It’s important to know since a tongue weight that’s too heavy can reduce traction to the front tires and reduce the car’s steering control. Too little tongue weight can cause the trailer to sway.

Crossroads Trailers reports that a good rule of thumb is to keep the weight under 80% of the car’s maximum tow capacity. While you’re searching in your car’s owner’s manual for a tow rating, be sure to look up your car’s “gross vehicle weight,” which is the actual weight of the car. Next, you can look for the car’s “Gross Vehicle Weight Rating,” which is the sum of the car’s weight plus the maximum weight that it can safely carry.

When shopping for a trailer, look for the “gross trailer weight,” which what the trailer will weigh when fully loaded. After gathering up all of these numbers, you can then calculate whether or not your car can tow the type of trailer that you need.

What if my car can’t tow the trailer I need?

If you find that your car can’t tow what you need, or if your car is not recommended for towing at all, then you’ll have to rent, borrow, or buy a truck or SUV. Simply put, there’s no other way around it considering you can’t cheat the laws of physics with a compact car.

If you do the calculations and find that your car might be at the limit when it comes to towing, then we suggest finding a larger vehicle for towing as well. Considering that a lot can go wrong when towing a large amount of weight with a small, it’s simply not worth the risk in some cases.
