General Motors is exploring new frontiers…on the moon. In an announcement on May 26, 2021, GM said that they’ll be teaming up with Lockheed Martin to develop a moon buggy for NASA. GM and Lockheed Martin worked together to develop a conceptual Lunar Terrain Vehicle in an answer to a request for information (RFI) by NASA last year. This isn’t the first time that GM is sending a lunar rover to the moon; they’ve designed rovers that made it to the moon on three Apollo missions.

The NASA moon buggy will make it safer for Artemis astronauts to move around the surface of the moon. It will also be easier to transport scientific equipment.

In a statement, Lockheed Martin Space executive vice president said, “These next-generation rovers will dramatically extend the range of astronauts as they perform high-priority science investigation on the Moon that will ultimately impact humanity’s understanding of our place in the solar system.”

NASA has wanted to develop moon rovers for some time, and put out a RFI in early 2020. The RFI stated that NASA was interested in ideas which would allow them to explore more of the lunar surface using robots. NASA specifically wanted ideas that included autonomous driving, electric vehicle systems and the ability to traverse rough terrain.

Why did NASA choose GM to send a lunar rover to the moon?

Steve Clarke, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for exploration, said, “We also want to hear from industry leaders in all-terrain vehicles, electric vehicles, and more—this is not exclusive to the space industry,” notes Smith. “We want our rovers on the Moon to draw on, and spur, innovations in electric vehicle energy storage and management, autonomous driving, and extreme environment resistance.”

Currently NASA expects their astronauts to be able to walk up to a half mile in their spacesuits,. GM’s rover would allow astronauts to explore more of the moon. NASA wants to explore the lunar South Pole, which has never been visited by humans before.

This isn’t GM’s first space venture

In fact, GM has been to the moon before. GM worked with Boeing to develop the rover that the Apollo 15 astronauts drove on the moon in 1971. The GM lunar rover also went on two other moon missions, which basically makes them old pros in the space travel realm.

The Apollo rover traveled less than five miles on the surface of the moon. The Artemis rover is sure to tack on many more miles than that.

The obstacles facing the Artemis moon buggy will be different than those facing the Apollo rover. The sites that the Artemis moon buggy will traverse will be darker and colder.

The GM-Lockheed Martin partnership will look toward the future

Lockheed Martin says that the moon buggy they develop with GM won’t just suit NASA’s current needs, but anticipate what NASA will need as well. This look to the future is in line with GM’s recent announcement that they will be moving toward all electric vehicles by 2035.

So what does GM and Lockheed Martin’s moon buggy look like?

Right now there are no definitive designs drawn up. GM says they’re waiting for more information from NASA. They expect that there will be multiple designs, and possibly multiple rovers, too.

Once you determine that a compact tractor is the right piece of equipment for the jobs on your specific spot of land, then the research commences. There are several tractor brands to choose from. Plus, there are so many different categories. We’ve cross-referenced some different sources and came up with this list of 5 of the best compact tractors on the market.

What is a compact tractor?

First of all, what is a compact tractor? CompactEquipment.com defines the compact tractor as an agricultural tractor that is smaller than a typical farming tractor. Compact tractor models are compatible with first-category implements, as they use a 540-rpm power take off attachment system (PTO) combined with a three-point hitch. A compact tractor usually weighs less than 4,000 pounds (although some are a little larger).

“Today’s compact tractors are defined as small agricultural tractors equipped with a 540-rpm PTO and a three-point hitch designed for Category 1 implements. Compact tractors generally have a mass less than 4,000 lbs and use less than 40 PTO hp to run their attachments.”

Great Day Outdoors calls the compact tractor the “Swiss army knife” of the tractor world. Even within the compact tractor segment, there are several different styles and sizes. They are perfect for anyone who needs the absolute utility and versatility of a tractor, but isn’t necessarily plowing 200 acres of cornfields each season.

John Deere, New Holland, and Kubota are today’s leading ( though not only) producers in the small tractor category. These tractors are built with relatively smaller footprints than their behemoth counterparts. However, they all have a wide range of implements that they can make use of. Here are 3 of the best.

A farmer favorite, the Boomer 55 Cab is a 55 hp compact tractor. the 3-cylinder engine has a 12.4-gallon fuel tank. According to Tractor.com, this New Holland compact tractor uses an independent electro-hydraulic PTO that lends 46.7 hp to the job.

But the T4B offers other transmission options as well. These include a 16×16 gear option and the three-range dual-pedal hydrostatic transmission. New Holland shows a price of $43,021 for the Boomer 55 Cab compact tractor.

The New Holland T4B has a maximum ball end lift capacity of 2,756 pounds. It’s one of the larger compact tractors with a height of 94 inches and a 128.1″x69.1″ footprint. This is one of the best compact tractors around and weighs in at 4,194 pounds.

John Deere 4066M Heavy Duty

Although the John Deere 3025E is a great tractor for first-time tractor buyers, the John Deere 4066M Heavy Duty takes it up a notch. This is a compact tractor for a heavy-duty work environment. The John Deere 4066M HD is one of the best compact tractors on the market and it has a turbocharged diesel engine.

Combine that with an eHydrostatic transmission and both mid and rear hydraulics and you’ve got yourself a bonafide land tamer. This beast of a compact tractor has 65.9 hp, with PTO horsepower at 52. It’s price at $51,842 and John Deere actually has it on sale right now.

The John Deere 4066M Heavy Duty offers options for three-point, Category 1, and Category 2 hitching options with a lift capacity of 2,500 pounds. This model has nice creature comforts like standard cruise control and optional wraparound halogen headlights as well as fender-mounted light for nighttime jobs.

Kubota L2501

Don’t let its size deceive you. The Kubota L2501 is agile and perfect for general use––it’s one of the best smaller tractors in the industry. It’s not as powerful on paper as the others on this list, but that doesn’t hold the Kubota L2501 back.

This model has a 24.8 hp engine with PTO horsepower at 20.5. It’s a lighter unit, weighing 2,425 pounds. The 3-cylinder engine has a 10-gallon fuel tank. The three-point hitching system offers a 1,918 pound lift capacity at the ball point.

It offers both two- and four-wheel drive options. The Kubota L2501 uses a gear shift transmission that allows the operator eight forward speeds and four in reverse. There’s also a hydrostatic transmission model with three-range speed. The Kubota L2501 starts as low as $17,600 although implements and options can ring up the price quickly.

Finding a good tractor for your work environment

Overall, if you are looking for a great tractor that isn’t a massive behemoth with its own zip code, a compact tractor is your best best. These aren’t the only good compact tractors out there. Other brands like Massey and Case IH make nice ones, too.

However, these three are among the best compact tractors on the market. That said, finding a good tractor depends largely on your working environment as well as the jobs it will need to get done.

The Lexus IS has been refreshed for the 2021 model year and among its revisions is a new look and new tech. But are these features worthy enough to stand up to another entry-level luxury sedan like the Infiniti Q50? Let’s see how these two sedans stack up.

The 2021 Lexus IS sedan still exudes luxury

If you like the Lexus IS when it was redesigned back in 2014, then you’ll love it now. Take a glance at the 2021 IS and you’ll notice that it’s really only slightly different than the previous model. That’s because Lexus kept a lot of the same body lines and curvatures of the last IS sedan and reshaped the front and rear fascias.

Ultimately, the 2021 Lexus IS features more aggressive headlights and upward-sloping taillights complete with a light bar that goes across the trunk. On the inside, the Lexus IS remains largely the same, as all of the buttons on the center console, the steering wheel, and even the seats remain the same. However, a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is now available. Previously, you had to solely rely on the clunky touchpad on the center console (which still exists), but now you can toggle through menus easier with the touch of a finger.

Under the hood, the Lexus IS can be outfitted with a  241-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine (IS300) or a 311-hp, 3.5-liter V6 (IS350). And if you want to make your IS350 look a little sportier, you can opt for the F Sport package that includes dark 19-inch wheels, an updated exhaust, mesh front grille, and an optional red leather interior. There is also the option for a Dynamic Handling package with adaptive dampers.

The 2021 Infiniti Q50 is a formidable rival

Infiniti has always been known for producing luxuriously powerful cars and the Q50 is no exception. Not much has changed for the 2021 model year save for a new “Sensory” trim level that features 19-inch wheels, leather seats, a 16-speaker Bose sound system, and open-pore wood trim. The mid-level Luxe trim now comes standard with a host of driver-assist features and the Signature Edition adds a sense of richness with its saddle-brown interior and dark-chrome exterior trim.

One of the Q50’s highlights is that it comes standard with a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 300 hp and is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission. According to Car and Driver’s testing, this combination is good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, as compared to the Lexus IS’ 5.6-second time. So it’s safe to say that the Infiniti Q50 is the quicker car.

However, performance doesn’t make the Q50 a clear winner as Car and Driver pointed out that its ride was “jittery” and “sometimes harsh,” which is not too indicative of a premium luxury sedan. They also stated that the car’s steering was light, but not too responsive. By the sound of it, the Q50 is great for acceleration, and we’re sure it feels nice on the inside, but the Lexus IS is still provides more of an all-around luxurious aura in our eyes.

If you want luxury, then choose the Lexus

That all being said, if you care about performance a little more than luxurious opulence, then choose the Infiniti Q50. However, if you think you would enjoy a plush ride, a comfortable and classier interior, and a good amount of power, then choose the Lexus IS. Fortunately, both cars are priced in the $40,000 to $55,000 range depending on the trim level you choose.

Recent editions of the Mitsubishi Outlander had their fair share of issues, but the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a step in the right direction. The vehicle serves as a good entryway for those interested in an electric car. Its feature set is solid if a little outdated in some areas, and its price is in line with similar cars. The electric car market is only growing with time, and the other available options are worth considering, including one from Mitsubishi itself.

Mitsubishi has struggled to make the Outlander a serviceable product for a few years

The Mitsubishi Outlander has not always been associated with quality since entering the market in 2017. Just last year, over 177,000 vehicles were recalled by the company due to issues surrounding faulty seatbelts (customers complained about this problem for years before it was finally fixed). The models involved in the recall were the 2014 through 2019 versions of the Outlander and the 2018 through 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

The car was not popular or highly regarded enough to shrug off this situation as a speed bump. The 2020 Outlander saw some improvements, but Mitsubishi had to make significant upgrades to get the line back on track and make it more appealing.

The 2021 version is unspectacular but dependable

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV includes a number of new features and upgrades to bring the vehicle up to par with competing SUVs. The electric-only range increases from 22 miles to 24 miles, and an additional 31 hp is also added. In most instances, the SUV is powered by its two electric motors, and the four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine tends to power the generator.

The extended electric range comes courtesy of a battery pack that has 13.8 kWh, a step up from the 12 kWh that was in previous versions. The Outlander PHEV is generally limited to 174 hp, but when driving at higher speeds the engine will directly power the front wheels and increase the output to 221 hp.

The Outlander PHEV can be driven in Eco, Save, Charge, Normal, and Sport modes that give the driver more options to deal with the amount of fuel in the tank, the status of the battery, or if you’re driving through a fuel-only or electric-only location.

When you do need to charge the battery, it’s good to know that the Outlander is one of the few PHEVs that is capable of using quick chargers. It can go from empty to 80 percent charged by a Level 3 CHAdeMO fast charger in as little as 25 minutes. A 240-volt Level 2 charger will take four hours to fully replenish the battery pack, and a standard 120-volt household plug will take nine or 14 hours depending on if you have a 12 or eight-amp circuit. This is a major leg up compared to other competitors that take longer to recharge the battery back to full.

On the downside, the Outlander PHEV’s interior is dated, full of cheap plastic and clunky technology that has been surpassed in other vehicles. The SUV also doesn’t drive smoothly on bumpier roads, and it rolls through turns more than you would like. But overall, the Outlander is a decent enough SUV.

The base Outlander PHEV starts at $37,490 and the newly added mid-grade LE at $39,190, while range-topping GTs like the one we tested command $43,805, according to MotorTrend

The 2022 model has even more impressive updates

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues the upward trajectory for Mitsubishi’s SUV. Next year’s edition of the vehicle has received some early praise from Consumer Reports. Due to the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Alliance, the car has a lot in common with the 2021 Nissan Rogue, and the new Outlander uses that shared information for the better. It adds a third, admittedly smaller row, a more aesthetically pleasing cabin, and improves on the handling agility.

Mitsubishi has come a long way to make the Outlander a car worth taking out on the open road.
