The practical on-the-road driving test is the last hurdle before obtaining a driver’s license. The purpose of this test is to determine whether you can drive confidently while observing car safety. It’s essential to prepare for the test just as you would with other exams. Here’s a look at what a driver’s license test entails and common mistakes to avoid

What to expect during a driver’s license test

Before obtaining a driver’s license, you’ll be expected to drive a vehicle while an examiner evaluates your ability to control the vehicle in different driving situations. Thus, you should prepare to get tested on various driving skills.

These include navigating corners, parallel parking, backing up, driving through intersections, three-point turns, entering and exiting highways, and changing lanes. While demonstrating these skills to the examiner, he/she will also observe if you’re handling the vehicle safely and lawfully.

The driving portion of the test also entails testing your eyesight. For instance, the examiner may require you to read the registration number of a vehicle parked 20 meters ahead of you. If you can’t do that, you’ll certainly fail the driver’s test.

Common driving test mistakes that may make you fail

According to the DMV, there are so many mistakes you can make when you get behind the wheel during a road test. Even so, it’s best to remember that since you’re not a qualified driver, the examiner doesn’t expect you to be perfect. Moreover, you can retake the test if you fail the first time out. That said, here are some common driving mistakes that could make you fail a driver’s test, according to Aceable

Whether you’re the driver or passenger, the rule of thumb is to fasten your seatbelt after entering a vehicle. Unfortunately, some students fail to buckle up during their driver’s test, which could be attributed to anxiety, fear, or nervousness. You’ll automatically fail a driver’s license if you forget to buckle up.

During a driver’s license test, you’ll undoubtedly want to impress the examiner. Some students go to the extent of keeping their eyes on the road ahead while forgetting to check the rear-view and side mirrors regularly. These mirrors are there to ensure you drive safely, and failure to use them could make you fail the examination.

At stop signs, you need to bring a vehicle to a complete halt. Making an incomplete stop at stop signs is a traffic offense that could attract fines of up to $500. During your test, it’s best to observe stop signs and red lights. Failure to do so means you’ll automatically fail the test. In this regard, always keep your foot on the brake pedal for a few moments until the vehicle stops completely.

Driving unnecessarily fast is among the mistakes that many road test students fall victim to. It’s a no-brainer that overspeeding is a major cause of fatal crashes. Often, student drivers don’t surpass speed limits due to recklessness, but instead, out of nervousness and anxiety. Driving over the stipulated speed limit will automatically result in a fail during your examination.

During a driving test, you should anticipate pedestrians because they have the right of way. Failing to yield to pedestrians or paying attention to crosswalks when turning increases the possibility of failing a driving test.

What you can take away from this

Although a driving test takes an average of 30-40 minutes, it’s the most essential step before obtaining your driver’s license. Preparing for the test also entails knowing the common mistakes that could make you fail. So, if you’re preparing to get out there for your own test, now you’re a bit more prepared than before!

While the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team is used to dominating on the track, this week was a bit different. The ever-present Mercedes cars not only missed out on the podium, but one of the vehicles didn’t even finish the race. This is an unusual scenario for two cars that are generally running at 110% every race. What happened with the pair of W12 vehicles this weekend?

A bad day for the Mercedes Formula 1 team

Both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton drive for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. While the cars are known as the fastest on the track, this Monaco Grand Prix did not go quite as well. According to Formula 1, this was the first time since 2017 that there was not a win for Mercedes.

So what exactly happened? When Bottas made a pit stop, the crew was unable to remove the front-right tire. Apparently, it was stuck to the axel and could not be removed. By the time the crew figured out the issue, it was impossible to fix. The car was otherwise in good shape but had to be retired.

While Charles Leclerc came in first during qualifying in his Ferrari, it could not start for the race. After crashing his car, there was an issue with the driveshaft. There was also an issue with the gearbox. Due to this, his first-place start did not happen. In turn, Hamilton moved up a spot and started in sixth place.

It is rare that Hamilton ever starts beyond the first, second, or third positions. Toto Wolff said that the team lacked pace all weekend. The speedy cars were unusually slow, even with Hamilton behind the wheel. The pressure was on by having a slow start for qualifying and losing Bottas early into the race. To be fair, Bottas sat in third place before the rogue tire cost him the race.

“Yes, I’d rather have taken third and seventh than only seventh but you have to take it on the chin. Today we lost a couple of points, a few points. This is a long championship, it’s going to swing either way and at the end we’ll see in Abu Dhabi who’s going to have their nose ahead – and that’s it.”

When the team decided to bring Hamilton in early on lap 29 to get ahead of Pierre Gasly, that also did not work. Even though the AlphaTauri car is not the fastest, it managed to stay ahead of Hamilton in the Mercedes. Additionally, Hamilton ended up being Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin and Sergio Perez in the Red Bull Racing car.

Max Verstappen stayed at the top of the field for most of the race in his Red Bull Racing car. He managed to keep his lead and stay in the first place to win the Monaco Grand Prix.

Where do the teams stand for the championship?

Right now, Mercedes is behind Red Bull Racing in the Constructor Championship rankings. Verstappen currently has 105 points to Hamilton’s 101. The Red Bull team has 149 points overall while Mercedes has 148 points.

Mercedes will fix Bottas’ car quickly before the next race in Abu Dhabi. Although Hamilton’s car was fine, it just wasn’t fast enough to keep up. The team will do behind-the-scenes work on the car, and the team will undoubtedly focus on strategy for the next race.

Even with the fastest car on the track, the Mercedes vehicles failed to deliver in Monaco.

Mercedes has recalled more than 12,300 Mercedes-Benz models due to a faulty front seat position switch. A faulty electrical contact within the switch might prevent driver and passenger seat belt force limiters and airbags from activating correctly during an accident. Mercedes-Benz began an investigation in 2020 based on a report from a supplier about seat and airbag problems.

Doubling up with customer complaints, the auto manufacturer saw it important to recall the Mercedes-Benz models affected. According to Consumer Reports, the faulty models don’t comply with the requirements of the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) no. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” according to the NHTSA.

If the seat belt doesn’t fully retract due to the faulty switch, the occupant might find it hard and an inconvenience to wear it, which increases the risk of injury in the event of a car crash.

The faulty front seat switches

As noted by Car Complaints, the seat position switch signal does not function properly or is totally missing. This prevents the airbag limiter and the seat retraction and activation system from functioning as per the manufacturer’s specifications.

According to Cars.com, the models affected include the 2021 E350, E450, E450 Wagon, and E63S AMG. The well-acclaimed auto manufacturer is also recalling the 2020 E63S AMG Wagon and the 2020-2021 E53 AMG models. In these models, the passenger seat limiter is positioned too close to the airbag. This may prevent the airbag from activating correctly.

Mercedes-Benz is also recalling some 2021 C-Class, GLC, CLS, Convertible, and G-Class vehicles. Customers who want to know whether their vehicles are affected can check the Mercedes-Benz USA. In these models, a faulty electrical component within the seat position switch can disrupt the normal deployment of driver and passenger airbags during a crash.

This won’t be the first time that Mercedes-Benz recalls some of its models. In the most recent recall, some Benz models a potential communication software failure. The software design might fail to communicate the vehicle’s correct location for the eCall system during a crash. This might result in the first aid responders going to the wrong location, increasing the risk of further injury after a crash.

As Car Complaints puts it, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models were recalled due to a cluster issue. Some of the cars couldn’t adjust the multifunctional display in the instrument cluster. The vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS number 101, “Control and Displays,” and the display might appear too bright, hindering the driver’s vision and increasing the risk of crashing.

Moreover, the 2019-2020 Mercedes Benz and Freightliner Sprinters were recalled due to a fuel line problem. The fuel line clamps could loosen, leading to a fuel leak that can increase fire risk.

The latest recall for Mercedes-Benz

In December 2020, a supplier filed a report concerning the possible production problems. The supplier that a batch of seat position switches might have problems with the solder. Mercedes-Benz launched investigations to look into the matter.

In some cars, the seat position switch signal was missing or incorrect, resulting in the seat belt force limiter and airbags fail to activate when needed. The recall is set to begin on May 31, 2021. Owners of these models are to return the cars to the dealership to replace the seat position switches.

What owners can do

Mercedes-Benz will notify owners and dealers of the problem and replace the seat position switches for free. If you think your car might have that problem, you can contact Mercedes customer service for more information or check if your car has a recall on MBUSA. You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline or visit SafeCar.gov

The 2022 Kia Seltos is coming back in black, according to Motor1. The new Kia Seltos Nightfall Edition will begin at about $27,865, and this price includes the $1,175 destination fee. You can expect primarily visual upgrades with this model.

But unfortunately, there are no photos of the Nightfall Edition yet. The information about this trim level is detailed in the 2022 ordering guide. You can expect to see 18-inch matte black wheels, a black radiator grille, black roof rails, and black side sills. It’s safe to expect a blackened interior as well.

The NightFall Edition will serve as the cheapest trim option available with the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder variant with 146 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque.

Say goodbye to the turbocharged Kia Seltos S trim. It’s being discontinued. However, the Nightfall Edition will offer similar features and standard equipment. It will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Also, the 2022 Kia Seltos is receiving new badging with the updated Kia logo. But telling the trim levels apart will be difficult because Kia is removing the trim badging from the vehicle’s rear.

Other than that, the Kia Seltos will be pretty much the same. It just came out for 2021, so it doesn’t need a refresh yet. But on a positive note, safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist will be standard.

Is the 2021 Kia Seltos a good crossover?

Yes, the 2021 Kia Seltos is an excellent crossover option to consider. You don’t have to wait for the 2022 model to enjoy this fun and sporty ride. You can get started in a new Kia Seltos for about $21,990.

The Kia Seltos gets an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in the city and up to 34 mpg on the highway. According to Edmunds, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.1 seconds, which is great for its class.

Edmunds recommends upgrading to the options 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. You can also opt for a wireless charging pad, 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster, and a head-up display.

The Kia Seltos provides a smooth ride with firm handling. A little wind noise may enter the cabin at highway speeds, and the climate control system could be a little stronger. But the seats are comfortable in the front and rear for tall adults.

Surprisingly, this tiny crossover is excellent on space. It provides up to 62.8 cubic feet of cargo space with 26.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. There are plenty of storage bins, cup holders, and trays for your stuff.

The 2022 Kia Seltos may sport a slightly updated look, but you can have a great time in the Seltos right now. We can’t wait to see what the new Kia Seltos Nightfall Edition looks like, though.
