Sometimes, the best way to really gauge the popularity of a pickup is to review the sales data and metrics. So, when you see all the rage about the Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline, it’s the sales data that you simply must see. While critics point to pros and cons, the proof is in the monthly and yearly sales numbers. And the Toyota Tacoma dominates the Honda Ridgeline when it comes to data. If you’re considering a midsize pickup, it may help to know that far more Tacoma trucks go home with new owners than Ridgeline models do.

How the Toyota Tacoma performs in sales

To really see how popular the Toyota Tacoma is and has been over the years, look at the GoodCarBadCar data. The Tacoma’s sales figures continue to increase year after year. In 2015, more than 179,000 of these trucks went home with new owners. One year later, that total was over 191,000 sold. And by 2018, 245,659 Tacoma pickups sold.

The trajectory appears to continue to point upward. And despite the pandemic conditions of last year, shuttering dealerships, and stalling production, Toyota still managed to sell 238,805 Tacoma pickups. Based on current sales through April this year, the Tacoma already clocked 90,897 sales.

To make the comparison as apples-to-apples as possible, GoodCarBadCar shares the same metrics of monthly and annual sales for the Honda Ridgeline. And the sales data shows only 23,668 Ridgeline models sold in 2016, with jumps to roughly 34,000 in 2017 and 30,000 in 2018.

However, based on metrics through April of this year, the Honda Ridgeline does already have 17,177 sales on the books, which is strong for the Honda pickup. Based on past performance, consumers can expect much of the same trajectory for the remainder of 2021.

What’s so great about these two pickups

Both of these pickups have strengths and weaknesses. But for many consumers, the Toyota Tacoma earns serious points for its rugged capability. Its V6 engine can be married to a six-speed, manual transmission, a feature Edmunds says is pretty significant. And new for 2021, Toyota introduces the Trail and Nightshade special editions, while the TRD Sport and Off-Road trims get audio upgrades.

The Honda Ridgeline, on the other hand, feels massive for this smaller truck class. It offers quick driving dynamics and segment-leading innovative amenities, according to Car and Driver. It’s not a typical midsize truck, and consumers love it for those differentiating features.

Is the Honda Ridgeline or the Toyota Tacoma better for you?

When you’re ready to buy a midsize pickup, keep both of these contenders in mind. The Toyota Tacoma clearly does well in sales for a reason. It’s popular for the working truck owner and off-road adventurer.

Alternatively, the Honda Ridgeline is the refined answer to the pickup capability. It’s a practical addition to the vehicle family if hauling people and comfort touchpoints matter. The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is cheaper, with an MSRP range of $26,400 to $36,595. The 2021 Honda Ridgeline runs upwards of $37,665, demonstrating that you’ll pay for those plushier extras.

Decide what you need your new truck to do most and let that guide your purchasing decision. And you can consider the sales metrics since they point to just how many consumers already have made their decisions. The Toyota Tacoma dominates the Honda Ridgeline in units sold. But only you can decide which of these two popular trucks deserves a parking spot in your garage.

When you want high-quality materials and performance satisfaction, the luxury midsize SUV segment delivers. The luxury SUV space is crowded with top-notch contenders, too. And one particular SUV earning heaps of praise this year is the 2021 BMW X5. The 2021 BMW X5 is getting attention from even the Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and Cadillac fans alike.

And out of all the luxury brands with offerings in this space, some say the 2021 BMW X5 is unmatched. In fact, one critical review list suggests it comes in second only to one other luxury midsize SUV.

The best luxury SUVs you can buy this year

MotorTrend teams inspect and experience each vehicle extensively, including the rigorous driving tests. This year’s best luxury SUVs earn their ranks based on performance, luxury, and value.

A few of the top contenders on this list of nine include the 2021 Genesis GV80, the 2021 Porsche Cayenne, and the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar. And coming in at No. 2, outranking each of the aforementioned challengers, is the mighty yet elegant 2021 BMW X5.

Where the 2021 BMW X5 overachieves

The BMW X5 has been in production and on the stage since 1999. Over the years, the popular midsize SUV managed to maintain its midrange ranking too. But MotorTrend says the 2021 model appears to have gotten everything right, and it may just be the best X5 yet. The team compliments the SUV’s responsive and sharp handling. They say the transmission feels “fine-tuned” for smooth acceleration, as well.

The satisfying hum of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 also earns praise, harnessing up to 617 hp. But the other engine option isn’t too shabby either, with its 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6, capable of 335 hp. Finding your best version is easy, as well, with your choice of four trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e, and the X5 M50i. The base price range of $60,945 to $115,095, meaning you can get as much or as little of the X5 that your budget allows.

A few setbacks to consider before you buy

Not every vehicle can be perfect, even in the luxury categories. And while the 2021 BMW X5 ranks well, there are a few cons to weigh. MotorTrend calls some of the active safety tech overeager. The team wasn’t all too inspired about the exterior design either.

Another common criticism is that it can be a snug fit for people and things beyond the first row. And Edmunds says the wide roof pillars cause blind spots. Edmunds also cites the wide door sills make getting in and out of this SUV a tad cumbersome.

The BMW X5 is a top-two contender

The verdict on the 2021 BMW X5 is clear. It may not be as road-chomping as the Porsche Cayenne or as big as the Genesis GV80, but it certainly offers a perfect blend of luxury and driving dynamics. At least that’s what Car and Driver says about the X5. Only the MotorTrend SUV of the Year, the 2021 Land Rover Defender, ranks better. If practicality and performance satisfaction matter to you, the BMW X5 is worth a drive.

The 2021 BMW X5 can get pricey quickly, depending on the trim level and specs you select. But if luxury midsize SUVs are your preference, you likely won’t mind the associated MSRP. What these reviews suggest is that the X5 will deliver wherever you need it to, including luxury and performance. And for this year, it’s a better option than every other model except one.

With the addition of Super Cruise, the GMC Sierra is about to get some upgrades! Finally, clues are starting to emerge about the 2022 GMC Sierra’s new interior, and they’ve only whetted our appetite. See what to expect with the new Sierra.

The 2022 GMC Sierra sports a brand-new interior

The fourth-generation GMC Sierra 1500 emerged in 2019, so this truck doesn’t exactly feel old or outdated. However, we suppose it’s a good time for a refresh, and according to Autoblog, the 2022 GMC Sierra is getting a little more than expected.

Spy photos reveal a new windscreen infotainment system built into the dash above new thin air vents. There are still large buttons and knobs placed around the screen, so you can probably use the system as a touchscreen or use the dials.

It looks like Google Android Automotive is running in the photos, so it’s safe to expect it to come standard along with Apple CarPlay. Including Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would really provide a luxury feel.

The climate control provides a simple and intuitive layout. The buttons and knobs feature a glossy black color with chrome accents. They have angled surfaces, and even the push-button start is wrapped in chrome.

The 2022 GMC Sierra Denali could have an entirely redesigned interior. One significant change includes the introduction of a new gear level that’s replacing the familiar column-mounted shifter. It also looks like it’s wrapped in leather, glossy plastic, and chrome.

It’s difficult to determine if the spy shots are of the Denali trim or lower model options. But it certainly provides an elegant and luxurious feel. Also, the new updates could be exclusive to the Denali trim.

The new digital cluster display is an option we would like to see available on more models. It replaces the GMC Sierra’s current gauges with vibrant pops of colors and could be necessary for the General Motors Super Cruise system.

The GMC Sierra refresh will also include revisions to the front end. We may see a new headlight design with a revised front bumper. New tail lamps and an updated rear bumper are expected as well.

What is GM Super Cruise?

General Motors Super Cruise system is a new feature that is optional for the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali. It’s a semi-autonomous driver assistance feature that allows you to take your hands off the wheel for extended periods on the highway.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be the first vehicle to adopt this new tech, but the 2022 Sierra models will quickly follow suit. It’s also available with the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. So far, the system can be operated on over 200,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada.

It allows drivers to remain hands-free while towing a trailer, and you can engage in an automatic lane change by using the turn signal stalk. Infrared lights will be used to ensure that drivers are paying attention at all times.

More often than not, sports cars with any level of panache can come with significantly hefty price tags. But if budget-friendly performance is what you crave, you’re in luck. There’s an industry critic list of the cheapest and best sports cars you can buy right now. At the top of that list sits the small but fierce 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Some of the best sports cars you can buy for less than $40,000

MotorTrend recently released its ranking of the best sports cars you can buy today for less than $40,000. And a few of these sporty rides might not surprise you, like the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI with its estimated MSRP of $31,000. The 2021 Subaru WRX also made the cut of performance-meets-thrifty with its MSRP of $28,420.

But not even the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N, with a $33,255 price tag, could undercut the super-budget 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Drive home a Miata today for only $27,825 if you want. It’s hands-down the cheapest sports car you can buy.

MotorTrend says you can’t go wrong with a Mazda MX-5 Miata. This small, rear-wheel-drive roadster of fun channels 181 hp produced by the 2.0-liter I-4. It’s a lightweight vehicle, so with this engine, the Miata can still scoot from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 5.7-seconds.

It has all the stylish looks and performance feels of a personality-packed sports scar. And even juicing up the trim level extras with the Brembo/BBS Recaro package will only set you back $35,777 or so.

The pricier contenders on this list

Any sports scar under $40,000 is probably worth a look. And a few of the other favorites besides the Mazda MX-5 Miata on this best-of list include the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 costing $37,895, and the 2021 Honda Civic Type R starting at $38,890.

The most expensive performance rides are still affordable, like the 2021 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance package with the EcoBoost Handling package for $39,085. And believe it or not, this year, you can even drive home a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus for $39,690.

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you’re not into having a manual transmission or small cars. But for many consumers, it’s the perfect combination of practical, sporty, affordable, and fun. Enjoy three trim levels of extras, the Sport, the Club, and the Grand Touring.

The Club offers a nine-speaker Bose audio system, and the Grand Touring adds must-haves like navigation, as CarsDirect.com confirms. Choose the soft-top convertible or the Retractable Fastback as well.

The pitfalls you might not like with the Mazda MX-5 Miata

Car and Driver points out the highs and the lows of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Some of the characteristics that you might not appreciate, include a choppier-feeling ride when compared to others in the segment. You’ll also have far less space for your favorite things and people. And some critics weren’t impressed with the cabin and road noise levels.

In the end, if a playful, sunny day cruiser for under $40,000 is what you need this summer, check out the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Sure, you might have to make a few concessions and compromises. But you’ll likely make up for it in cost savings and value. The brand of the “vroom-vroom” vehicle dominates yet another best-of list. And the MX-5 Miata is at least worth a test drive.
