Studies have shown many external factors can make driving more hazardous. Wearing the wrong shoes can put you at risk for accidents, and some highways can raise your stress levels. Police could also ticket you if your car is a certain color. But does paint color really affect a car’s safety?

Indeed, a recent Monash study shows that any car painted black is statistically more dangerous than others. Black is still one of the most popular shades, especially for sports cars. Where do other colors stand in terms of safety?

The most dangerous car colors

A black car is 12 percent likelier to get into an accident than cars of other colors. You might think this is because black cars are more difficult to see at night. However, the study concludes that a car’s color is even less distinguishable after dark, especially with headlights illuminated.

Gray and silver cars also had increased chances of being involved in collisions, along with blue and red. All of these colors don’t contrast well enough with the road and general outdoor environment. For example, it’s easier for a gray car to conceal itself in foggy weather, making it invisible in dimly lit conditions.

Kelley Blue Book also recommends avoiding some paint colors because they’re more difficult to keep clean. Dirt splashes tend to stand out on black, blue, and white cars, though white can conceal swirl marks. Gray and silver are the most low-maintenance colors, along with brighter shades like orange and green.

Your car’s paint color also might make it likelier to get stolen. Orange Corvette C8 Stingrays are considered more valuable because that was the year the color debuted. KBB also points out that less popular shades, like greens and browns, lower a vehicle’s resale value.

The Monash study dictates that white cars are the safest to drive, followed by cream, beige and yellow shades. White was determined to have the most contrast to its surroundings, but yellow was also high on the list. This could be why it’s the color that adorns attention-grabbing taxis in crowded cities.

Like white cars, stains are also more visible on a yellow backdrop, especially mud splashes. Shades of gold and copper struggle to hide imperfections because of their shinier finishes. A car painted in beige or brown is probably the best choice in terms of balancing safety and cleanliness.

KBB reports that white is the most popular color in every segment except sports cars and coupes, whose buyers prefer black. It still took second place in every class except trucks, where it came in third place. Silver and gray are also popular, with brighter shades in the middle and earthier tones at the bottom.

Dark seltzer, a deeper shade of gray, is predicted to receive high demand this year. Blue and red cars are also expected to rise in popularity, especially with endorsements from influential people like Elon Musk.

Does color really matter?

As Reader’s Digest affirms, 12 percent is only a small margin and shouldn’t heavily influence your decision when selecting your vehicle’s paint color. Even a white car can get into an accident if the roads are hazardous, especially in the middle of a snowstorm. This is especially true if the driver is making aggressive or illegal maneuvers.

Other factors to consider include a vehicle’s crash test scores and general reliability. Abundant safety features can’t prevent accidents 100 percent of the time, but they make such events less likely.

For the first time, a 2021 Ford F-150 has been seen publicly testing self-driving hardware. Ford has been actively involved in autonomous vehicle testing for years. Could the brand be vying for a place in the self-driving commercial space? Setting one of America’s best-selling pickups on the path to full autonomy opens up many exciting possibilities.

The first self-driving F-150 is in the works

A 2021 Ford F-150 was recently seen test driving while fitted with a roof-top self-driving rig. The hardware resembled Argo AI’s self-driving system. It’s unclear if the rig was affiliated with Argo AI or if it’s part of an initiative of Ford’s.

Both the 2021 F-150 and Mustang Mach E will feature a new hands-free driving feature called BlueCruise. BlueCruise is a lower-level self-driving system. It allows drivers to remove their hands from the wheel during safe highway driving conditions. These are known as blue zones. Could Ford be testing out an advanced version of the BlueCruise system that would require this hardware? Details are light for now, but as Ford continues to push forward into the autonomous space, more will come to light.

In 2017 Ford partnered with self-driving technology startup Argo AI to integrate some Ford Focus and Ford Explorer models with their self-driving systems. In 2018 Ford and Argo AI began testing autonomous vehicles in 6 U.S. cities and Munich, Germany.

Ford has been actively developing self-driving technology since 2018. For three years, the automaker has been testing a commercial autonomous service pilot program in Miami through its subsidiary Argo AI. Recently the automaker announced plans to build a command center for the Argo AI program next to Miami International Airport. The business will open for passengers in March 2022. So far, both the Ford Escape and the Ford Fusion have served in this pilot fleet. Could the F-150 join this list?

In preparation for the launch of Ford’s self-driving commercial service, smart infrastructure features have been installed around Miami. The most recent installation placed several safety nodes at critical intersections around the city. Safety nodes provide data from camera feeds, radar, and lidar to provide self-driving cars with more information.

When will self-driving cars hit the streets?

In short, self-driving cars are already on the street every day and have been for years. Bloomberg reported in 2020 that several automakers had planned to put autonomous taxis on the road by 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic put those plans on hold for Tesla, GM, and other brands. As of now, Waymo is the only company employing self-driving taxis in the U.S.

Waymo sprouted from the Google self-driving car project in 2009. The company offers a ride-hailing service to the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Waymo also offers a commercial trucking service to transport goods without the need for a driver.

Companies like Waymo and Argo AI have proven the self-driving car concept. Commuters are ready to trust the service. Corporations are eager to reduce expenses in trucking, and both applications are safer with AI behind the wheel. Will autonomous taxi customers have access to a self-driving pickup like the Ford F-150?

SUVs are enjoying great popularity in today’s market. And many consumers prefer sportier crossovers. There are even some excellent ones you can buy for less than $30,000. The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is one such SUV, but it barely missed the list.

How is the Jeep Cherokee one of the sportiest SUVs for under $30,000? We’ve got answers.

The sportiest SUVs under $30,000

Recently, the team at U.S. News compiled a list of the 14 sportiest SUVs under $30,000 in 2021. And the 2021 Jeep Cherokee brings up the rear at number 14.

The SUVs that made it onto the list provide better-than-average performance for vehicles in this price range. However, the folks at U.S. News were looking at more than horsepower and torque when making their selections. They also factored in each SUV’s handling, braking performance, and ride quality.

With a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 180 hp, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee doesn’t offer much in the way of performance. Its steering is lackluster and lethargic. U.S. News also points out it exhibits some lean when cornering. It might be a surprise to some that this model even appears on this list.

But the Cherokee offers off-roading prowess. Four-wheel drive, an option for an extra $1,500, gives you five driving modes to choose from to navigate various terrains. The 4WD system optimizes the SUV’s traction no matter where you’re driving and makes you feel comfortable off the pavement.

U.S. News gave the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a performance score of 7.0 out of 10 and an overall score of 7.2 out of 10. It starts at $26,290.

At the top of the list is the 2021 Mazda CX-5, which U.S. News claims is the sportiest SUV under $30,000. Mazda offers two engine options for this compact crossover. One is a turbocharged four-cylinder — the most potent in the compact SUV segment — producing 250 hp with premium gas. However, you can’t get that engine for under $30,000.

But the 2.5-liter four-cylinder under the base-model CX-5’s hood is still athletic. Like other vehicles in the Mazda lineup, the CX-5 handles well, with decent feedback thanks to electrically assisted steering. You won’t feel much body roll in corners, and the suspension is well-balanced.

Right behind the CX-5 is the 2021 Honda CR-V, which is U.S. News’ top-ranked compact SUV overall. With a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission standard, this crossover is quick off the line. It produces 190 hp but feels quicker than that, and the transmission is one of the best you can get in a mainstream compact SUV.

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 rounds out the top three sportiest SUVs under $30,000. It doesn’t have the greatest predicted reliability rating, but its performance makes an impression. It boasts accurate steering, a well-tuned suspension, and great braking performance. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder isn’t the best, making only 148 hp, but the CX-3 handles better than any other subcompact SUV.

An overview of the 2021 Jeep Cherokee

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is unique in the compact crossover segment with its off-roading and towing capabilities. And its Jeep lineage will please weekend warriors and drivers who enjoy time in the great outdoors. It handles many different terrains with ease and provides a comfortable ride.

It’s not the most visually appealing Jeep model, but you can get it with an all-wheel-drive configuration. It also offers an impressive selection of engines, including a turbocharged four-cylinder and a potent V6. The Cherokee can even tow up to 4,500 pounds and take you off-payment.

Overall, though, it doesn’t offer the best value to owners who’re not into off-roading and have no need for towing. It doesn’t get great gas mileage for a compact crossover, either, and it doesn’t have much cargo space.
