Toyota SUVs tend to be long-lasting and reliable. For that reason, they tend to hold their value well, even with 100,000 miles or more. If you’re looking for a clean low-mileage 1990s 4×4, it’s worth considering one that has been imported from the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). Once a foreign vehicle is 25 years past its production date, it becomes eligible for import to the US.

Many Japanese drivers put on fewer miles per year than we generally do in the US. With relatively low-mileage examples still available, a JDM Toyota SUV can be a fantastic option. Here are some models that you can now buy and potentially drive in the US, depending on your local regulations.

1990-1995 Land Cruiser Prado

1990 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado | Toyota

The Land Cruiser is legendary worldwide for being one of the most rugged and reliable SUVs around. The Prado models are no exception and they were new additions to the Toyota lineup for 1990. Though related to the Land Cruiser 70-series, they had unique sheet metal and integrated more conveniences and modern features. Vented disc brakes were standard on both two-door and four-door models of the Prado.

Original JDM Prados had a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel called the 2L-TE. While not exactly bristling with power at 95 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque, it is known for being robust and durable. From 1993, the Prado range was updated with the more gutsy 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE, producing 130 hp and 212 lb-ft of torque. An intercooled version of the 1KZ was also available with 145 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque.

The next generation of the Land Cruiser Prado came in 1996, with longer, wider, and more rounded bodywork. Toyota also improved the suspension with a double-wishbone independent configuration up front, and a new multi-link setup out back. Head and legroom inside were increased as well.

For ’96 Toyota offered a choice between the 1KZ-TE turbo diesel or the 3.4-liter DOHC V6, known as the 5VZ-FE. The V6 was available in the US-spec 4Runner from 1995 through 2004, so parts will generally be more common than those for JDM Toyota diesels. The Prado was also available in a short wheelbase three-door variant called the RX.

1984+ Toyota Hilux Surf: a.k.a. JDM 4Runner

We’ve had the 4Runner in the US since the mid-1980s, but clean low-mileage examples of the early ones are getting pretty rare. Known in Japan as the Hilux Surf, it was available with a wider range of engines than the US-spec 4Runner. JDM models were powered by gasoline inline-fours and V6s, as well as turbo diesels.

With the 2.7-liter and 3.4-liter gasoline models, parts availability should be very similar to the US versions, aside from anything specific to right-hand drive. While that’s a plus, the diesel variants have their own unique advantages in torque and general longevity as well. Plue, there’s the exclusivity factor.

Final thoughts

Thankfully, buying a JDM import isn’t as difficult or time-consuming as it used to be. Toyota SUVs like these are frequently available at auction sites like Bring A Trailer, as well as import-focused dealerships like Japanese Classics. If you like driving something different and can handle the right-hand drive aspect, it’s a neat way to go.

The Insta360 Go 2 is a very small action camera that’s made to go anywhere and do anything. Yes, just like a GoPro camera, but the Go 2 is much sleeker. If anything, it’s the action camera that Apple users will choose over other rugged-looking cameras on the market. It’s simple to use and although it’s small in size, it has plenty of value. Also, it’s great for taking car videos.

The Insta360 Go 2 camera is very versatile

After unboxing the Insta360 Go 2, I couldn’t believe how small it is. It’s 2 inches long and less than an inch wide, which means that it’s about the size of two quarters put together. The starter kit comes with everything you need including a charging case that doubles as a control unit and tripod, a magnetic stand, and two clips that allow you to secure the camera to a hat or your clothes.

Fortunately, mounting the Go 2 is simple as the unit is magnetic, which means that you can mount it in other places as well. In fact, that’s how it clips into the provided mounts, by magnetically sticking to them. I even stuck it to my refrigerator and was able to get a full view of my kitchen, which would be great if I was into creating cooking videos. But alas, I’m not.

Instead, I decided to make a car-related video using the Go 2. Since the “easy mount” clips easily onto a hat to give a “point-of-view” (POV) perspective, I went in that direction.

Here is a video sample of me driving the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid:

I will say that the video quality looks great and the video stabilization works well considering the camera was only mounted via a clip and magnet.

The Go 2 is water-resistant and makes it easy to view media

The Go 2 is also water-resistant for up to four meters and it has 32 GB of storage space onboard. Unlike a GoPro, you can’t stuff SD cards into it for more room, so once you’re out of space, you’ll have to delete some files (Apple, anyone?).

Fortunately, viewing your photos and videos isn’t too hard to do. The device comes with a USB cable to hook it up to a computer and download the files that way. Although, you will need to download the Insta360 Studio app to view the media and edit it. However, the software makes editing the videos and exporting them onto your hard drive a simple task.

Otherwise, you can download the Insta360 app on your Apple or Android device and view and edit the media there. I found that the phone app functionality was easy to learn and use as the camera synced up to my phone quickly. My old GoPro Hero Session 3, on the other hand, always made that part of the process feel like a chore.

Camera resolution

The Insta360 Go 2’s video mode can shoot up to a 2560x1440p resolution at 25 fps, 30 fps, or 50 fps. In addition to taking high-quality videos, the Go2 can take still pictures. Although, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Since the camera doesn’t have a viewfinder, it’s hard to know what it’s capturing unless you have it connected to the phone app. Additionally, the picture quality isn’t too much better than the average cell phone camera, so I would suggest using your phone for still pictures instead.

Aside from normal video and photos, the Go 2 can also take time-lapse and slow-motion videos.

The Insta360 Go 2 has some confusing functions

The Insta360 Go 2 is very easy to use, learn, and set up if you’re not technically inclined. However, some of its operations do come with some confusion. For example, if you don’t put the camera in its charging case to control it, you can operate it just by pressing on the unit itself.

A single press will wake the device up and start a video recording, while two presses will snap a picture. If the camera happens to be on already, then one press will take a video, while two presses take a time-lapse video. Trust me, it’s confusing at first (even Tom’s Guide noted that).

I spent a lot of time inadvertently taking short videos and pictures of myself when trying to figure it out. For this reason, I ended up resorting to only using the camera with the phone app or when it was connected to the charger.

How much does the Insta360 Go 2 cost?

You can currently purchase the Insta360 Go 2 camera from a variety of retailers for $299. From a capability standpoint, it’s no GoPro, but it is easier to use. Also, its conveniently small size makes it easy to mount almost anywhere, whether it’s your fridge, your hat, or somewhere more exciting.

Ultimately, the Go 2 might be tiny, but considering everything it can do, it’s big on value. Plus, Apple users (like myself) will dig the design the most.

When the 2021 Lexus RC F Fuji Speedway Edition was initially dropped off to me, I marveled at the amount of carbon fiber that the car was wearing. There’s a carbon fiber hood and roof cap, and let’s not forget that large carbon fiber wing sitting on the trunk. It looks like a car from the Fast and Furious franchise. Truth be told, I knew almost nothing about this particular Lexus RC at the time. But after spending some time in it, I’ve realized that it is really fast, but I don’t feel like it’s that furious.

The Lexus RC F Fuji Speedway Edition is a very limited production car

2021 Lexus RC F Fuji Edition | Lexus

The Lexus RC is a bit of an odd duck in the lineup. It’s a two-door coupe that’s meant to be sporty but feels really soft instead. The Lexus RC F kicks things up a notch with a V8 engine under the hood, so I gather that it feels even sportier (I’ve actually never driven one). However, the RC F Fuji Speedway Edition turns things way up by offering race-ready parts like the aforementioned carbon fiber bits in addition to other sporty features.

Those features include large carbon-ceramic brakes that sit behind 19-inch alloy wheels in addition to a Torsen limited-slip differential. All of that hardware works harmoniously with its stout 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 472 hp @ 7,100 rpm and 395 lb-ft of torque. The power is routed through an eight-speed transmission and out to the rear wheels. But all of that stuff isn’t what makes this car special.

Instead, what makes it special is the fact that I’m driving 1 of only 60 Lexus RC F Fuji Editions that will ever be produced. And somehow, I’m left feeling like I want a little more out of it.

It’s fast, but it doesn’t feel fast

2021 Lexus RC F Fuji Edition | Lexus

Car and Driver said that the RC F Fuji Edition looks like “a race car stripped of its numbers and sponsorship decals,” and I completely agree. They also put the car through its paces on their test track, which resulted in a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds. That’s a fast car, especially considering it weighs 3,839 pounds, but I’m still not convinced. Then again, I realize that it’s probably because I don’t have a race track to drive this thing on.

I have driven it around town and on the freeway, though, just like many of the lucky 60 owners of this car will do. In “comfort mode,” the RC F feels almost as sedate and easy-to-drive as its ES sedan stablemate. The suspension softens up and the steering feels somewhat light.

However, throw it into “sport” or “sport +” and the steering stiffens up, the throttle is more responsive, and the car sounds more lively. In those modes, it’s hard not to bury the throttle every chance you can get. I can tell you that the sonorous roar of the monstrous V8, especially in the upper RPM range, made me want to keep my foot to the floor.

But since I could only drive the RC F Fuji on the street, and mash the pedal between stoplights, that’s where the fun ended for me. Don’t get me wrong, the car feels quick off the line. But the shifts from the traditional automatic transmission bog it down a little whereas a dual-clutch transmission might not. Additionally, its high-rpm nature is probably a blast to drive on a track, but on the street, it can be tough to keep it there without inadvertently speeding into the triple digits.

The car makes getting on the freeway a lot of fun, though.

I can’t afford a speeding ticket

Ultimately, the 2021 Lexus RC F Fuji Speedway Edition is an extremely well-built and very fast sports coupe. But there’s a reason that it’s named after a racetrack and not a street. It belongs in a place where the driver can take advantage of its high-revving nature and relentless agility.

And yes, technically, I could drive it like that on the street, but I can’t afford a speeding ticket. So for now, I’ll drive it normally. It’s too bad that it doesn’t feel as impressive when you can’t drive it at its full potential. But at least it looks really cool with all of that carbon fiber.

The pandemic and its shortages have caused huge effects on the economy, and one of the hardest-hit areas has been car sales. Fewer cars being made means higher prices for what cars are made, and rising gas prices mean higher prices to own a car. Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable new cars available right now, and they’ll be affordable at the pump, too.

It’s a seller’s market right now

Any folks who’ve considered buying a new car lately probably understand better than anyone. It’s a seller’s market right now. Due to the chip shortage, many automakers had to cut car production, leading to fewer cars hitting dealerships. Some automakers have prioritized chips for their more popular models, which means a shortage of less popular cars.

Many of those popular models are bigger cars like SUVs. This trend creates another issue, as gas prices are steadily rising due to lower oil production worldwide. SUVs can be fuel-efficient, but generally, they are less fuel-efficient than a sedan. Many customers spend a lot of money on a new car, only to spend more money on gas due to how inefficient their car is.

10 affordable new cars in 2021

According to Autoweek, there are a lot of affordable options right now. The 2022 Kia Soul, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta, the 2021 Hyundai Veloster, the 2022 Subaru Impreza, and the 2021 Hyundai Venue are great options that cost about $20,000 each.

These cars all have their own quirks, but they all get good fuel economies, especially compared to SUVs. The Subaru Impreza, even as a hatchback, gets 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on highways. It also gets up to 55 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The Kia Soul is actually an SUV. But it’s such a small SUV that it actually gets a pretty good fuel economy too.

More affordable options include the 2021 Kia Rio, the 2021 Hyundai Ascent, the 2021 Nissan Versa, the 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage, and the 2021 Chevy Spark. These cars range from about $14,500 for the Chevy Spark to about $17,000 for the Kia Rio. According to Autoweek, the Chevy Spark is currently the cheapest brand-new car available in the United States. It should also get a great fuel economy of about 33 mpg combined.

The slightly more expensive options

The Chevy Spark may not be for everyone, but Autoweek has a few more affordable options. The 2021 Nissan Sentra, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra, the 2021 Nissan Kicks, the 2021 Toyota Corolla, and the 2021 Mazda 3 cost between $20,000 and $21,000. These may be great options for folks who got just a bit more to spend in their budget.

The Corolla is one of the most popular cars right now. Some folks might not want to consider buying a lesser-known car like the Mitsubishi Mirage or the Hyundai Venue when the Corolla has a great reputation and is relatively affordable. According to Autoweek, the Corolla starts at about $21,000, which isn’t too far from the rest of Autoweek’s list price tag.

Additionally, the Nissan Kicks is a small SUV, just like the Kia Soul. Autoweek’s list provides some affordable SUV options, as well as affordable sedan options. Just like the Kia Soul, the Nissan Kicks has a decent fuel economy, too.
