The new car chip shortage is a hot topic right now. And no, that doesn’t mean that Bosch is going to open a store selling black band t-shirts to Scene kids. It’s the reason that the autos market, both new and used, is going insane right now. Moreover, it’s the reason you should not be buying cars right now. Hell, you shouldn’t even be buying an electric toothbrush right now because the parts are so expensive. Now, it’s time to take a hard look at all of the factors that got us here.

The Coronavirus caused the new car shortage

Let’s start with the most obvious reason for the new car chip shortage. The Coronavirus has, frankly, been an issue for much longer than it needed to be. Hell, look at New Zealand. Regardless of your stance on the whole virus ordeal, it’s a big reason for the new car chip shortage. Turns out, if people are getting sick and being sent home, they aren’t out building cars, or more importantly, semiconductors.

As a result, that drives up the price. Demand for new cars is high while people try and get outside while they can. There will be another round of lockdowns in the US if we can’t control the virus, and people are getting out of the house any chance they get. As demand spikes, factory workers are still at the mercy of whatever COVID-related necessities are in effect at their workplace. Meaning, they can’t make cars fast enough. According to a study by iSeeCars, prices are up 32% in the last year.

Bosch says supply chains are another cause of the chip shortage

However, as we all know, that spike in price isn’t just related to a spike in demand. No, the new car chip shortage is also caused by, well, chips. Or more scientifically, semiconductors. These little pieces of silicon control just about every electronic device in your house. Unfortunately, these things take time to make. Bosch says it’s because our supply lines are outdated, and I’m inclined to believe them.

As a result, the German semiconductor manufacturer has put billions into new plants to produce semiconductors. However, it isn’t just the places that make semiconductors that are contributing to the new car chip shortage. We also need the materials that go into semiconductors. Those materials, like silicon, take a long time to process and refine. This, in turn, worsens the supply of semiconductors.

When will the chip shortage end?

Question is, when does this stop? Frankly, not anytime soon. Bosch says things will keep sucking well into 2022. It’s fine, I didn’t want to play the new Spiderman game on my semiconductor-addled PS5 anyway. All joking aside, we’re going to be waiting for a while. However, once those new plants and supply lines go into effect over the next 6-12 months, we can expect to see things get easier.

Ford has been having an amazing year in sales. Semiconductor chip shortages have disrupted production but America is still showing its support for the blue oval brand in a major way. The Ford F-150 Lightning received over 100,000 preorders. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the best-selling EVs this year. Even the Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid is getting some love. Now, you can lease the hybrid SUV for less than $28,000.

The 2021 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid starts at $33,075. According to MotorTrend, you can now lease the hybrid SUV for $27,480. This is over a 20% discount on the Ford hybrid SUV.

The offer is regional and applies to New York, LA, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver Philadelphia, and plenty of other states and cities. Leasing the SUV is a great idea for consumers that want to try hybrid technology for the first time.

The main selling point behind the Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid is the fuel economy. The hybrid gets 44 miles per gallon in the city and 37 miles per gallon on the highway. It can travel for 37 miles using just electricity. Leasing the hybrid SUV can save you major dollars at the pump.

Should you lease a 2021 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid?

Ford offers 24, 36, 39, and 48-month leases for the 2021 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid. Ford has several annual mile options ranging from 7,500 to 19,500 miles. The average American drives close to 13,500 miles a year. If 13,500 annual miles were selected during the leasing agreement drivers can expect to pay about $606 a month to lease the Escape Plug-in Hybrid for 24 months with no down payment.

Drivers that selected 13,500 annual miles can expect to pay about $523 monthly on a 36-month lease. It would cost roughly $522 a month for a 39 month lease and close to $536 for a 48 month lease using the same annual mileage calculation without any down payment.

Leasing a Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid for two years with 13,500 annual mileage amounts to at least $14,544. This is certainly not the most affordable option but if you want to experience what a hybrid SUV has to offer for a brief period of time, the Escape Plug-in Hybrid is a great option. Leasing a hybrid is also a great way to save money on gas and reduce carbon emissions as major automakers roll out electric vehicles that you may be interested in owning long-term.

Is the Ford Escape PHEV a good SUV?

The Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid is one of the best hybrid SUVs available today. It has an easy-to-use infotainment system. It also has a comfortable cabin and plenty of standard safety features. It drives and handles well and its fuel-efficiency is a testament to the strides Ford has made in fuel economy over the last few years.

The hybrid SUV isn’t the most luxurious SUV in its class. Competitors like the Toyota RAV4 include better cabin materials. The hybrid is also less roomy than the gas-powered Ford Escape. It makes up for its lack of luxury with affordability and competitive fuel economy. Ford has proven that it can produce plug-in hybrid models that are just as good as the competition when it comes to practicality. The hybrid SUV is the stereotypical efficient and reliable Ford model with a modern-day twist.

Don’t buy a 2021 Nissan Leaf. At least, not right now. You’ve heard the news by now, hopefully from me, that both the new and used car market is, well, a bit of a shitshow right now. Things could be better for dealerships. Things could be better full stop. But you shouldn’t buy a 2021 Nissan Leaf EV because of that, and not because it’s a bad car. Honestly, the Leaf is a great car, now just isn’t the time to get one.

Why you shouldn’t buy a Nissan Leaf

Small hatchbacks are kinda my jam | Nissan

As I’m sure you know (unless you’re under a rock), new car sales are pretty rough right now. Consumers can’t get what they want, and that includes the 2021 Nissan Leaf. Normally, that’s a pretty good reason to try and get one. Then, you could flip it and make an extra “tax return” in profit. Of course, the semiconductor shortage has something to say about that. Consumers can’t get what they want because chips can’t get made fast enough.

As a result, buyers are looking to the used market. Per iSeeCars, prices on the 2021 Nissan Leaf, as well as other model years, are up 48% from June of last year. Or, to put it another way, you’ll pay around a $6,500 premium for a 2021 Nissan Leaf. As good as the 2021 Nissan Leaf is, it’s not “pay an extra $6,500” good.

The 2021 Nissan Leaf is actually a really good car

The all-black interior of the 2021 Nissan Leaf
The Leaf is, honestly, really good | Nissan

And that brings me nicely to my next point. As I said above, the little EV from Nissan is actually a really good car. It does car things very well. A-to-B transport? No problem, the model got a good range bump in 2018. Comfort? Nissan is absolutely killing it with their seats lately. Moreover, you get that great practical layout.

Let’s talk specs. For your $31,000 you get 215 hp. That’s honestly all you’ll need out of a torque-rocket EV anyway. Remember, horsepower is how fast you can go, and torque is how quick you get there. You’ll also get around 215 miles of EV range. No, it’s not a Tesla Model S, but you do get more than enough to get your 2021 Nissan Leaf around the block a few hundred times.

When will the chip shortage stop?

Now normally, you could have all this from $31,000. However, the chip shortage makes the act of getting a 2021 Nissan Leaf something of an issue. As we know, suppliers like TSMC and Bosche simply cannot manufacture enough right now. Ergo, price premium. However, there is some hope. Bosch just built a big new plant to build chips in, and while it’s not running yet, we could be back to normal sometime in 2022. For now, don’t buy that 2021 Nissan Leaf. It’ll be a cool 15G’s in three years, and by then it’ll be a smoking deal, chip shortage or not.

Another day, another drifting mishap. This time it happened to a Toyota Fortuner SUV in Pakistan, of all places. It looks like the urge to go out and do some drifting has no boundaries.

Drifting with a top-heavy SUV may not be the best idea

Drifting Toyota Fortuner SUV rolls over | Facebook

Sliding from side to side, the top-heavy Toyota SUV got tippy. And once that started the hapless driver could not control it. Another drifting calamity was the result. This is why most professional drifters do it in sports cars.

Posted on the Offroad Club Pakistan Facebook page, the driver cut that last turn a little too hard. What’s maybe crazier is that the SUV was full of passengers. Without the skills necessary to slide around on the sand, should he be allowed to endanger passengers, too?

As you watch, the Fortuner is easily plopped back onto its tires with the help of a winch. But the damage is rather extensive for having just landed on its side. And both of the driver’s side tires got blown out; probably from the lateral force.

When the tires dug into the sand the drifting became a barrel-roll

Once the tires gave out it was alley-oop. The post says that the driver was not injured. Nothing was said about the passengers.

Even under good conditions, it is hard to judge how a car will react in soaked sand at the beach. In this case, the sand was soft enough for the tires to dig in. If the sand were more solidly packed, it would have been just as easy for the SUV to wash out without incident.

So we doubt anyone with drifting knowledge would suggest doing this. Still, the pull to do some shenanigans with friends at the beach can be compelling. This just had too many factors that didn’t favor this coming out fine.

The Toyota Fortuner is much like the Hilux pickup in the US

As for the Toyota Fortuner, it is not sold in the US. It falls into the same category as the Hilux pickup. It is popular, sells in huge volumes wherever it is sold, but can’t meet emissions requirements in the US.

Within the Toyota hierarchy, it uses the same platform as the Hilux. It is similar to the Highlander and Lexus GX in the US. When the new Hilux pickup debuted in 2020 a new Fortuner did as well. The seven-seater does well in Australia, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

With the updated Fortuner it featured a more aggressive face and more rugged looks. It rides on 18-inch wheels, too. And there is also a built-in skid plate, large fog lamps, and slimmer LED headlights.
