Some wild one-off Ferrari creations have come out of its Special Projects division. These are commissions taking an extreme amount of money and connections. For instance, guitarist Eric Clapton is the recipient of one. It is that kind of Ferrari clientele that orders a one-off by Ferrari Special Projects like the coming SP48 Unica.

Is the SP48 Unica based on an existing Ferrari?

Ferrari F8 Tributo | Ferrari

What is an SP48 Unica? Ferrari is starting off with the new F8 Tributo. With over 700 hp and exquisite looks, it’s one of the most potent and beautiful Ferraris today. But a Ferrari enthusiast somewhere is not happy owning just another Tributo. Whoever this is, he or she has commissioned the Unica.

Someone on a Ferrari chat forum posted a badge found on the internet revealing an “SP48 Unica.” Little is known about this one-off Tributo. But here is some info floating around that gives us some clues. First, it is a given that this modified Tributo will take certain styling cues from a classic Ferrari from the past.

Most Ferrari Special Projects cars share design cues from past famous Ferraris

As you may recall, the SP38 was a 488 GTB with cues from an F40. This is one way that Special Projects creates these unique Ferraris. Right now we don’t know which classic model will be chosen to share some of its features.

Most likely SP48 will also see some engine tweaks. A stock F8 Tributo comes with a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8. It puts out 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. Could SP48 see close to 800 hp?

Another Special Projects Ferrari was revealed; F125 TDE

And while on the subject of Ferrari Special Projects cars in development, an image of another one-off showed up a couple of months ago. Called F125 TDE, it is based on an F12 TDF. Design-wise, it is like nothing Ferrari currently makes.

While the F125 TDE is surely finished by now, we won’t be seeing SP48 until sometime in 2022. Unless, of course, someone leaks images, as they should.

For a while, the Internet has been circulating this rumor that a legislator walked between two vehicles and bruised their shin on a ball hitch. While it might seem kind of far-fetched for a legislator to have a vendetta against vehicle accessories, some have tried to pass laws requiring removing or covering ball hitches when not towing. So, it begs the question: is it illegal to drive around with an exposed ball hitch anywhere in the United States?

What is a ball hitch and what can be towed using one?

A ball hitch is simply an accessory used with a receiver hitch. It’s comprised of a shank that slides into the receiver tube and a trailer ball platform. The trailer ball platform is designed to make attaching a trailer as easy as possible while providing a solid mounting platform. Ball hitches come in various sizes and capacities, making them one of the most commonly used trailer hitch accessories. Some are made of a single piece, or fixed, while others are comprised of two or more pieces, or adjustable.

Ball hitches are capable of towing between one ton and 15 tons gross trailer weight (GTW). To put that in perspective, the highest-class ball hitch could easily tow a four to five-car hauler trailer or two single-propeller light aircrafts. If a semi-trailer is a little too much for what you’re hauling, the correct class of ball hitch can definitely handle the job.

Nearly all ball hitches feature one or more holes up and down the shank for accepting a hitch pin or hitch lock. Either device prevents the shank from sliding out of the receiver, safeguarding it from theft. You may also use a universal coupler lock along with the coupler latch to keep the coupler securely latched onto your ball hitch.

Sizes, classes, and weight ratings: how to choose?

There are primarily seven different types of trailer hitches and four standard trailer ball sizes: 1-7/8 inches, 2 inches, 2-5/16 inches, and 3 inches. It’s important to note that those measurements refer to the diameter of the ball. These four sizes are the industry standard for ball hitches made and sold in the United States. By standardizing ball hitch sizes, the trailer industry as a whole wanted to be sure consumers were able to couple and tow easily.

According to CURT Manufacturing, “When choosing a trailer ball, first select the ball diameter by matching it to the coupler size. Most manufacturers stamp or label the correct trailer ball size on the coupler. Make sure that your coupler and trailer ball have a solid connection before towing and that all necessary adjustments have been made.

A vehicle’s trailer hitch setup and the type of trailer are determinate factors when one chooses a trailer hitch. Besides types, you have five hitch classes with individual weight ratings. Generally, you would want to pay particular attention to the GTW capacity. The second rating of importance is the maximum tongue weight (TW) or the total weight at the coupling point.

Your TW should ideally be between 10% to 15% of your trailer’s GTW. TW capacities range from as little as 200 pounds maximum for Class 1 to as much as 2,700 pounds maximum for Class 5 commercial duty.

Is it illegal to have a hitch if you’re not towing anything?

In a Q&A section of the Duluth News Tribune, the public information officer with the Minnesota State Patrol, Sergeant Neil Dickenson was posed this question by a reader: “I was wondering if it is illegal to have the ball hitch in the receiver of my truck if I am not pulling any trailers at that time? Also, is it illegal to have more than one ball on my bumper?”

According to Sgt. Dickenson, “No, it is not illegal to have a ball hitch in the receiver of a truck when not pulling a trailer at that time. It is not illegal to have more than one ball hitch on the bumper. But with that being said, you need to be aware that multiple ball hitches on the bumper could obstruct the rear license plate.”

Minnesota law states that it’s “unlawful to cover any assigned letters and numbers or the name of the state of origin of a license plate with any material whatever…” That said, this holds true for most states in the U.S., though you’d be wise to double-check the laws wherever you reside.

Recalls are always due to an issue that can’t be ignored. However, this doesn’t mean that all recalls are as serious as others. For instance, last year Range Rovers had another recall for the rear spoiler coming off. Well, Land Rover is taking the plunge again and recalling more than 111,000 Range Rover Sports for leaking fuel tanks. Needless to say, leaking fuel is a bit more of an immediate issue than a spoiler coming off.

111,000 older Range Rovers are getting recalled

According to Consumer Reports, 111,000 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUVs are being recalled from the 2010 through 2013 model years and Land Rover LR4 SUVs from the 2010 through 2016 model years because their fuel tanks may crack. This cracking fuel tank can easily lead to leaking fuel. Not only is this terrible for the environment, but it’s also clearly a serious fire hazard.

The models that are seeing the cracking gas tanks and fuel leaks are primarily the 3.0-liter V6 and V8 models.

Land Rover is telling customers how to detect if their Range Rover’s fuel tank has cracked. This feels like an unnecessary thing to explain but Land Rover has to cover their bases. Affected Range Rover models may smell like gasoline, or even see a visible puddle of fuel unearth the SUV after sitting. There may also be an amber warning light that appears on the instrument cluster.

Anything having to do with fuel leaking is a serious and dangerous cause for a recall. In some circumstances, Land Rover customers have even seen fires due to the fuel leak because the static charge that cars can build may spark the fuel. The other danger is the unlit fumes themselves. If these fumes are confined to a smaller space like a garage, they can be harmful to breathe.

What caused the Range Rover recall?

When Land Rover Range Rover customers first started complaining about the fuel leaks on these models, Land Rover technicians found that, in many cases, the fuel flange for the fuel tank had cracked. Since this problem is on older models, many customers have likely already paid to have the recall issue fixed. Land Rover is telling those customers that they can be reimbursed for those charges via a payment plan.

The new Land Rover Defender is paying for these older issues

Land Rover has been a popular brand for decades. People love them. However, these SUVs have been woefully unreliable for years and people are starting to care.

In the case of the 2021 Land Rover Defender, Consumer Reports liked so many things about it, but it still isn’t recommended because of the Marque’s horrible history of reliability. This is truly a shame as so many journalists (including this one) have tested the new generation of Defenders and loved them. Hell, it won SUV of the year from MotorTrend.

All that being said, it will be interesting to see how many customers buy them due to the lingering fear of horrible reliability that the brand has come to be known for. This recall is just another in a long string of recalls and bad press for the Land Rover Range Rover.
