Few things compare to revving up your bike and hitting the open road. If that road is scenic and challenging, even better. But some of the most thrilling road trips are also among the most treacherous. Here are four of the most surprisingly dangerous motorcycle rides in America.

Beartooth Highway is a roller coaster of a motorcycle ride

Winding along nearly 70 miles of switchbacks and hairpin turns, Montana’s Beartooth Highway zigzags through some of the most beautiful scenery in America. This thrilling stretch of U.S. Highway 212 that extends from Red Lodge, Montana, to the northern gateway to Yellowstone in Wyoming perfectly defines what a motorcycle ride is about, National Geographic reports.

As you travel this roller coaster of a road, keep an eye open for stark tundra, glacial lakes, spectacular waterfalls, and wildlife. Among the many birds and animals that you might glimpse are elk, bison, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and grizzly bears, Yellowstone Touring Company explains.

During the winter months, this National Scenic Byway might be closed due to excessive snow, and unpredictable weather conditions can make the road treacherous any time of year, so be sure to scout the Montana Department of Transportation road report before you roll out.

Try Twisted Sisters for a white-knuckle motorcycle ride

If you think of Texas as a flat state with few curves, do think again. Comprising a trio of connected Ranch Roads, Twisted Sisters offers motorcyclists an exhilarating ride replete with narrow passes between rock formations, whipping winds, and plenty of harrowing drop-offs, Only in Your State reports.

Rev your engine and head out on Ranch Road 335 south along the Nueces River through Barksdale and continue until you reach RR 337 around Camp Wood. If bats are your thing, take a side trip to Devil’s Sinkhole, where millions of the nocturnal flying mammals reside. At Camp Wood, veer onto RR 337 and head northeast.

The first half of RR 337 provides 65 loops to lean into, along with more than 130 white-knuckle direction changes before you roar into Vanderpool. If time allows, take another side trip into Lost Maples State Natural Area before returning to RR 337 and making your way to Leakey to merge onto RR 336. Watch out for wandering livestock, and carefully heed the road sign that reminds riders of the 10 motorcyclists who lost their lives traversing Twisted Sisters since 2006, Texas Heritage for Living reports.

Pacific Coast Highway grows more treacherous as the views get better

Stretching for more than 1,650 miles, Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most iconic roads in America. PCH, as it is commonly called, extends from the southernmost tip of Baja California all the way to the northern reaches of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. For the purposes of this post, we’ll start at the top and ride down the coast into California.

Rev your engine in Olympia, and loop around the peninsula on Highway 101 until you reach the small Washington town of Long Beach. Take a side trip to the cranberry bog or enjoy a campfire on the sand, Roving Motion recommends. Then get back on your motorcycle and roll down the stunning coast to Cannon Beach, Oregon, where you can view sea stack rocks that are nothing short of stunning. Spend the night because daytime views along the Oregon-to-California stretch of PCH are the best. You also stand a better chance of navigating the narrow road as you hug coastal curves that are fully illuminated by sunlight.

Gas up early the next day, and prepare to encounter the largest trees you’ve ever seen as you roll into redwood country. Once you’ve had an eyeful, head south on 101 until it connects with Highway 1. As you travel south, the views get better and better, but the road also becomes more hazardous, Dangerous Roads warns.

Perils to watch out for include landslides, hairpin turns, and cliff-high roads without guardrails. Of course, you don’t have to travel the entire highway to see what it’s all about. Even a short motorcycle ride on this stretch is enough to make you fall in love.

Tail of the Dragon lives up to its name

Nearly 40 miles long, Tail of the Dragon offers a white-knuckle motorcycle ride you won’t easily forget. Once known only to locals, who refer to it as “that damned road to Tennessee,” this dragon tail–shaped highway appeared in the biker cult classic Two-Lane Blacktop.

Begin or end your road trip at the intersection of NC 28 and US 129, where you can grab a bite to eat and gas up or spend the night at Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort, Roadtrippers reports. Ride in the fall, and this thrillingly dangerous road offers winding turns and autumnal foliage — along with the ghost of at least one Civil War soldier purported to haunt Tail of the Dragon.

If you have paid attention to any automotive news this week, then you know about the arrival of the 2022 Toyota GR 86. The GR 86 is big news because it’s Toyota’s rear-drive coupe that’s far more affordable than its Supra stablemate. Additionally, many outlets have confirmed that it’s fun to drive and far better than the last iteration of the Toyota 86. But what improvements did Toyota make?

The Toyota GR 86’s body is sleeker and stronger than its predecessor

Take one look at the 2022 Toyota GR 86 and you might get Porsche vibes from its front end. This time around, Toyota incorporated sleeker styling cues and larger headlights than the outgoing 86 model, in addition to the duckbill rear lip spoiler.

But the new GR 86 isn’t just about aesthetics, in fact, Toyota even added some structural rigidity in the form of cross members between the front suspension and frame. There are also high-strength fasteners that connect the rear frame to the suspension mounts in order to handle more of a load when cornering. And while the 86 predecessor featured an aluminum hood, the GR 86 ups the ante with its strengthened aluminum hood, roof, and fenders for some additional weight savings.

Underneath that stronger aluminum hood is a new powerplant as well. No, there’s no turbocharger or supercharger to be found. But if you have X-Ray vision, then you would be able to see that the engine was bored out to 2.4-liters as opposed to the outgoing 2.0-liter mill.

Car and Driver notes that the increase in displacement led to an increase in power as did a smoothed out intake plenum and exhaust plumbing for better airflow. The GR 86 produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is a nice bump over the 86’s 205 hp and 156 lb-ft. However, the option of either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission remains the same.

The new model has a few new interior features

The 2022 GR 86’s interior doesn’t look too much different than the outgoing model. However, buyers will be treated to a better touchscreen infotainment display and a semi-virtual instrument cluster. And if you’re an audiophile, then you’ll want to opt for the available 10-inch subwoofer and upgraded 8-speaker sound system in the higher Premium trim level.

Toyota GR 86 buyers will also get a membership to NASA

No, we don’t mean that the GR 86 buyers will be clinking champagne glasses with Richard Branson in space. The NASA we’re referring to is the National Auto Sport Association. That’s right, all 2022 Toyota GR 86 buyers will get a free one-year membership that will enable them to attend one high-performance driving event on a race track in addition to a nice discount on tickets to any NASA-sanctioned events.

What better way to get to know your new GR 86 than flogging on a race track? Overall, we can see why the all-new Toyota GR 86 has been the talk of the town this week. It shows a lot of promise and looks like a lot of affordable fun.

EV maker Rivian has set its sights high. The brand wants to take down Tesla’s market share, and fast. To do that, they need to make cars. To do that, they need a place to build them. In light of that, the brand has begun construction on a second factory out on the Texas plains. However, this isn’t a solo venture. Rivian, like many EV automakers, got a nice helping hand from Uncle Sam. To the tune of millions.

7,500 jobs makes Rivian a big player in Texas

A pretty factory does not a success make | Rivian

So, just how many millions did the SoCal EV maker get? How about 440 of them. Yep, $440 million. However, as things sit right now, CEO RJ Scaringe’s company needs the production. Especially if they want to take on Tesla, which has roughly, well, more factories than they do. It’s purely a numbers game. Presently, the company’s Normal, Illinois factory only has two production lines. For now, that’s OK, as they only make two cars, the R1T and R1S. Both of those are effectively the same vehicle with either a truck or SUV body on them.

So, clearly, production needs to expand if Rivian wants to be a player in the new EV game. Moreover, that’s good news for Fort Worth, Texas, where the plant will be built. The company projects that by 2027, they’ll have added more than 7,500 jobs to the area. And that’s not all. Reportedly, there’s also plans to include a community in the area built for roughly 50,000 new residents. Guess it’s not just Joe Rogan telling people to move to Texas.

Tesla’s market share is dwindling

Can Rivian beat Elon? | Rivian

If you ask me, Rivian is in the right place at the right time. They’re a small (ish) up-and-coming EV company that is perfectly positioned to take advantage of our political climate. By that, I mean Joe Biden and his EV push. President Biden has made it clear that he envisions an EV future for the US, even going so far as to say that he wants half of new car sales by 2030 to be EVs. After all, that’s how Rivian got this money in the first place.

That $440 million is from Uncle Sam, a small welcome gift for getting more EVs on the road over the coming decades. More specifically, that tax incentive is from the government of Fort Worth. This recent funding from city governments, as well as the federal government also signals a shift in the winds for Tesla. Marred by recent controversy, the company can no longer rely on fart noises and whimsy to sell cars. And now, the rest of the EV market is getting a boost from the government.

Is Amazon backing and government money enough?

A leather bag and cell phone are a marketing must | Rivian

In total, Rivian has raised north of $8 billion in funding from big names, the government notwithstanding. Amazon, Ford, and Fidelity are all putting their weight behind Rivian. Simply put, Rivian is set to leave Tesla out in the cold if this trend continues. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if all that money went into making a cohesive product that’s intuitive, usable, and just plain good enough to beat Tesla.

Indian Motorcycle has been supplying iconic motorcycles since 1901. To celebrate its 120th anniversary, it released a limited-edition 2021 Chieftain Elite, originally introduced in 2017, though the original Chieftain was introduced in 2014. But if you prefer the older Indian models, like the 101 Scout, a model many consider the best Indian ever produced, you generally have to search online listings and scour the internet for someone willing to part with a classic and rare motorcycle. Enter Kiwi Indian Motorcycle Company.

The history of Indian Motorcycle

The Indian Motorcycle company was originally founded in 1897 to produce bicycles. In 1901, the company produced the first Indian motorcycle with a 1.75 bhp single-cylinder engine. Sales soared, and in 1905 the company built the first V-twin factory racer and became a worthy competitor in racing, breaking several records.

Indian produced its first street version of the V-twin as well as a roadster in 1907. The company continued producing motorcycles, supplying the United States government during World War I and World War II, and supplying motorcycles for police officers.

Unfortunately, the company struggled after World War II and went through numerous owners and bankruptcy filings before successfully remerging in 2006 as Indian Motorcycle Company, which Polaris then acquired in 2011. Polaris began producing Indian-branded touring and cruising motorcycles, but no classics.

Kiwi Indian Motorcycles

Kiwi Indian was founded in 1988 by Mike Tomas, who developed a love of classic Indian motorcycles at the age of 17. His company offers high-quality parts for people who want to restore older Indian motorcycles. Tomas personally has a 1941 741 model and a 1924 Big Chief basket case, both of which he did the restoration on. The real prompt for his business was the lack of quality parts for Indian motorcycles, so he started building his own.

Tomas has never looked at Kiwi Indian as a business, just extending his passion for Indian motorcycles. He is also passionate about producing quality parts people can trust, which he proves by riding his own bikes worldwide. Tomas does not even own a motorcycle that is not an Indian, nor does he own one built after 1953. And according to him, his prices are “ruffling feathers,” in a good way.

Build your own Indian Motorcycle Replica

In addition to supplying high-quality parts to people looking to restore older bikes, Kiwi Indian also offers you the chance to have a custom-built Indian Motorcycle Replica. They have five different models to choose from. The 1911 Board Track Racer, the 1917 Kiwi Power Plus, similar to the 1911 Board tracker, but with more functionality, the 1920s 101 Chout, the 1939 Chieftain, and the HD Board Tracker. Kiwi handcrafts each motorcycle and every component of the engine, so they are truly custom motorcycles. You can equip your Indian with everything from a toolbox to an electric starter.

Indian motorcycles have been around for 120 years, and they are highly sought after, with a massive fan base. They continue innovating and offering vintage touches, such as a sidecar for the 2022 Indian Chief from Iwan Bikes. But if you really want a classic, pre-war Indian motorcycle, don’t waste time searching the internet and other ads for bikes for sale. Indian Motorcycle Replicas from Kiwi Indian are high-quality, and most importantly, they won’t break the bank. And how cool would it be to have a custom 1911 Board Track Racer to ride around town on?
