Perfectionists rejoice! Porsche recently revealed a concept interior for an all-electric six-passenger van with a symmetrical interior. Granted, the layout is unconventional, and will likely never see production. But the inspiration and philosophies behind the Renndienst are unique, to say the least.

Porsche Renndienst Interior | Porsche

Porsche describes it as “the interior of the future”

The first thing anyone would notice is the one and only front seat. Centered in the cabin, it would the driver a full view while operating the car. But his front seat isn’t just a seat, it’s a captain’s chair. And when the driver no longer wishes to drive, they can swivel to face the passengers.

The whole concept was designed around autonomous driving, a vaporwave term for technology that doesn’t really exist yet, as well as the overall passenger experience. And this captain’s chair is just one of the features integrating that idea. The two dashboard screens serve as the side view mirrors, both of which are equally visible. And because of the center-mounted front seat, the passengers in the second row get an unobstructed view of the road.

Granted, we said “almost entirely symmetrical.” Split the interior down the middle, from the steering wheel to the trunk, and you’ll notice a few differences. One minor detail is the gas and brake pedals, which wouldn’t make sense if they were mounted any other way. But more significant than that, the sliding doors open on one side of the car. The other half is entirely enclosed, which Porsche says the occupants can “retreat to.”

So it’s a strange electric van that’ll never get made, but would it interest you to know that this unconventional concept was inspired by an old Volkswagen Type 2?

The Renndienst was inspired by an old Volkswagen Bus

Porsche Renndienst Concept and Volkswagen Type 2 Bus
Porsche Renndienst and Volkswagen Type 2 Bus | Porsche

This isn’t just any VW Bus, it’s Porsche’s Rennsport Racing service vehicle. With a split roof and red livery, the Bus carried all the tools they’d need to fix any problems on the track. And certain flatbed variations were built to transport the cars to and from races. The concept inspired by it, while still a van, wouldn’t be used as a service vehicle.

If this electric concept ever did make it to production, Porsche could use it as a transport vehicle for their Formula E team. Capable of fitting all the drivers inside, the Renndienst could serve as the perfect means to that end. But, as mentioned, this concept is and always will be a concept. But that doesn’t mean the Renndienst or even the Volkswagen Bus for that matter will be gone for good.

On sale in 2023, the Volkswagen ID Buzz combines the electric powertrain of the Renndienst concept with the manufacturability of the Bus. In other words, unlike the Renndienst, it’s actually being built.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz takes a few pages from the Bus and the Renndienst

In Europe, the Volkswagen Buzz electric van will come as both a passenger and a cargo vehicle. In the states, however, it’ll only come as a passenger van. And while the styling cues and namesake of the Buzz are heavily inspired by the bus, the interior shares more in common with the Renndienst

No, there isn’t a single captain’s chair in the front. I’ll eat a sock if that design choice ever gets put in a production car. But the Buzz does feature a highly adjustable cabin. The front seats can swivel around to face the rear passengers, just like in the Renndienst, and on top of that, every row can be adjusted or folded to make more cargo space.

The Renndienst is creative, and the Bus is groovy, but put them together and you get a passenger van that’s sure to be all the Buzz… pun absolutely intended.

Autotempest is a classifieds aggregator for used cars. It sweeps eBay, Cars.com, Craigslist, and others, and collects all cars in one easy-to-navigate interface. Recent searches produce some interesting prospects, especially classics from the 1990s, including some V12s and one rare exotic that barely breaches affordability. These are a few 1990s cars on Autotempest that were too interesting to ignore.

Executive: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC – $10,000

A rare 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC coupe is first off the line and one of a few on Autotempest, and it’s for sale from Hemmings. The exterior is blue-black metallic, with a few slight idiosyncrasies and headlight wipers. A 5.5-liter V8 lies under the hood that sends 238 horsepower to the rear wheels, with just 164,492 miles on the odometer. North American 560SECs only came with 4-speed automatic transmissions. Few coupes were made, compared to the sedan’s production numbers, and although it’s not an AMG, the engine is all-aluminum and produces 287 lb-ft of torque.

Other noteworthy features include aluminum wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a fully independent suspension, and no rust visible. The mileage is relatively low for this near-perfect 1990s German classic.

Used Luxury: 1997 Bentley Turbo R – $15,100

Autotempest showed eBay just closed an auction for a 1997 Bentley Turbo R at $15,100. This particular specimen was painted green with a beige interior, and in almost immaculate condition save for its glaring “Salvage” title. 1997 Bentley Turbo Rs used a turbocharged 6.8-liter V8 for 296 horsepower. It had rear-wheel drive, weighed 5,401 pounds, and topped out at 150 mph. Like the Mercedes, it had only a four-speed automatic transmission. It also used a double-wishbone front suspension and seated five people comfortably.

Bentley Turbo Rs can be expensive to restore. Unfortunately, the R was the weakest in a short line of engine options, ending with the Turbo RT Mulliner which produced 420 horsepower. Either way, a Bentley Turbo R for $15,000 is still one of the coolest 1990s cars. Although this one is sold, Autotempest has a few more Bentleys to choose from.

Autotempest Exotic: 1995 Ferrari 456GT – $69,500

Ferrari Logo on Red Background | Robert Alexander/Getty Images

Hemmings currently has a beautiful Rosso Monza 1995 Ferrari 456GT with a black interior for sale at $69,500. With 41,116 miles and a clean title, the 456GT provides ample prestige at the same price as a new BMW M3. The 456GT uses a 5.5-liter V12, which sends 426 horsepower to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

With a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds as tested by Car and Driver, it’s plenty fast. Of course, the 456GT isn’t the fastest Ferrari of the 1990s thanks to the F40. However, it’s an affordable exotic which is hard to argue with and grants a foot in the door to one of the most exclusive automakers on the planet. This one might not be on Autotempest for long.

The scale of used cars available in North America is vast. Autotempest alone has Alfa Romeos, old Jaguars, and even Lancias for sale just in California. If in the market for either a used commuter, sports car, or exotic car, the options aren’t nearly as limited as they might seem.

The Chevy Bolt is a great EV option today, but it’s getting even better soon. The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle) is a bigger and improved version of the regular Bolt, and that’s not the only thing it has going for it. Here’s a look at the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and how Disney is giving the Bolt EUV a boost.

What’s known about the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV so far

The Chevy Bolt EUV racing a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter | Chevrolet Pressroom

At a starting price tag of just under $34,000, the Bolt EUV is pretty competitive in the electric SUV segment. For example, the Ford Mustang Mach-E costs about $43,000. That said, the Bolt EUV, like other Chevy EVs, no longer qualifies for the federal EV tax credits. Regardless, $34,000 is a very affordable EV option for many families.

As far as the interior goes, while the Bolt EUV is bigger than the regular Bolt, it’s still a subcompact crossover. It has a cargo capacity of about 16.3 cubic feet without folding the rear seats, and that’s not a huge amount of space. However, it has a 10.2-inch touch screen display, and it includes many standard smart safety features.

The Bolt EUV is also the first Chevy to have access to GM’s Super Cruise package. This driver-assistance package will give the Bolt EUV something similar to what Tesla models have as far as semi-autonomous driving goes. When it comes to its powertrain, though, the Bolt EUV is pretty average. Its electric motor produces 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, and it gets about 247 miles of range.

Disney sprinkles some magic on the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV

According to GM, to promote the Bolt EUV, Chevy collaborated with Disney to make the Magic is Electric commercial. Chevy shot parts of that commercial at Disney World, including scenes in the EPCOT Disney park. This collaboration makes a lot of sense since EPCOT is supposed to be a vision of tomorrow, and EVs like the Bolt EUV are thought to be the cars of tomorrow.

On top of that, the commercial uses a lot of Disney magic. A lot of famous Disney characters, such as Dumbo and Tinkerbell, show up in that commercial. However, that commercial wasn’t just about Disney, as Chevy took the time to show off some of the Bolt EUV’s new features, including the previously mentioned Super Cruise.

In addition to the Magic is Electric commercial, Chevy posted a 14-minute-long behind-the-scenes video showing off how this collaboration was created. However, as GM stated, this wasn’t the first time Disney collaborated with General Motors, and it won’t be the last.

A comparison between the two new Bolts

Since the Bolt EUV is the bigger car, it has some natural drawbacks compared to the regular Bolt. For example, the Bolt EUV should cost about $2,000 more than the regular Bolt. Furthermore, since the Bolt EUV’s powertrain is very similar to the regular Bolt’s, its extra size ends up costing a few miles of range. The Bolt gets about 259 miles on a single charge, while the Bolt EUV only gets 247 miles.

Furthermore, while the Bolt EUV is the bigger car, it actually has slightly less cargo capacity. The Bolt EV gets about 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space without folding its seats down. This is about half an inch more than what the Bolt EUV gets. That said, this disparity is due to the Bolt EUV having more passenger space than the Bolt EV does.

There are plenty of complaints from auto enthusiasts about why electric cars will never surpass good ol’ gasoline. Though some of those myths have already been debunked. For starters, electric cars perform better than gasoline thanks to their instant torque. And there’s no denying that EVs are cleaner. But Ford is offering a solution for the die-hard fuel fanatic: a gas-scented fragrance based on the Mustang Mach-E called the Mach-Eau.

Ford Mach-Eau Fragrance | Ford

Mach-Eau: the smell of gas in your gasless car

Literally translating to Mach-Water, the Mach-Eau fragrance debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as a replacement for the smell of gas. Created by Pia Long of Olfiction, a renowned fragrance company (that we hadn’t heard of either), it isn’t just the smell of gas. According to Ford, Mach-Eau is designed to “please the nose of any wearer.”

Pia started by sniffing vehicles, blending that new car smell with the fumes from fuels, before looking to the chemical compounds of car smells. Benzaldehyde gives off the “almond-like scent” of a car’s interior, and para-cresol is what makes tires smell like tires. Other ingredients, such as blue ginger, lavender, geranium and sandalwood, were all thrown into the mix, as well as “an animal element.” We’re fairly certain they mean horse, after all, it is a Mustang.

But why make a fuel-scented fragrance?

But what’s the point of making an automotive aroma? For starters, Ford released a poll asking consumers what the biggest complaints of electric cars would be. According to Ford, 24% of people said they’d miss the performance of gas-powered cars. And plenty of people find certain electric cars to be uninspiring and unexciting.

But the study also found that a whopping 70% of participants would miss the smell of gasoline (and if I’d taken the survey, I would’ve said the same). In fact, the scent ranked more popular and pleasant than the smell of wine and cheese, right up there with that new book smell. So why’d they make an automotive fragrance? Because the majority of people love the smell!

The Mach-Eau is just one of the amenities that comes with the Ford Mach-E

Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford Mustang Mach-E | Ford

Much to my dismay, you can’t walk into a Ford dealership and buy the fragrance, you have to buy a Mustang Mach-E. That makes this a $42,000 smell ($35,000 after tax credits). But you also get an electric car loaded with fancy features.

Contrary to the beliefs of electric car nay-sayers, the Mach-E performs just as well, if not better, than most gasoline cars. It’s got a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds in the base model, thanks to the 266 hp motor, and 3.5 seconds in the upper-level GT with 480 hp. It also can go up to 305 miles per charge if you select the California Route 1 package.

Other nifty features include optional BlueCruise, a Level 2 Autonomous Driving system. In essence, the driver can take their hands off the wheel but still needs to keep their eyes on the road. But even without the self-driving system, you can still get adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist as standard on even the base model.

So, if you’re driven by nostalgia and yearn for the old days, where gas was cheap and guzzling it was okay, this fragrance will help you reminisce. But if I were you, I’d get the Mach-E regardless of scent.
