Car sales have been facing some of the toughest conditions in recent memory lately, thanks to supply shortages caused by the pandemic. While manufacturers have struggled to produce new vehicles, used car sales have gone through the roof. Given these factors, manufacturers have canceled some of their less popular models.

Car and Driver has laid out a list of the vehicles that have already been canceled in 2021. There are several different types of cars on the list, from economy cars all the way through to pricey SUVs. Here’s a look at the models on their way out.

Honda Clarity (PHEV and Fuel Cell)

The Honda Clarity had been struggling for a while, with its electric model retired in 2020. Now, in 2021, the plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell versions have also been canceled. If you really want to drive this car before it’s gone, it’ll be available as a lease through 2022, with Clarity Fuel Cell leases limited to California.

Hyundai Veloster

Unfortunately for those who are particularly budget-conscious, the compact Hyundai Veloster is soon to be no more. Just 2,205 Velosters were sold in the first six months of 2021, so it’s not totally surprising that Hyundai decided to cancel the regular Veloster. At least for now, though, the Veloster N will remain in production.

Mazda CX-3

A subcompact crossover, the Mazda CX-3 was never known for its ample cargo space. It also had some reputational challenges, even landing on Consumer Reports‘ dreaded ‘Used Cars to Avoid’ list at one point. It will now live vicariously through the CX-30, which was released in 2020 and offers more room for passengers and cargo.

Mazda6

The Mazda6 was a midsized family sedan that generally competed with the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. What this vehicle lacked in comparison with its competitors was a hybrid trim. The cancelation of the Mazda6 leaves the Mazda3 as the only sedan in the manufacturer’s lineup. However, this decision probably made business sense since the Mazda3 outsold the Mazda6 every year from 2005 through 2020.

Polestar 1

It’s not really a surprise that we have to bid farewell to the Polestar 1 this year. Produced by a partnership between Volvo and Greely, this stylish plug-in hybrid was always intended as a limited edition model. It’s kind of too bad, though, because this coupe has all the makings of a classic vehicle. While the price tag for this car was steep at $150,000, it could make for a good investment. Now that it’s being retired, that advice seems even more likely.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Speaking of investment vehicles, the Land Cruiser is another contender. Sales soared in early 2021 after its discontinuation in the U.S. was announced. For 70 years, the Land Cruiser has had a reputation as one of the best vehicles in the world for off-roading. Whether trekking through the desert or climbing the mountains, it always got drivers where they wanted to go.

Volvo V60 and V90

Like many station wagons, the Volvo V60 and V90 are now a thing of the past. It’s becoming harder and harder for wagons to compete with SUVs and crossovers, and unless you’re the Subaru Outback, breaking into what’s left of the wagon market can be a challenge. It’s too bad they were canceled, too, because we’ve praised these Volvo wagons in the past.

Volkswagen Passat

The Passat is another sedan that never really broke through in the U.S. market, dominated by the Accord and Sonata. Its bestselling year was all the way back in 2012 when it sold around 117,000 units– nowhere near the 480,000 units combined that the Accord and Sonata were racking up. If you’re a Passat fan and want to grab one up before they disappear, you might want to consider the Passat Limited Edition being put out to celebrate its end on the road. This Limited Edition model will honor the Passat’s U.S. manufacturing home city, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Camping connects you with nature and allows for a rejuvenating time away from the stress of everyday life. While there are many choices for getting to campsites, RVs and camper vans are longtime favorite vehicles. Places like Arizona provide beautiful backdrops for your retreat. When you want to plan a camping trip to take advantage of winter splendor, we’ve got three great destinations for boondocking in Arizona.

Chiricahua National Monument

According to Cruise America, if you’re a fan of cool rocks in nature, Chiricahua National Monument is called the “wonderland of rocks.” You’ll enjoy quite awesome views of towering rhyolite rock formations standing hundreds of feet tall. There are also all kinds of trails, bird watching areas, and historical sites to explore, which is 12,025 acres.

The National Park Service details what passes are accepted to camp here. Fees at the monument’s Bonita Canyon Campground run $20 per site, per night, and $10 per site, per night for accepted National Park Passes like the Golden Access Passport and others. You can camp with RVs or trailers that measure up to 29 feet and no more than 24 feet past the Bonita Canyon Campground.

There aren’t any water, sewer, or electrical connections, and ground fires aren’t allowed, though fire pits are allowed. When open, you can also take a tour of the Faraway Ranch Historic House. Self-guided tours are available now as the house undergoes renovations.

Scaddan Wash BLM Dispersed Camping Area

Quartzite, Arizona, has a great camping presence in the winter, according to Tough Top Awnings. The Scaddan Wash BLM Dispersed Camping Area is close to Interstate 10, so it’s a great option to set up camp or stop along the way to another destination for a few nights for some boondocking. The area hosts different events during the winter months as well that draw campers.

Reviews on Campendium talk about the great view of the stars at night and proximity to the nearby town where you can refuel and get water or liquid propane. RVshare mentions that you can also explore nearby old mining operations in Quartzite.

There aren’t any provisions for water, sewer, or electrical hookups on the campsite itself, nor can you dump water or waste. However, campers love that it’s no cost to stay on the grounds. In fact, you’re able to camp free for up to 14 days.

Patagonia Lake State Park

According to Cruise America, if you’re looking for an Arizona campsite with more amenities, Patagonia Lake State Park is it. Campers have access to a lakeside beach and marina with available boat rentals. RVs can also enjoy private picnic areas with barbeque grills and full hookups to utilities. Arizona State Parks outlines that there are 105 developed campsites like this, with varying maximum RV lengths. Most will accommodate any size, though.

For the full boondocking experience, there are also two non-electric campsites. Both have a picnic area, fire ring, grill, and ramada area for shade. There is also space to park two vehicles. Alternatively, there are eight cabins available at Patagonia State Park. They all have covered front porches with picnic areas and barbeques, gorgeous lake views, and parking for cars or RVs.

Additionally, there are public restrooms with showers and water dumping facilities, but they aren’t open at the moment due to coronavirus (COVID-19) precautions and needed maintenance. However, the park does have portable toilets available in these instances. Check with the park before your visit for the status of these amenities.

Vehicles for one to four adults pay a park entrance fee of $15 to $20. Campsite fees vary by campground site and location number, but prices are quite reasonable. Once all set up, you can enjoy camping for up to 14 consecutive nights.

There are so many automakers and subsidiary companies out there that it’s hard to keep up with who owns which car brands nowadays. Two common German names that often pop up in conversation are Mercedes-Benz, known for cars and camper vans, and Daimler.

They’re often mentioned together, so it makes you wonder if Daimler owns Mercedes-Benz. In fact, the two companies’ histories merge.

Did Daimler acquire Mercedes-Benz?

Daimler acquired Mercedes-Benz in 1926 after signing an agreement two years earlier for mutual interest between the two companies. However, it wasn’t known as Mercedes-Benz back when the two were competing with each other.

Inventor and engineer Karl Benz designed the first gas-powered automobile in 1886. At that time, though, the vehicle he produced was known as the Motorwagen. Financing it was his business partner at the time. His wife, also involved in it, was the first person to drive the Motorwagen a long distance, which garnered worldwide attention, Mercedes-Benz of Chandler explains.

Daimler Motors Corporation began marketing its own vehicle, the Mercedes, in 1901, becoming a rival of Motorwagen. But the 1920s brought hardships for the German economy, and both automotive rivals began merging to form a stronger company. And all vehicles they produced from then on were under the new Mercedes-Benz name.

Who’s in charge at Daimler, and what other companies does it own besides Mercedes-Benz?

Today, Swedish business executive Ola Källenius is CEO of Daimler Corporation and head of Mercedes-Benz. Daimler oversees the affairs of Mercedes-Benz, but it also owns other entities too.

According to Investopedia, Daimler acquired Freightliner in 1981. It now operates as Daimler Trucks North America LLC and is known mainly for producing heavy-duty Class 8 diesel trucks, aka semis. Daimler also took over Thomas Built Buses in 1998. This brand offers buses for schools, childcare, or any activity that needs large transportation.

In 2000, Daimler bought Detroit Diesel, which produces heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, axles, and other products for the trucking industry. You’ll also find the Daimler name with the Smart Automobile, making microcars and subcompact vehicles since 1998.

The last company under Daimler is Mercedes-Benz Bank, a subsidiary of the motor company. It was founded in 2001, obtained a license in 2002, and renamed in 2008 to provide auto financing and leasing.

Has the chip shortage affected the automaker?

Daimler’s stock is up 19% for the year as of this writing, but shares are beginning to drop. Sales in June fell despite a decent first half of 2021, Bloomberg reported. Officials at Daimler expect the chip shortage to hit sales hard in the second half of this year because the company doesn’t have reliable access to semiconductor chips.

Even the Mercedes-Benz division is affected by the shortage. Sales are not expected to progress for the remainder of this year. In April, officials had projected Mercedes-Benz would be more profitable than it had in the past few years. Still, analysts believe it’s trending downward due to lower unit sales and increased cost of raw materials.

Daimler, like other automakers, is resorting to prioritizing production for the moneymaking vehicles in its lineup to make the most of the limited chip supply. It’s also refraining from offering discounts on any of its vehicles, including luxury cars. Some automakers are expected to lose billions because of the chip shortage.

Daimler and Mercedes-Benz are doing what they can to produce vehicles despite the lack of semiconductor chips. It’s hoped chip access will return sooner than expected, and automakers can get production back to normal.

The Ford F-350 Super Duty truck is a purpose-built machine designed for heavy loads and hard work. However, some 2020-2021 F-350 Super Duty models are part of a recent recall issued by Ford Motor Company. These trucks are a common choice for those pulling a travel trailer or fifth-wheel RV. Here’s what you need to know about the recall.

What is the Ford F-350 Super Duty truck recall for?

According to RV Travel, the recall involves 2020-2021 F-350 Super Duty models equipped with the 6.7 liter diesel engine and Dana model 275 rear axles. Ford Motor Company issued the recall due to driveshaft problems. Trucks affected by these particular driveshaft problems may experience driveshaft separation.

The recall report informs the public that the rear axle housing might not be able to withstand the load of this large pickup truck. If the rear axle can’t support the truck’s weight, the housing may deform. This is what leads to driveshaft separation.

How many trucks are affected by the Ford Motor Company recall?

The Ford Motor Company recall includes a potential total of 27,604 affected pickup trucks. If you own a Ford F-350 Super Duty truck, the driveshaft problems could affect your vehicle. If you think that your truck might fall under this recall initiative, there are some steps owners can take toward amending or preventing the issue.

Driveshaft separation can lead to a loss of drive power or spontaneous vehicle movement when the truck is in park. So these driveshaft problems aren’t just potentially frustrating. The issues also have dangerous potential consequences, such as the increased risk of a crash.

What owners need to know if they think their F-350 Super Duty model is affected

Letters notifying owners of the recall should go out on August 16, 2021. In addition, Ford F-350 Super Duty truck owners can contact Ford Motor Company customer service. The number to contact this department is 1-866-436-7332. For reference, the number for this Ford Motor Company recall is 21S31.

If your truck falls under the recall, you may need to take it to the dealership for an inspection. Should the mechanic there find any problems with deformities of the axle housing, the housing will receive repairs as needed. Some 2020-2021 F-350 Super Duty models may even need a full replacement of the part.

What else can Ford F-350 Super Duty truck owners do about the Ford Motor Company recall?

For anyone that owns a 2020-2021 F-350 Super Duty model, there are other ways to look into the recall as well. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline. This hotline can be reached at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

Here, information is available for owners. In order to find out more, Ford F-350 Super Duty truck owners can use their vehicle identification number (VIN). If you find out your truck is part of the recall, the NHTSA Safety Hotline can help in terms of telling owners what to do next. Additionally, owners can learn more information about the recall.
