Buying a first car – especially for a young person – is a pretty big decision. This is doubly true these days as the car shortage has driven the supply of new cars into the dirt, while used cars and SUVs have skyrocketed in value. As SUVs have become one of the top coolest vehicle types, these cheapest and best SUVs might be a strong place to start looking for someone’s first car.

What is the best SUV for a first car?

Most of us have some pretty harrowing tales of our first cars. Broken bits and bobs scattered around a haggard cabin with every storage compartment filled with scratched CDs. Many people’s first cars require a bit of know-how to start and just the right touch to get the key out of the ignition. However, cars have come a long way in only the last 15 years.

This list of the best SUVs for a first car isn’t quite as old, and if they are well-bought, should be as haggard and jalopy-esq as the old days of 90s kids’ first cars. MotorTrend shows a decent variety of older and newer 4×4 SUVs that would make for a great first car for a teen or adult driver, alike.

The Isuzu Amigo is one of the best-used SUVs that are still affordable

We don’t see much from Isuzu these days, but back in the 90s, it made some pretty rad 4x4s. These trucks were never fancy, but they were tough, dependable, and looked pretty cool. As far as boxy 4x4s go, the Isuzu Amigo/Rodeo (after 2001 the name changed) was one of the best deals at the time for a tough off-roader that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.

While the first-gen (1989-1997) Amigos has some cool features like a partially removable roof and a solid rear axle, the second-gen (1998 to 2003) is the best of the line. These make the best SUVs for a first car list because they had badass features like a real all-iron Dana 44 rear axle, durable IFS front suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, an optional 3.2L V-6, and a comfortable interior with airbags. The Amigo is a perfect mix of on-road comfort, off-road capability, and modern amenities.

It’s hard to beat an old Jeep Cherokee

These have been peppering high school parking lots since the days of the Roman Empire. The XJ series Cherokee’s are similar to a Wrangler in that they are so simple and customizable that you can make a Cherokee whatever you want it to be.

While Cherokees are killer SUVs for a first car, the 1991-2001 models are among the best Jeep ever made. This year range offers one of the best drivetrains of all time, the 4.0-liter straight six also found in some Wranglers of the period. The underpinnings are also strong and begging for an off-road thrashing.

Don’t forget about the Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra is an interesting 4×4 SUV that never got the same love as the Jeeps and maybe that’s fair. However, The Xterra is actually very cool and would make for a great first car. If you’re looking for a great first used 4×4 SUV and need durability and survivability, but not fluff and amenities, then the first-gen 1999-2004 Nissan Xterra are a great option. In the U.S. market, you’ll find most with a 3.3L V-6 that made an adequate 170 hp, later bumped to 180 hp in the 2002-2004 models.

These Nissan 4x4s run around $10k-$11k in good shape with decent mileage. These bad boys were built for where the pavement ends. What’s even cooler is they can be found with cool optional extras like towing packages, grille guards, and they came in manual. That last fact alone is a great feature for a first car. Learning on a manual transmission forces new drivers to pay more attention.

The best SUV for a first car can be cheap

All of these cheap SUVs would make great first cars; they are simple, tough, reliable, practical, and inexpensive. Basically, any one of these three can be found in decent shape for less than $15,000. This is prime-time first car territory; not little to be unsafe, while still not being enough to worry about when it gets banged up. And most importantly, not too much money to feel bad about off-roading.

Studies continue to show that climate change plagues the world in more ways than one. A major effect is flooding. China is one of the most recent places to feel the pressure, but the Tesla Model 3 saved many drivers on the roads.

Floods have pounded China recently

The recent floods in China have been devastating. Rainwater pounded way at Xinxiang, dropping a year’s worth of rain in a mere 72 hours. If that’s not devastating enough, there might be more flooding to come.

One driver managed the floodwater just fine, however. Inside EVs reports that a Tesla Model 3 was spotted driving through floodwaters that covered the grille. The publication was unable to find out what condition the Model 3 is in now, but the fact that it could drive while other vehicles stalled is incredible.

Tesla models drive through deep water as part of their testing phase, so Tesla drivers can rest assured that navigating heavy rains won’t be an issue.

This doesn’t mean you can safely drive a Tesla Model 3 through floodwaters, of course. Though Tech Times reports the Model S can handle deep water, the Model 3 isn’t designed to. Even so, the Model 3 is an excellent EV.

For anyone looking for an affordable EV, it’s hard to beat the Tesla Model 3. In fact, a recent study from Consumer Reports shows that Model 3 drivers are some of the happiest car owners out there.

The standard Range Plus can go from 0 to 60 in a respectable 5.3 seconds and can reach speeds of 140 mph. The interior may seem a bit spartan at first, but there are enough features in there to give you plenty of room to stash your toys.

The level of comfort is also astonishing. The interior is made with vegan materials, so those who don’t like animal products will feel right at home. There is even the option to play games — when the car isn’t moving, of course.

Charging is effortless. One of the factors against electric vehicles is how long it takes to charge. Tesla has its own charging stations, which are very affordable. The Tesla Model 3 may not be perfect, but it’s got enough perks to make it worth the $39,990 sticker price.

Global warming is contributing to flooding

Sure, cars are excellent transportation, but gas guzzlers are contributing to global warming. Because of this, many scientists believe it’s contributing to flooding. Though more research needs to be done, the evidence shows that the increase in floods is due to climate change.

“Connecting climate change to floods can be a tricky endeavor. Not only do myriad weather- and human-related factors play into whether or not a flood occurs, but limited data on the floods of the past make it difficult to measure them against the climate-driven trends of floods today,” the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) says.

“However, as the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) noted in its special report on extremes, it is increasingly clear that climate change “has detectably influenced” several of the water-related variables that contribute to floods, such as rainfall and snowmelt.”

With that said, having a vehicle that can handle semi-deep water is a good idea. It’s not clear how well electric vehicles can do so, but one Tesla Model 3 handled floodwaters very well in China.

When it comes to Toyota models, most of them rank somewhere in the top half of their respective classes. In fact, most of them have high predicted reliability and owner satisfaction scores from Consumer Reports––but not all of them. When we sifted through the data, it became clear that 2021 Toyota models don’t make everyone happy.

In terms of consumer satisfaction scores, the vast majority of Toyota cars, SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks scored at least 4/5. However, some of them scored a bit lower. In fact, The 2021 Toyota C-HR is the least satisfying 2021 Toyota model. It is also the smallest Toyota SUV

Consumer Reports data shows a predicted consumer satisfaction rating of just 1/5 for the 2021 Toyota C-HR. While this car may get major points for style, it falls short of practicality. Owners aren’t pleased with the overall value, comfort, or driving experience of the 2021 Toyota C-HR. In other words, most C-HR owners aren’t planning on buying another one when it’s time to go car shopping again.

The C-HR is a crossover in Toyota’s ever-evolving crossover and SUV lineup. The base model is the 2021 Toyota C-HR LE trim, with a starting price of $21,595 according to Toyota. In the Consumer Reports review, CR notes its good fuel economy and long list of advanced standard safety features. However, the praises sung stop there. Slow acceleration and “horrendous visibility” are part of the issues that make up the long list of low points for the 2021 C-HR.

The Toyota Corolla, Toyota RAV4, and Toyota Tacoma are some of the brand’s top selling models in the US. That said, these models have lower consumer satisfaction ratings than any other 2021 Toyota models––except for the unfortunate C-HR. Here’s a breakdown of CR’s predicted owner satisfaction scores for these three popular models.

First up, the 2021 Toyota Corolla. This compact car is a beacon of practicality. Its low starting price and reputation for good reliability make it appealing to a wide range of buyers. In fact, CR ranks it No. 2 in its class. However, the 2021 Toyota Corolla also scored a 3/5 for predicted owner satisfaction from Consumer Reports.

In addition to that, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 also scored 3/5. If you want a RAV4 with higher ratings in this area, you may want to check out the RAV4 Prime model. This is the plug-in hybrid version of the popular crossover, and it scored a higher 4/5 predicted owner satisfaction rating.

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma also scored 3/5. Despite its obvious appeal as a small work truck or formidable off-roading companion, the 2021 Toyota Tacoma is showing its age. A primitive cabin experience and lackluster 2.7 liter four-cylinder base engine mean CR ratings don’t expect high long-term owner satisfaction.

How does Consumer Reports score for predicted owner satisfaction?

The whole package is taken into account for each CR rating. The review team considers factors from the driving experience, to the safety features, to the overall value. Owner feedback from past model years also plays a significant role in the scoring.

In addition to these important points, Consumer Reports does a survey to ask owners if they would repeat-buy the model they are in. The consumer satisfaction ratings reflect the percentage of buyers that are so in love with their 2021 Toyota models that they plan to buy another.

In short, the 2021 Toyota C-HR, 2021 Toyota Corolla, 2021 Toyota RAV4, and 2021 Toyota Tacoma are at the bottom of the barrel. When it comes down to whether owners are happy enough with their purchase that they’d do it all over again, none of these models––regardless of popularity––make the cut for Toyota’s most satisfying vehicles. These four are the least satisfying 2021 Toyota models according to Consumer Reports.

Toyota is a Japanese car company that’s done extremely well here in the states. Is Toyota a good car brand?

Overall, Toyota is a brand with storied reliability and a reputation for producing long-lasting vehicles. Additionally, owners are generally satisfied with their automotive purchases. According to a recent Consumer Reports study, a high number of Toyota owners say they would purchase the same model again.

Consumer Reports published data from owners of 13 2021 Toyota models included in the consumer satisfaction survey. The results gave Toyota a satisfaction rating of 71/100. This put Toyota in a top 10 position (out of 27 total brands) in terms of general owner satisfaction.

According to Good Car Bad Car, the most popular Toyota models are the Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma, and Toyota Highlander. However, these are not the most satisfying 2021 Toyota models. According to Consumer Reports predicted owner satisfaction ratings, there are two cars that have perfect scores.

The 2021 Toyota Avalon and the 2021 Toyota Prius are the most satisfying 2021 Toyota models. In addition to its 5/5 predicted owner satisfaction ratings, the 2021 Toyota Avalon scored an impeccable 93/100 in its road test and an average 3/5 predicted reliability rating. The 2021 Toyota Prius also scored 5/5 for predicted reliability. Additionally, it earned a decent road test score of 75/100.

How much is the 2021 Toyota Avalon?

The 2021 Toyota Avalon features eight different trim levels. Beginning with the base Avalon XLE which starts at $36,125, according to Toyota, the versions range all the way up to the 2021 Toyota Avalon Limited Hybrid. That range-topping unit has a starting MSRP of $43,400.

Hybrid models are available in the XLE, XSE, and Limited trims. In the gas powered models, the Avalon employs either a 2.5 liter 205 hp four-cylinder or 3.5 liter 301 hp V6 engine. The hybrid models combine an electric motor with the 2.5 liter four which achieves 215 hp.

The 2021 Toyota Avalon is number one in its class of large cars, according to Consumer Reports. If you are shopping for a new Avalon, it’s likely you’ll find the right model for your particular needs. However, Toyota just announced it’s killing the flagship sedan––despite a fabled legacy of luxury and high reported owner satisfaction ratings.

Not only is the 2021 Toyota Prius the most reliable Toyota model, but it’s also the most reliable brand new car according to Consumer Reports data. In addition, the latest Prius is one of the two most satisfying 2021 Toyota models. The Prius is historically hybrid, with a claim to fame as one of the first hybrid cars available to modern car buyers.

The 2021 Toyota Prius L Eco is the base model. Toyota offers this entry-level example starting at $24,525. There are six versions offered, according to Toyota’s website. The range-topping Limited trim starts at $32,820. All-wheel drive is now an option for the mid-range LE and XLE trims.

Most people like their Toyota models

The Avalon and Prius are the most satisfying 2021 Toyota models according to Consumer Reports. However, the data shows that owners of Toyotas are largely satisfied with their purchases. Other popular cars like the Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla scored 4/5 for predicted consumer satisfaction.

Toyota SUV and pickup truck owners are also happy according to the data. 2021 Toyota models like the Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Sequoia, and Toyota Land Cruiser also scored a 4/5 in terms of owner satisfaction. Due to the fact that crossovers like the three-row Toyota Highlander and all-new hybrid-only Toyota Venza scored 4/5 as well, it’s safe to say the majority of Toyota owners like their vehicles.

The Toyota Tundra scored 4/5, too, as well as sporty models like the Supra and the 86. In fact, it appears that most people like their Toyota cars. That said, according to Consumer Reports, both the Prius and the Avalon are the most satisfying 2021 Toyota models.
