You’ve probably seen videos of people stabbing cell phone batteries with a knife. First of all, don’t. Please, do not. Not smart. Second, that same principle can apply to electric vehicle batteries, making fires dangerous and hard to put out. Now, with the near-widespread acceptance of our EV future, it’s time to examine what causes these fires, as well as why they’re so difficult and dangerous to put out. Finally, we’ll look at the environmental impact of doing so.

Cell rupture and thermal runaway are key

An electric vehicle battery is made up of a few parts. First, there’s that hard metal shell you see above. Below that is where the batteries and the cooling systems are housed. Evidently, the inside of an electric vehicle battery is not somewhere you want things to get. This rupturing is the key to why the majority of EV fires start, as well as why they’re so hard to get out.

Usually, like your phone, an electric vehicle battery is made of a lithium-ion cell. Just like those videos of people puncturing phone batteries, the lithium in an EV like a Tesla reacts violently to air and water. Of course, by violently I mean explosively. Fortunately, this is a pretty rare occurrence. It takes a lot to puncture these cells, and vehicles nowadays often have additional protection to make sure that is never an issue- for you or the fire department.

Electric vehicle batteries can reignite

However, it’s this cellular structure that is both a benefit and a weakness. If a cell is punctured, odds are it’ll do something bad, be it igniting or failing. Of course, if one cell does happen to puncture, there can be a chain reaction. Cell after cell can puncture and burn, and it’s often hard to tell how severe that can be, per NBC. Moreover, it’s difficult to tell when the risk has passed. Slow leaks can cause flare-ups hours or even days later.

So, it’s not necessarily that electric vehicle batteries will just magically catch fire again. Rather, it’s that the chain reaction we’re talking about can often be slow, with cells rupturing and burning at different rates. That’s invariably the biggest danger here. It’s hard for firefighters to tell when fires are out, and once they’re out if they’ll come back.

Water usage is a serious concern

This leaves us with the environmental ramifications. Not only do we have raw lithium and other components making their way out into the world, but it takes an absurd amount of water to get them out. NBC says firefighters used 28,000 gallons to put out the fire that killed two driving a Tesla in April. Compare that with an average of 300 gallons for a petrol fire, and we’ve got a problem. We simply can’t go using that much water to fight fires in vehicles that are becoming more and more common on the road. For now, the best thing for first responders is training, and practices like Tesla’s first responder guidelines.

This is the business end of a SpaceX Super Heavy-Duty booster. For Elon Musk’s proposed 100-passenger spaceship, this will help propel it to Mars. Musk envisions colonizing Mars, which he says as humans we must do. Who are we to argue?

“This is the fastest path to a self-sustaining city on Mars,” Musk said in a 2019 webcast. Last Thursday, he tweeted this image of the Super Heavy’s engine display. The tweet said, “Completing feed system for 29 Raptor rocket engines on Super Heavy booster.”

It almost looks like some complicated car wheel. Until you see the technicians working on it. This was shot at SpaceX’s Boca Chica site in South Texas.

A follow-up tweet says, “And that’s just the primary fuel lines! The maze of secondary plumbing and wiring is our greatest concern.”

This image is the main stage of the two-stage SpaceX rocket

While this is only the main stage the upper stage of the rocket will be 165-feet high. So the total height is around 400 feet. The booster alone is 40 feet in diameter.

All of the engines themselves are powered by liquid methane and liquid oxygen. That upper stage will contain six Raptor engines according to space expert Mike Wall. So a total of 35 engines are part of this plan.

The first stage, seen here, will be needed just to get the spacecraft out of earth’s gravity. The upper stage will power the craft to Mars and back.

There have already been prototypes launched into space

Some prototypes have already been launched to test some of the components including a three-engine prototype that was launched 6.2 miles up last year. But soon SpaceX will launch a Super Heavy orbital test flight. That should happen before Christmas.

The plan for that launch is for the booster and upper stage called Starship to lift off together. The booster will eventually land somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. The upper stage will continue flying into orbit. It is expected to come down near Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands.

More flights are expected in 2022, with a fully up-and-running rocket launching in 2023. That is if preliminary tests go off without a hitch. The overall plan is to launch ten loads of 100 passengers up to Mars every year. Ultimately, the goal is for one million people to be living on the Red Planet within the next 50-100 years.

The city on Mars will develop organically

Right now there isn’t much of a plan for that city. It will develop over time based on discoveries there and inhabitants’ needs. With the reusable aspect of these rockets, Musk hopes the price for a trip to Mars will come down to a price that makes it possible for many to fly there.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has already booked a flight to the moon for 2023. The price tag for the round trip has not been made public. As for the price paid by Musk, he has said it will hover somewhere between two- and three billion dollars. However, you can be sure there is money to be made once Starship is up and running.

Selling your car can be very time-consuming and even a downright hassle at times. If you’re selling it to a private party, then you have to deal with vetting calls and low-ball offers. And if you sell it to a dealership, you will want to make sure that you’re getting the most money possible. But what if you could your car completely online without having to haggle or even leave your house? In that case, CarGurus has a solution.

The CarGurus Instant Cash Max Offer is an easy point-and-click affair

The CarGurus Instant Cash Offer | Joe Santos

Selling your car can be a pain if you’re planning to sell it to a dealership or used car dealer. When going this route, you’ll want to shop the car around to different places like traditional dealerships and Carmax in order to get the best offer possible. However, CarGurus recently rolled out its “Instant Cash Max Offer” program where private car sellers can get quotes from a “network of thousands of different dealerships” with a few simple clicks, according to the online classifieds site.

To see how easy it was, I decided to see what steps would be necessary if I wanted to sell my 2008 Honda S2000. After logging onto CarGuru’s “Sell My Car” page where sellers can find their instant cash offer, I was greeted with a series of fields to fill out about my car. After clicking “continue” at the end, I was greeted with an instant cash offer of $19,865 within seconds.

It’s not a bad offer and it seems competitive with other sites like Carmax and Carvana. However, I don’t plan on selling my car, but for anyone that is planning to sell theirs, the process is simple. After obtaining the offer, sellers will need to fill out their personal information including a pick-up spot and time for the car. When that date arrives, the vehicle will be picked up and a check will be given to the seller after a quick on-the-spot inspection. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Carvana has a similar process, except they don’t work with a network of dealerships like CarGurus does.

The cash offer works well for the dealerships involved

This online selling process isn’t just convenient for car sellers, it’s convenient for the participating dealerships as well. The dealerships currently involved in CarGuru’s Car Offer network can easily acquire cars to add to their current used-car inventories without having to work directly with the sellers. Instead, the vehicles are picked up via a “white glove” service, inspected, and then delivered to the dealer’s lot.

So far, the dealerships that are already involved in the process see it as an asset. Here’s one testimonial provided by CarGurus:

“Inventory acquisition is a major priority at Archibald’s and we often look for ways beyond auctions or trade-ins to purchase vehicles, and that includes searching for consumers who may not immediately come to us to buy a car,” said Danny Archibald, Owner of Archibald’s. “CarGurus’ large shopper audience coupled with this latest offering should increase both the quantity and types of inventory coming through our dealership, and we’re excited to see how it can work for our business.”

Whether you’re a seller or dealership, CarGurus makes buying and selling easy

Ultimately, CarGuru’s Instant Cash Max Offer makes selling your car a breeze. The only unfortunate part is that the service is only offered in the Florida, Massachusetts, and Texas areas. So if you don’t live in one of those states, you’ll have to wait. But at least it’s better than vetting phone calls or getting offers from different dealerships.

If you need a little extra space, then the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is an excellent option to consider. The Volkswagen Tiguan can deliver a few incredibly important features that drivers should be aware of while shopping.

Is the 2021 Volkwagen Tiguan a good SUV?

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan | Volkswagen

Yes, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is a great SUV to consider. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing the VW Tiguan SEL model for an entire week. I named this sleek SUV Tiger because it’s sleek, capable, and efficient.

The VW Tiguan begins at about $25,245. Moving up in trim levels to the SEL increases the price to about $32,000. It includes goodies such as V-Tex Letherette seats, a power liftgate, four-wheel independent suspension, and adaptive cruise control. It also checks three crucial boxes.

1. The Tiguan is fun to drive

The 2021 VW Tiguan comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that pumps out 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. 184 hp may sound low, but the Tiguan can get after it. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.2 seconds. This is the perfect amount of power for merging into traffic or passing others.

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan does have automatic start and stop technology, but it doesn’t have a delay. When the engine shuts off at red lights, it quickly fires right back up once you hit the acceleration to get off the line.

There is a limited amount of body roll around curves with responses and sporty handling. The braking feels stable and confident. I’ve been traveling around mountain roads and wish I had a model with all-wheel drive to test on light off-roading trails.

2. The Volkswagen Tiguan’s interior is outstanding

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL is incredibly comfortable with an upscale, luxury feeling. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is a nice touch, and it’s heated. The faux-leather seats are plush and supportive for longer rides. You can adjust the driver’s seat to fit your personal lumbar support needs.

Beautiful soft-touch materials with chrome accents line the dash. Plus, the large panoramic sunroof includes a powered cover. You can open the cover all the way, or halfway, allowing you to control how much light enters the cabin.

The VW Tiguan rides on 19-inch wheels that provide a smooth ride. The cabin is relatively quiet until you reach highway speeds. Aside from an occasional engine roar, the ride is pretty relaxing and engaging.

3. The VW Tiguan is spacious

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is larger than expected on the inside. There are deep door pockets, ample glove box space, and a deep center console for organizing your belongings. There is also a sizable tray in the dash.

With the Tiguan, you get between 12 to 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 73.5 cubic feet total. Every time I’ve opened the liftgate, people have been surprised by the massive trunk area.

The SEL is available with or without the third row. It’s important to note that the third row is for small children only. The VW Tiguan feels more useful with the third row folded flat. My week with this SUV is still going, so I’ll keep you updated as I learn more about its pros and cons.
