The Ford Bronco is on a hot streak across the board right now. Whether you want a brand-new 2021 Ford Bronco or a vintage Ford Bronco, you might have an equally difficult time getting your hands on either. The price of a vintage Bronco has shot through the roof. Don’t overpay for a vintage 4×4 box when there are so many other even cooler options for a fraction of the price, like the Jeepster Commando. Let me give a few reasons to choose the Jeepster Commando over a vintage Ford Bronco.

Vintage Jeepster Commando | Craigslist

The Jeepster Commando is cooler than a vintage Bronco

The Jeepster Commando is one of the few vintage 4x4s that has managed to slip by undetected by the ever-watchful eyes of people foaming at the mouth to way overspend on old 4x4s. The Jeepster is a rare bird. In fact, according to MotorTrend, AMC only made the C-104 Commando for two years (1972-1973), making it far rarer than any overpriced vintage Ford Bronco.

Just because it’s a bit more obscure doesn’t mean it sucks. AMC gave many of the best bits from the CJ Jeeps to the Jeepsters. So, the Jeepster has solid parts and off-road chops; it looks very cool and is pretty rare. If this isn’t the boxy 4×4 to buy, I don’t know what is.

Jeepster Commando prices are still living in this world

MotorTrend found an actual classified listing for a crusty 1972 Jeepster Commando barn find, asking $6,500. Admittedly this listing feels a bit high for the “as is” condition of the Commando. But even an overpriced version makes for a screaming impossibly good deal if it were a Bronco from the same year. Let’s take a closer look at the listing. The seller writes this about the Commando:

“True barn find! 1972 Jeep Commando C-104. One-family-owned since new. Only 71k miles! Speedo still works fine. When the old gentleman passed, it went to his nephew, whom I purchased it from directly. He got the brakes working, the fuel tank cleaned, and so on. It cranks right up, runs, drives, and stops. It needs mufflers! Here’s the good part: It’s the 304ci V-8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. It’s 4×4 with the original Warn lockout hubs. Typical rust spots on an original Jeepster 50 yrs old. The main rust is on the tailgate. And there is some on the removable steel hardtop, as well. But there are reproduction tailgates available that are much thicker & stronger than the originals. Most restorers prefer to go that route. The engine seems to have a slight miss. And I can hear a vacuum leak, too. Sold as-is. Asking $6,500” (Photos of the listing here)

There is something familiar about the front end of the Jeepster

As MT keenly points out, the front end of the Jeepster commando (mainly the grille) and vintage Broncos are undeniably similar. If you look at just the grille of the Commando, it’s easy to imagine a blue oval. AMC stretched the front end to make room for the V8 that would replace the Buick-sourced inline-six.

The Jeepster can also remove its doors and top – kind of

One of the major perks of a vintage Ford Bronco is that the roof and doors can easily come off to make a Jeep-like off-roader. But the Jeepster can pull that trick too, sort of. The doors do come off, but they don’t do so nearly as easily as the CJs or Bronco. However, the Jeepster has a far more rigid body tub than the Bronco, meaning that once the doors are off, the Jeepster is way more stable. The Broncos get a little floppy with the roof and doors off.

Overall, the Jeepster is at least as good as a vintage Ford Bronco

According to MotorTrend, the 304 V8 gives the Jeepster Commando plenty of torquey power that keeps the Bronco alternative spritely and fun. The transmission is also a beast. MT believes that the powertrain for the Commando is better overall than the same year Broncos.

Overall, the Jeepster Commando is cool, rare, well-built, and so much cheaper than the vintage Ford Broncos that it is honestly such a no-brainer. If you want a cool vintage 4×4 and you don’t go with a Jeepster over a massively inflated vintage Ford Bronco, it feels like money down the drain at this point.

There’s plenty to consider when shopping for family vehicles. And like families, vehicles come in many sizes. They also offer varying levels of safety, technology, and sustainability. The 2021 Mazda3 might not be the first car you’d consider a family hauler. But maybe it should be. Here’s why.

Good Housekeeping’s ‘Best New Family Cars of 2021’

2020 Mazda3 sedan | Mazda North American Operations

Through a collaboration with Car and Driver, Good Housekeeping has published a list of the best new family cars for the past six years. So if you’re shopping for a new vehicle for your family, the research has mostly been done for you.

Parenting experts and automotive industry experts have determined the best vehicle for every type of family. Each year, testers evaluate hundreds of new vehicles on more than 5,000 miles of road, from crowded city streets to winding country roads. They also install more than 100 child safety seats and pair smartphones with infotainment systems.

In addition, consumer testers and engineers use a formula to determine the best family vehicles. Each model must drive well and offer a certain level of safety. The vehicle should also offer a smooth, balanced ride with minimal noise. And all vehicles must have received strong rankings from Car and Driver.

Comfort and convenience are also important in the evaluation. The vehicles must have a good amount of storage space for their size. Installing and adjusting car seats must be easy to manage, too. And if the infotainment system offers voice commands, they must be accurate.

Other factors include little extras that make a car more accessible and practical. They include smart storage spaces in the cabin, USB charging ports, climate control systems, and more. Last, reviewers consider each vehicle’s fuel efficiency and overall value because most families appreciate a good value.

The Mazda3 won in the Best Compact Sedan category

Good Housekeeping named the 2021 Mazda3 the best compact sedan among 18 vehicles for families. The team loved its upscale vibe at a reasonable price, starting at only $20,650. Small but sporty, the Mazda3 offers an energetic ride with precise steering no matter the trim level. It also earned top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In addition, the 2021 Mazda3 offers a user-friendly infotainment system featuring a rotary knob for ease of use. It also comes with plentiful advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning.

Plus, seven optional packages allow buyers to customize the Mazda3 for their family. However, you’ll have to pay extra for higher trims that offer features such as power-adjustable seats, a head-up display, and all-wheel drive.

Aside from the up-charges for extras, the only other drawbacks are that the Mazda3 could use more cargo space and rear legroom.

The 2021 Mazda3 is also fun to drive

The Mazda3 offers an attractive balance between luxury and mainstream. You can get the popular, functional hatchback and add luxury with either the Premium or Premium Plus models. And you can get all-wheel drive and choose from three four-cylinder engines.

The Mazda3’s spirited drive makes it one of the most athletic compact cars. Considering that on top of the driver assists, excellent safety ratings, and better-than-average infotainment system, you realize how much value this car offers for the price. And if you have the budget and want even more luxury, it’s available.

In 2021, the 3’s lineup got two new engines, including a 2.5-liter turbo-four on the top trims. There’s also a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder offered with the base model. There was minor equipment shuffling among the trims, but not much else changed since last year.

With a ride that’s composed yet dynamic, the Mazda3 is refined and fun to drive. Sure, it’s a compact car, but it could be the perfect family vehicle for the right family.

Kia produces some of the best cars on the road. The automaker is also competitive in terms of EVs. And as far as the all-electric SUV segment goes, Kia has the Niro EV, an excellent electric crossover. Although it didn’t win the 2021 Car and Driver EV of the Year award, you still shouldn’t sleep on the 2021 Kia Niro EV.

The 2021 Kia Niro EV is a contender

2021 Kia Niro EV | Kia

Car and Driver thoroughly tested 11 EVs for three weeks for its EV of the Year contest. The automotive site ultimately declared the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E the best EV. Car and Driver gave a few reasons for that, but the main takeaway is that the Mustang Mach-E won for what it can do. Sure, its numbers aren’t spectacular, but it can convert “EV skeptics to EV evangelists,” C/D says.

So that’s a high bar for the Kia Niro EV to beat. Regardless, Car and Driver gave the Niro EV high praise. C/D called the Niro “the sleeper” — an overlooked but great car.

Why does Car and Driver think the 2021 Kia Niro EV is a sleeper?

One of the obvious reasons why consumers might overlook the Kia Niro EV is its looks. According to Car and Driver, the Niro “reinforces some negative stereotypes about electric cars.” This is because it doesn’t look sleek on the outside or the inside. Add in its $40,000 price, and the Niro EV might turn off many customers.

Still, customers shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The Niro’s electric powertrain, which doesn’t reinforce negative stereotypes about EVs, impressed C/D. Its electric motor produces 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque, allowing this compact crossover to go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

Not only that, but its 64-kWh battery gives it some great range. Car and Driver said that even with the Niro going 75 mph on the highway, it still had a range of about 210 miles. However, driving at slower speeds will give this crossover even better range. The Niro has an EPA-estimated 239-mile range, but other reviewers have gotten 285 miles on a full charge.

On top of that, Car and Driver liked the Niro’s handling and infotainment system. So even though this EV doesn’t look flashy, it’s “more capable than it appears.”

Other contenders in the EV of the Year contest

Car and Driver tested almost a dozen EVs, including three Tesla models. The Model 3 and Model S both earned good reviews, but both fell short in one way or another. The 2021 Model Y also fell short, with Car and Driver simply saying it was worse than the Model 3.

C/D also tested a few other popular EVs, including the Nissan Leaf and Audi e-tron. Nissan designed the Leaf to be an affordable EV, and it has succeeded in that regard. However, the Leaf isn’t much else compared to other EVs. And the e-tron, though expensive, is a relatively quick EV both on the road and at the charging station.

Jeep is well-known for many things, such as creating some of the best off-road cars. The brand has also won the title of America’s “Most Patriotic Brand” for 2021 and many years before. Here’s a look at how Jeep rightfully earned that award.

Jeep has been America’s ‘Most Patriotic Brand’ for 19 years now

According to Stellantis, Jeep has been named America’s “Most Patriotic Brand” 19 years in a row. This wasn’t a small survey either. Stellantis wrote that Brand Keys, the company which ran the survey, asked almost 6,000 Americans from all across the U.S. how patriotic they thought a brand was. Those Americans looked at almost 1,200 brands, and the ultimate winner was Jeep.

The survey found some unsurprising results in terms of the top 10. According to MediaPost, Walmart was the second “Most Patriotic Brand,” while Disney came in at third. Fourth place was a tie between Amazon and Ford, and fifth place went to The New York Times. Tesla was the next automaker that made that list, coming in 30th.

This domination by Jeep shouldn’t be too surprising. The brand has a long history that’s heavily tied to America and America’s military.

Jeep’s long patriotic history

As Stellantis wrote, Jeep has been involved with the U.S. military for a long time. In the past, America’s finest rode on Jeeps to defeat the Nazis, but this brand’s involvement with the military didn’t stop there. It has also been heavily involved with the USO. Stellantis wrote that Jeep would donate $250 to the USO every time someone buys a 2021 Freedom edition to show just how much the brand supports the USO.

Jeep also has a long history of supporting American veterans when they’ve come home. Not only do the Freedom editions have military-themed interiors and exteriors, but many veterans can also get a discount. According to Stellantis, “all active and recently retired service members” can get $500 in cash to buy a Jeep 4×4.

Jeep has been an American company that made cars in America for much of its history. While that’s no longer entirely true, its patriotic actions still allowed the brand to win the “Most Patriotic Brand” award.

Embracing the future of America

Many automakers have started creating a green lineup, and Jeep is doing the same with its iconic models. The Wrangler 4xe is the brand’s latest eco-friendly offering for Jeep fans. The 4xe is a hybrid, like many other eco-friendly options, but it doesn’t stop there.

The brand recently unveiled a new concept of the Wrangler, the Wrangler Magneto. It’s just a concept car right now, so it’ll be a while before production begins. The Wrangler Magneto will be a true EV Wrangler. However, its details and specs aren’t necessarily going to be what is eventually put on the production lines since it’s still a concept.

Jeep did make it clear that the Magneto will still be able to keep up with other Wranglers. Its electric motors should allow it to be as capable as the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine that it currently has. However, it’s currently unknown what kind of range the Magneto will have.
