Announced back in 2020, the Honda E made waves in Europe as a small electric car. It would be a fun grocery-getter, a cute solution to the climate problem. But much to the dismay of American buyers, this spunky little EV won’t be coming to the states. The closest we’ve got is the Kandi K23, a small, cheap, Chinese electric car with some key advantages and significant drawbacks.

The Kandi K23 | Kandi America

The Kandi K23 is small and cheap electric car

The two defining characteristics of the Kandi K23 are its size and its price tag. The wheelbase is 104 inches, 6 inches longer than the Honda E, both the K23 and the E have room for 4 passengers. The difference lies in the price. Starting at $28,000 before tax incentives, the K23 is one of the cheapest EVs on sale for the states. In comparison, the Honda E starts at $38,000. Granted, the K23 is cheap for a reason.

Under the hood, the K23 has a 49kw (that’s 65 hp) electric motor that can get you to a top speed of 72mph. Its EPA-rated range is just 113 miles. And while it does have a 10-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, and Bluetooth, that’s about all it has.

The Kandi K23 is a bare-bones electric car, whereas the Honda E features some nifty features, like a panoramic touchscreen with an “aquarium mode” so you can keep a digital fish on your dash. And that extra 10k gets you 25 more miles of range, a 90mph top speed, and above all else, the Honda nameplate.

Kandi’s reputation isn’t all that great

Unlike Honda, who’ve been selling motorbikes in America since 1949 and cars since 1969, Kandi is just breaking in. And they haven’t necessarily done a great job with that. For starters, there are questions as to whether or not the cars are safe.

Kandi has been making cars in China since 2007, and claims to have been certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only issue? There have been no NHTSA crash tests for the K23, nor are there any record of the car being tested in China. Kandi’s sales aren’t all accurate either, with 60% of the cars being sold to companies Kandi owns.

It’s unsure as to whether or not the Kandi cooperation will really establish itself in North America, their Kei car-based EVs may completely fall flat. But what about small, cutesy electric cars in general?

Will a small Honda E equivalent ever come to the states?

The somewhat unfortunate truth is that Americans buy bigger cars. There’s nothing wrong with that in principle, but if automakers wish to compete in one of the largest economies, they have to conform. Honda is doing just that by selling their small EV in places where small cars make sense. Europe’s roads aren’t as wide, and people driving large SUVs look rather outlandish. The same goes for people driving Smart cars in the states, you look and laugh a little.

But that isn’t to say all automakers have given up hope. Chevy is still committed to a smaller EV for the states with the Bolt, and Nissan still sells the Leaf. Neither are particularly sporty, but their designs are easier on the eyes. And they’re simple, small, and cheap in a sea of pricey SUVs. In other words, they might not be mainstream, but small electric cars out there.

Today’s vehicle models have come a long way in terms of car safety. The seatbelts and airbags are important, but driving is a far safer activity because of groundbreaking technology, such as the backup camera.

Many models come equipped with backup cameras. Once you have one, it’s hard to imagine life without them. But does having rear visibility through a camera really prevent accidents?

The safety metrics for backup cameras

There are clearly several advantages of buying a car equipped with a backup camera. As shared by Edmunds, obvious safety benefits include providing a broader field of vision for accident avoidance, eyes beyond the rear window, and trunk level will eliminate trunk-level blind spots.

Rearview cameras are game-changers for those routinely trying to park in tight spaces. With the audible warning alerts and on-screen guidelines, parallel parking is a breeze. The backup camera takes the guesswork out for anyone towing a trailer.

The metrics are coming in regarding the safety benefits of having backup cameras in today’s vehicles. Cover shared some of the data collected by the Insurance Information Institute, reviewing crash analytics across 22 states. Collisions were cut by 16 percent for those models equipped with backup cameras, supporting the theory that people are less likely to reverse into obstacles using those cameras. The instances of death associated with cars in reverse also dropped between 2008 and 2011, from 274 to 189. Overall injury numbers also fell by about 1,000 instances within that same timeframe.

Continued risks and setbacks

Much like the existence of side mirrors, the backup camera is only helpful if you actually use it. Rear cameras are merely tools to help with visibility, not a guarantee of car safety. Studies even suggest that nearly 20% of drivers don’t always look at rearview screens when in reverse, relying solely on warning tones.

Another setback with the use of backup cameras involves the misconception that visibility eliminates accidents. Incidents in reverse still happen and result in 210 fatalities every year, 31% of which represent children under five. These incidents point to backup cameras not showing certain areas behind the vehicle, and they don’t provide a wide enough view below the trunk.

Some of the best backup cameras are in these cars

If your current vehicle doesn’t come with a backup camera, your next vehicle probably will. As of 2018, federal law requires all passenger vehicles, including trucks, vans, and cars, to come with backup monitoring technology. There are a host of aftermarket installs worth considering for consumers driving older models who want the tech.

Motor and Wheels put together a list of today’s vehicles that come with some of the best rearview camera technology. Toyota has a few contenders at the top of the list, including the Camry and Avalon. Also on this list is the Volkswagen Arteon, Lexus ES, Audi A6 Allroad, Acura TLX, and the Nissan Altima. This list also points out that in addition to these backup cams, these models come with a robust menu of driver assistance features, safety technology, and crash test endorsements from NHTSA and IIHS.

Ultimately, backup cameras reduce accidents and have become a mandatory car safety feature for new models. But don’t forget to use your camera when in reverse and never rely solely on the tech to avoid obstacles.

Determining which SUV is best can be a little subjective as different options fill a variety of needs. For example, the Jeep Renegade is probably too small for families, but it’s an excellent option for college kids. Also, the Jeep Gladiator might be a little too rugged to win luxury awards, but it’s incredibly capable.

But if you go based on which SUV has the most awards, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the best. It combines both luxury and ruggedness for comfort, style, and capabilities to provide the best of each world.

What awards did the Grand Cherokee win?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is awarded for its diverse powertrain lineup. There are four options to choose from with the 2021 model:

  • The 3.6-liter V6 is the base engine with 295 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.
  • You can upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8 engine for 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 6.4-liter V8 engine generates 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
  • Last but not least, the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 cranks out 707 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque.
  • The hybrid powertrain is coming with the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.

This amount of muscle provides the Grand Cherokee with best-in-class towing. When properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,200 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,380 lbs. Plus, trailering tech is included to make hauling cargo easier and safer.

Trailer sway control applies the brakes to minimize sway caused by the trailer. Hill Descent Control automatically detects steep hills and applies the brakes to allow drivers to control their speed while towing a loaded trailer safely. Also, the Hill Start Assist prevents rollback when starting on an incline.

The Grand Cherokee also features the best in class off-roading capabilities. There are multiple 4×4 systems and additional off-road features to craft the perfect adventuring machine. The Trailhawk has the Quadra-Drive II system, tow hooks, skid plates, and real-time performance information

Yachts come to mind when thinking of the lavish lifestyles of the rich and famous. Celebrities and other wealthy individuals have bought and enjoyed yachts for years, and that trend continues. One celebrity yacht, the Amphitrite, was owned by two different celebrities before being sold again in 2017.

Learn more about the previous owners of this superyacht, its features, and similar boats owned by other famous people.

J.K. Rowling bought a yacht once owned by Johnny Depp in 2016

What was once called the Vajoliroja, named by the owner Johnny Depp by blending his two children and his ex-wife’s names, became the Amphitrite before it was sold to a new owner in January 2016. According to The Drive, that new owner turned out to be the famed Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, who purchased the luxury ship from a businessman who then sold it to her for $28.9 million.

The Drive also reports that Depp had spent around $7 million renovating his ship in 2008. According to PopSugar, Rowling took the boat for a family vacation and fell in love with it enough to be interested in purchasing it. Amphitrite is a Greek sea goddess, and many speculate that Depp renamed the ship as a tribute to another ex-partner, Amber Heard.

Less than a year after purchasing the yacht, Rowling listed it for $19.2 million, almost $8 million less than she paid just months before. PopSugar also noted that the ship could have been rented for $130,000 per week instead of purchasing it outright.

The Amphitrite’s specs and features

According to Variety, the Amphitrite is a 156-foot Motoryacht that features five bedrooms, a home cinema, a salon, a state-of-the-art entertainment system, three decks, and plenty of outdoor seating space. The yacht was built in 2001, but it features plenty of unique and old-fashioned decor that makes it appear like it’s from a different era. Boat International reports that the yacht was designed by Tanju Kalaycioglu and was inspired by the 1930s.

28,000-liter fuel tanks power the yacht, and it can cruise at a speed of 12.5 knots. It has an estimated range of around 3,200 nautical miles. Plus, the yacht comes fitted with quantum zero-speed stabilizers for a smoother ride.

Other celebrity yachts

Depp and Rowling aren’t the only two celebrities that have delved into the world of yacht ownership. One of the most celebrity yachts, Venus, was purchased by the late Steve Jobs, but it wasn’t unveiled until a year after his death. It’s now owned and used by his family, and it is registered to George Town, Cayman Islands. Venus is a 256-foot yacht that was first launched in 2012, according to Boat International

Bill Gates also owns a yacht, the Sinot Aqua, and it’s completely hydrogen-powered. Hydrogen is cooled to -423 °F when it is in its liquid state, where it can be used to propel the ship. The only byproduct from this process is water, making it a zero-emission process. It has an estimated worth of $644 million.

Another yacht unlike any other is the Astoria, owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. This old-fashioned yacht was built in 1911 and had enough space to accommodate a 90-piece orchestra on its deck. When Gilmour purchased the yacht in 1986, he converted it to a recording studio, where the final three Pink Floyd albums were recorded. Boat International reports that these days, it sits anchored on the River Thames in Greater London.
