Gas prices are way up. Whether you drive cars, trucks, or SUVs, your day-to-day expenses just went up. It was an inevitable side-effect of the pandemic. As life slowed down, so did supply chains. Now, things are opening back up, and the supply chain simply cannot keep up with the rabid demand. We’ve seen this before with semiconductors, and now we’re seeing it with gasoline. Fortunately, there’s a few ways you can combat rising prices at the pump.

Gas rewards programs can cut gas prices

Personally, this is my pick for saving money as gas prices rise. There’s any number of programs you’re able to enroll in across the country. However, these things vary regionally in most instances, so be sure to ask around locally. For example, Kroger offers a great rewards program for gas. Basically, $1,000 in groceries saves you $1/gallon of gasoline. That may not sound like much, but even $0.33 off a gallon of premium gas will bring you back under $4.00 in most places.

It’s not just grocery stores that offer these programs either. Murphy’s, another local chain near me, offers a similar fuel rewards system. This time, things work a little differently, where the purchase of gasoline is turned into money off at a time of your choosing. Ideally, this is the kind of program you’ll want to aim for. In my experience, these points accumulate a little more quickly than the grocery ones do, but that could change if you have a large family.

Keep enough air in your tires

Now, this next piece of advice is a little more on the practical side as compared to a simple rewards system. Basically, it costs your car gasoline (or electricity) to move forward. It costs your car gasoline to move forward because your car weighs a lot. However, you can mitigate the energy needed for your car to move forward by properly airing up or down your tires.

Turns out some of that off-roader insight is useful on road. Effectively, your car’s ability to move can be aided by altering how much of your tire is touching the ground. Thankfully, those numbers can be found on the inside of your door sill, measured in Pounds per Square Inch of air pressure. Keeping those tires right on those PSI numbers can greatly improve your fuel economy, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

Stop using primo gasoline

Now, this last one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s something drivers have been cautioned against for generations. However, your car doesn’t always need that primo, USDA 91 octane gas. Engines nowadays are resilient enough to use lower octane gas without any damage. There’s a bit of a catch in that your car may feel a little down on power. But hey, if you’re saving gas who needs that extra power? With these strategies in mind, it should be easy to save a few bucks at the pump until this whole thing blows over.

It has been an interesting year for electric vehicles in the automotive industry. EV sales are up, and almost every automaker is electrifying its lineup. This phenomenon has led to the creation of some incredible EVs and some we could definitely live without. Palo Alto, California-based American automaker Tesla is leading the industry’s charge toward an electric future. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 have been selling well. Once the new hatchback arrives, it will completely overrun the Tesla Model X and Model S.

Tesla is many things but easily accessible is not one of them. For years the automaker seemed far removed from average middle-class drivers with its electric performance vehicles. Little did we know that the electric car and clean energy company was setting up a foundation for greatness with vehicles like the Tesla Roadster and Tesla Model S.

Tesla first made headlines for creating high-performance electric vehicles that rivaled and surpassed their gas-powered counterparts. The caveat was these vehicles were only available to the elite because of their high prices. After gaining media attention and piquing the interest of consumers, the automaker gradually made its vehicles more accessible to the general public.

The Tesla hatchback will be the best-selling electric car produced by the company yet for one simple reason: it’s affordable. The brand was once an exclusive club with a large temperamental bouncer. In the years to come everyone will be able to experience the company’s innovative EVs. All will soon be welcome to share in the experience of driving one of the most popular EV brand’s vehicles.

According to Electrek, The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 and currently the company’s most popular EVs. The Model Y and Model 3 both also happen to be the company’s most affordable EVs, starting at $39,990. The Model Y and Model 3 are popular for much more than just their price.

The Tesla Model Y is the company’s crossover option. SUVs and crossovers have become particularly popular over recent years. The Model Y is easily one of the most exciting electric crossovers on the market because of its price, range, and awesome exclusive features.

The Tesla Model 3 is a favorite amongst Tesla owners. The Model 3 offers great range on a full battery charge, decent torque, and fast charging. It is one of the best entry-level electric cars because of its comfortable interior, quiet cruising, and awesome special features. The Model Y and Model 3 are the two top-selling electric vehicles of the year thus far, and it’s no surprise why consumers are flocking to them.

Do the Model S and Model X have a chance against the new hatchback?

If the Tesla Inc. team’s goal is to be as inclusive as possible, then, unfortunately, the Model S and Model X will have to take a back seat to the upcoming hatchback. Why? It’s not like both models don’t have their fair share of cool features. The fact is, numbers don’t lie, and both the Model Y and Model 3 outsold the Model S and X by over 30,000 units.

The Tesla Model X starts at $79,990. The Model S starts at $69, 420. Considering that a large number of new EV purchases are from first-time EV buyers, $69,000+ is a lot of money to spend on a vehicle class that is frankly in its infancy. EVs are still fairly new to the industry and still being developed. Full battery ranges are increasing annually and some automakers are just starting to roll out EVs.

The Tesla hatchback will easily outsell its more expensive family members, the Model S and Model X, because it is a more affordable EV, thus making it the better entry-level EV. The Model 3 and Model Y are the top-selling electric vehicles because they provide great value, and most importantly, consumers can afford to try them. Skeptical consumers are much more likely to take a chance on an affordable EV than an expensive one. The Tesla hatchback is expected to release in 2023 with a starting price of $25,000. The most affordable Tesla ever will be the best entry-level Tesla on the market.

Some vintage cars, once lost, are never recovered. But occasionally, someone stumbles across and rescues a long-forgotten classic. Or, in the case of the ‘Lost Corvettes,’ classics. These vintage ‘Vettes have been sitting for decades, but are slowly being given away to new owners. And some of these owners got the keys at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show.

Peter Max’s 36 Lost Corvettes: a long tale of search, rescue, and restoration

A 1956 Chevrolet Corvette amongst several Lost Corvettes | Corvette Heroes

The story of the Lost Corvettes starts with a VH1 giveaway. To try and drum up viewership figures, VH1 decided to hold a Corvette giveaway in 1989. At the time, the ‘Vette had been in production for 36 years. So, the network decided to give away 36 Corvettes—minus the 1-of-1 1983 model.

When it was all over, Long Island, NY resident and carpenter Dennis Amodeo walked away as the winner. However, Amodeo didn’t have anywhere to put all these Corvettes. So, he sold them all as a lot to graphic artist Peter Max—which is where the story gets complicated.

Max split the ‘Vettes amongst several NYC garages, The Drive explains. But while he initially planned to repaint some of them, and even buy 14 more, he never followed through. Nor, in fact, did he do anything to or with these sports cars, Road & Track says. So, for 25 years, they rotted and gathered dust, and earned the nickname ‘the Lost Corvettes.’

Finally, in 2014 Max privately sold these Lost Corvettes to two New York real estate families, the Hellers and the Spindlers. They hired noted Corvette collector and restorer Chris Mazzilli to bring the cars back to their former glory. And afterward, they formed Corvette Heroes to give the ‘Vettes away as part of a new giveaway, Autoblog explains.

This Lost Corvettes giveaway is split up into several raffles, each benefitting a veteran-owned or veteran-themed organization. So far, two raffles have already taken place. And at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show, the winners of the third raffle got to pick up their new classic cars.

The Chicago Auto Show raffle saw six of the Lost Corvettes get new homes. And each of the winners was a veteran or came from a veteran family:

  • 1960 Corvette: Dave Wyckoff, Dunedin, FL (Father served in Marines and Air Force and received a Purple Heart; grandfather was a WWII Marine; mother worked at Clark Airbase Hospital)
  • 1961 Corvette: Adrian Madsen, Williamsburg, VA (Served in the Army for 30 years; grandfathers and father served in the military, too)
  • 1968 Corvette: Edward Rummel, Penn Runn, PA (Marine and Agent Orange victim; father served in WWII on the beaches of Normandy)
  • 1977 Corvette: Kevin Fitzpatrick, New York, NY (Father was in the Army; grandfather served in the National Guard and the Army in WWI under General Pershing)
  • 1978 Corvette: Ron Wilkerson, St. James, MO (Father served in the Army)
  • 1984 Corvette: David Parker, Glendale, CA (Father was a WWII Lt. Colonel; grandfather was a Colonel in WWI and WWII)

The third Lost Corvettes raffle also saw $250,000 go to Stand For The Troops. It’s a not-for-profit organization that offers aid to veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain juries, and other such “invisible wounds of war.”

There are still some lost-and-found ‘Vettes left

Although the 2021 Chicago Auto Show raffle was third, you still have a chance to win one of the Lost Corvettes. Corvette Heroes has two more raffles left to give away 14 cars. And while there’s no 1963 split-window Corvette left, there’s still a 1955 model. That’s the year the Corvette first offered a V8.

Tickets are up for sale on the Lost Corvettes’ website both individually and in bundles. But if you want that 1955 ‘Vette, it’s part of the fourth raffle, which ends on July 19, 2021. And the fifth and final raffle ends on September 20, 2021.

Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next person to give one of these Lost Corvettes a new home.
