Ultra-luxury automaker Rolls-Royce has confirmed it will pursue the development of electric vehicles. A trademark filed last year hinted at this future development. With a similar BMW model in development, enthusiasts can make some predictions about the mysterious Silent Shadow.

The first hint that an electric Rolls-Royce was on the way came in 2020. BMW, the parent company of Rolls-Royce, filed a trademark for the name Silent Shadow. The soundless moniker implies the new model will make no sound, something only possible with electric motors.

In May, the brand officially confirmed its intentions to enter the digital arena. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes told Bloomberg: “Electrification fits perfect with Rolls-Royce, it’s torquey, it’s super-silent. We are not known for roaring loud engines and exhaust noises whatsoever, and that is a big benefit.”

The recent announcement of the Dawn and Wraith’s discontinuation left a conspicuous hole in the Rolls-Royce lineup. Could the Silent Shadow move in to replace the brand’s two-door offerings? Electric cars can undoubtedly offer the acceleration and performance expected from a luxury coupe.

The BMW i7 gives clues about the Silent Shadow

Rolls-Royce has released few details about the Silent Shadow, but another model provides some insight. The brand’s first dedicated all-electric model will be developed alongside the BMW i7

Stats for the BMW i7 provide some baselines for what the Silver Shadow should be able to do. The new model will be built on a Phantom platform, modified to handle the weight of an EV battery system. That battery system will likely have a capacity similar to the BMW i7’s 120 kWh to bear the weight of a Phantom-sized vehicle.

The Silent Shadow is expected to have a range in the 400-mile range. The new model will likely be as powerful as the i7, if not more so. The i7 puts out 640 hp. The Silver Shadow will probably pack a similar punch if it doesn’t out-perform its BMW cousin.

The Silver Shadow’s price tag will likely cause some sticker shock

No one sets out to get a bargain on a Rolls-Royce. These handmade cars are chosen for their excellence and opulence, not value. An electric model will likely be even more costly than combustion engine models.

On average, the typical EV costs between 10% and 40% more than a comparable ICE option. It’s hard to say how closely a bespoke vehicle will follow the pricing trends of mass-production cars. The two production processes are wildly different.

Buyers can use the Phantom’s starting price and EV pricing trends to make an educated guess about how much the brand may charge for the Silent Shadow. Rolls-Royce offers the Phantom starting at $455,000. A 10%-40% increase would mean the EV could cost between $500,000 and $637,000.

These figures are based on informed speculation, but Rolls-Royce will be releasing hard details later in the year. Until then, lovers of the brand are left to wonder about what will likely be the most expensive production EV ever made.

Tesla is currently the most popular electric vehicle brand in the automotive industry. Its lineup has shocked and amazed consumers for the past few years. It appears that Tesla’s lineup is only getting better and more accessible to the average consumer. The company is even introducing a $25,000 hatchback soon. The automaker is constantly improving and upgrading its lineup. Its new $400+ million deal with Samsung proves that the company is always looking to make its vehicles more convenient for drivers, starting with the Cybertruck.

What can’t a Tesla do? The folks at the American electric vehicle and clean energy company work extremely hard to make sure every Tesla is chock full of gizmos and gadgets. Every Tesla is like a swiss army knife. Its lineup was designed to provide consumers with clean energy alternatives and amazing performance, but Teslas are so much more than just vehicles.

Tesla provides an experience just as much as it provides a product. The brand is immersive, and the more Tesla products you own, the easier Tesla EV ownership becomes. From Wall Connectors to Solar Roofs and Powerwalls for your home, it’s easy to get immersed in the company’s products. CEO Elon Musk and the engineers at Tesla also ensure that driving a Tesla is a unique, one-of-a-kind experience. They are able to do so by providing exclusive features that other automakers cannot compete with.

The Tesla experience

The Tesla experience can best be described as refreshing because there isn’t quite anything like Tesla’s wide array of original features. The American automaker was the first company to heavily lean into autonomous vehicle creation. Its Full Self Driving feature uses front-end sensing technology to drive and brake accordingly. The company’s autonomous vehicles are some of the most advanced on the market and are consistently improving.

There are plenty of other features that are exclusive to Tesla vehicles as well. Tesla vehicles include features like Dog Mode, a way to keep dogs comfortable as they wait for their owners. They also feature Romance Mode, a mode that adjusts the temperature, music, and onscreen display to set the mood. Some Teslas even include Bioweapon Defense Mode, a feature that filters air through a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Every Tesla model is innovative for its vehicle class, but none more so than the Cybertruck.

The Tesla Cybertruck is about to get a big uprgade

If Tesla is the automaker of the future, then the Tesla Cybertruck should be its flagship model. The Cybertruck’s body style is unlike any truck in existence. It frankly looks more like a spaceship than a truck. The Cybertruck doesn’t just look otherwordly, its features are also out of this world as well. Its smooth monochrome exoskeleton is made of cold-rolled stainless steel, making it one of the most durable trucks on the market.

The Tesla Cybertruck features a built-in loading ramp. Its adaptive air suspension and 16-inch max ground clearance are perfect for offroading. Its digital camera-based rearview mirror makes up for the truck’s lack of visibility because of its interesting shape. Now, according to InsideEVs, Tesla is paying Samsung $436 million for cameras for its Cybertruck. But what does this mean for Tesla’s pickup?

The news could mean that the Cybertruck’s visibility issues turned out to be a bigger problem than the automaker anticipated when designing the vehicle. It also means Cybertrucks will be outfitted with more cameras that are likely to be a better quality than the original cameras. These cameras could offer visibility from all the angles a driver wants. Cameras are also necessary to Tesla’s Full Self Driving feature. The deal with Samsung means Tesla Cybertrucks are about to get a huge upgrade that will make them both more practical and enjoyable.

Sad news, gang, the semiconductor chip shortage is still in full swing. The global chip shortage just caught up to the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021 Ram 1500 too. Production of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 might come to a stop.

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee faces semiconductor chip shortages

Say it isn’t so. Jeep is shutting down the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee production, and the Ram 1500 plant is also being closed due to the ongoing shortage of semiconductor chips. In an attempt to conserve chips, they were being used to make the most profitable vehicles.

Jeep has kept its plant in Belvidere, Illinois, closed for most of the year. It builds the regular Jeep Cherokee, but the chips have been used for more popular options like the Grand Cherokee instead. Now the plant at Jefferson North that makes the Grand Cherokee and new Jeep Grand Cherokee L will be closed for the week.

Ram already planned to shut down its Sterling Heights Assembly Plant next week for maintenance, but now it will be closed this week as well. This is where the 2021 Ram 1500 is being manufactured.

Are the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 in trouble?

Having to close the plants that build the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021 Ram 1500 may seem troubling, but Stellantis isn’t worried yet. The Ram 1500 has experienced incredible growth this year.

Ram reported a 47 percent increase in sales compared to 2020. Plus, it receives credit for increasing profit for Stellantis North America by more than 30 percent in the second quarter of 2021. Jeep is also doing well, with sales up by 19 percent in the second quarter of 2021 compared to 2020.

But despite their best efforts, Jeep and Ram are still struggling to keep the most profitable assembly lines running. They could still be harmed by the continued global chip shortage that’s ongoing at crucial levels.

Why do Jeep and Ram need chips?

The chips are little transistors made from silicon found in most of the minerals in the Earth’s surface. They enable computers, smartphones, and electrical devices in vehicles to function. Jeep, Ram, Ford, and more need them for infotainment systems, brakes, steering, and more.

The shortage was created by an increased demand for personal electronics during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) shutdown. Everyone got personal electronics to work from home, and production couldn’t keep up.

Now auto manufacturers aren’t the only ones that need more chips. The Playstation 5 needs chips as well as other electronic companies. This is fueling increased competition for the chips. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021 Ram 1500 could get back on track soon, as chip-level slowly return to normal. The shortage is expected to improve toward the fall slightly, but levels may not return to normal until 2022.

Some auto manufacturers have continued to build vehicles without the chips. They can be seen stored in parking lots close to factories. The chips will be added to those vehicles once they become available.

We hope that this issue doesn’t plague auto manufacturers for much longer because we’re excited to see what 2021 and 2022 models bring to the table. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

If you live in an area with many trees or have a big yard with a lot of landscaping, leaf blowers can be handy tools to make lawn maintenance easier. Plus, fallen leaves can damage your car’s exterior and clog up air intakes. Another use for a blower is to dry your car after washing it to prevent damage from towels. So, now that you’ve decided a leaf blower is something you need, the next decision is battery, gas, or electric. Which is best?

There are quite a few benefits of battery handheld leaf blowers. For one, they are almost always a lighter option, which means less strain on your muscles, particularly if you have a lot of leaves to blow around. Like electric lawn mowers, they are also much quieter than gas leaf blowers and cleaner, and more eco-friendly. Furthermore, since they have a battery, you don’t have to worry about tripping over a cord, unlike an electric blower. This also gives you a lot more range to work with.

Consumer Reports recommends 11 models

There are dozens of leaf blowers available, and Consumer Reports has a list of 11 recommended models. That’s still a lot to choose from, so we’ve narrowed the list to the five models that earned CR’s “Best Buy” designation. These models, according to CR, “blend value and performance,” making them best buys.

5 ‘Best Buy’ battery handheld leaf blowers

Stihl BGA 57 leaf blower

This was Consumer Reports’ top pick for this category, and the only negative was that it only has one available speed, limiting your control in tight areas. Overall, it is quick, quiet, and effective. It weighs 7.6 pounds and delivers aggressive cleaning and blowing power while still being quiet enough to use without hearing protection. You can pick this up at Ace Hardware for $199.

Ego LB5302

Interestingly, even though it was not the highest scoring blower, CR noted that it had “no discernible flaws in its performance.” It has multiple speeds available, weighs 7.8 pounds, delivers quick, aggressive cleaning power, and is relatively quiet, with no need for hearing protection. You can get it from Amazon for $179, and it carries the “Amazon’s Choice” tag.

Makita XBU03SM1

This leaf blower did not have any discernible lows and was a little lighter at 6.1 pounds. It has multiple speeds available and has very aggressive blowing power and moderately aggressive cleaning power. Also, it is relatively quiet, and it does not require hearing protection. You can get it from Amazon for $199, and it also carries the “Amazon’s Choice” tag.

Kobalt (Lowe’s) KHB 2580-06

One of the heavier blowers, at 9.2 pounds, this choice does not have any discernible lows either. In addition to multiple speeds, you can fix the blowing speed, usually on the highest setting, and you don’t have to have your finger on the trigger the whole time. It is quiet, with no need for hearing protection, is quick, and has aggressive cleaning and blowing power. You can pick it up at Lowe’s for $159. The battery is sold separately, but the 80-volt battery works for multiple Kobalt products.

Oregon BL300

This blower is also 9.2 pounds, with no discernible lows, and is also the most expensive leaf blower on this list. It has multiple speeds, works quickly and quietly, does not need any hearing protection, and provides aggressive cleaning and blowing power. You can get it at Amazon for $359.
