After teasers, rumors, and much speculation, Harley-Davidson has finally revealed its new global motorcycle. We’ve known that Harley-Davidson would bring its Custom 1250 concept to production, but some details remained unclear. Now, though, the wraps are off. And underneath them is a brand-new bike with a familiar name: the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S.

2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S: what’s in a name?

Yup, the new Harley-Davidson motorcycle bears the Sportster name. But besides a V-twin, that’s about the only thing the 2021 Sportster S shares with something like the Iron 883. And even that V-twin has little in common with the current Evolution engine.

Firstly, rather than an air-cooled Evolution, the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S uses a tweaked version of the Pan America’s liquid-cooled ‘Revolution’ 1250cc V-twin. The S’s version, ‘Revolution 1250T,’ is slightly less powerful. Rather than 150 hp and 95 lb-ft of torque, the 1250T makes 121 hp and 94 lb-ft of torque.

However, the 1250T’s peak torque arrives at lower RPM for improved low-speed acceleration. And the V-twin still redlines at 9500 RPM and uses adjustment-free hydraulic valve lifters. Plus, instead of a five-speed transmission, the Sportster S has a six-speed one with a slipper clutch.

Plus, unlike in the current Harley-Davidson Sportster models, the 2021 S’s engine acts as a stressed member of the frame. As a result, Harley-Davidson claims the liquid-cooled bike’s chassis is stiffer than the air-cooled one. And despite having a larger engine, the S is 62 pounds lighter than the 2021 Iron 1200.

Also, the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S has more standard tech than the current Sportster models. The liquid-cooled bike has three riding modes as well as cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, and wheel-slip control. Also, tire-pressure monitoring, LED lighting, Brembo brakes, fully-adjustable Showa suspension, and a 4” TFT display with Bluetooth and app-based navigation.

Is the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S replacing the current Sportster line?

Considering how different the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S is from the other Sportsters, some might wonder why the new bike uses the name. Earlier rumors suggested it would be called Nightster, but that bike was also a Sportster-derived model. With this new liquid-cooled cruiser on the scene, where does that leave the air-cooled models?

In all likelihood, not long for this world. The Harley press release says the new bike “will redefine the Sportster series.” And the company’s website calls the 2021 Sportster S “the first chapter of a whole new book of the Sportster saga.” Also, European emissions regulations forced Harley-Davidson to cancel its entry-level air-cooled bikes. Taken altogether, it seems like the Sportster S is the new face of the Sportster line.

And it appears Harley-Davidson will be making more models based on the 2021 Sportster S, Cycle World muses. Considering this bike is called ‘S,’ there’s likely a lower-spec, non-S version in the works. This hypothetical bike could use a smaller-capacity version of the Revolution 1250T V-twin, making it the Iron 883 to the S’s Iron 1200.

On that last point, Harley-Davidson may already have such an engine in the works. In 2019, the company announced it was developing 1250cc and 975cc Revolution V-twins for the Pan America adventure bike and Bronx streetfighter. Originally, the Bronx was supposed to debut in late 2020. But while it’s been put on hold, Harley never officially canceled it, Cycle World points out. And considering this new bike costs noticeably more than the Softail Standard in Europe, MCN says, there’s a reason for Harley-Davidson to make a smaller-capacity, cheaper version.

How much does it cost?

Speaking of cost, the 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S starts at $14,999 before fees and optional extras. For comparison, the 2021 Iron 1200 starts at $10,249.

Those extra features include two non-black colors, a tail bag, a detachable windshield, passenger accommodations, as well as several seat options. Plus, buyers can order the bike with mid-controls instead of forward ones. But you’ll have to wait until fall 2021 before the first examples arrive in dealers.

The 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S brings a lot of changes to the brand’s iconic model line. But they also let the bike keep riding into new adventures.

Are you in the market for a new luxury SUV under $40,000? Chances are, if you are, the 2021 BMW X1 is somewhere on your list of new SUVs to check out. But is the cheapest new BMW SUV actually worth your attention? Let’s find out.

Which new BMW SUV is the cheapest?

BMW’s new lineup features several SUVs. But if you’re in the market for a cheap new BMW SUV? Look no further than the 2021 BMW X1. This year’s model starts at $35,400 and is available in two trim levels. Upgrading to a more well-equipped trim level won’t have you breaking the bank, either. In fact, upgrade from the base BMW X1 to the X1 xDrive28i, and you’ll still be spending less than $40,000 on this new BMW SUV.

Driving the 2021 BMW X1

2021 BMW X1 | BMW

The 2021 BMW X1 may be the cheapest new BMW SUV, but what is it like to drive? Well, according to Consumer Reports, driving this new BMW SUV is similar to driving a sedan. It comes powered by a 228-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission and provides both “ample motivation” and very smooth shifts.

The bad news, however, is that the 2021 BMW X1  “doesn’t impress you with its handling precision.” In fact, according to Consumer Reports, driving an SUV like the Ford Escape is just as rewarding. The organization explained that the X1’s lackluster handling could be attributed to the SUV’s front-wheel drive platform, which is shared with the Mini Cooper Clubman.

The good news is that Car and Driver had a much better time behind the wheel of the 2021 BMW X1. In fact, while Consumer Reports gave the X1 a somewhat disappointing review, Car and Driver reports that this year’s new BMW X1 “delivers much of the same crisp handling and ride refinement that the BMW brand is known for.”

As for the BMW X1’s interior? According to Car and Driver, it’s “nicely appointed with mostly premium materials.” Unfortunately, there are plenty of cheaper materials used throughout its interior too. Its glovebox door is just as flimsy as a plastic lunchbox. Meanwhile, the bin hidden under the front seat “feels as if BMW bought it in bulk from a dollar-store fire sale,” reports Car and Driver.

Consumer Reports made a similar assessment of the cheapest new BMW SUV, adding that its front seats are small and narrow and don’t provide the driver with much thigh support. Some reviewers also complained that the seat’s cushion pushed into the underside of their thigh. As for rearseat accommodations? According to Consumer Reports, while the X1’s second-row provides adequate headroom, it isn’t quite as welcoming as the Audi Q3.

Materials and space aside, the 2021 BMW X1 does come well-stocked with features. In fact, opting for the base X1 sDrive28i gets you standard features like 8-way power front seats with 1-way manual headrests, automatic climate control with micro-filter and air recirculation, a premium 7-speaker sound system, and Apple CarPlay.

How this new BMW SUV compares to the competition

While the 2021 BMW X1 is the cheapest new BMW SUV, chances are it’s not the only new luxury SUV on your list. In fact, according to U.S. News & World Report, if you’re shopping for a luxury subcompact SUV, you’re probably considering the Mercedes Benz GLA and the Audi Q3 too. Let’s talk about the Mercedes Benz GLA first.

According to U.S. News, while the Mercedes-Benz GLA makes for a compelling choice among the luxury subcompact SUV segment, it comes up short compared to the BMW X1. It not only delivers less impressive performance, but its touch screen is roughly two inches smaller than the X1’s. It also provides eight cubic feet less of overall cargo room. And when it comes to pricing? While the BMW X1 starts at $35,400, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA starts at $36,230.

As for the Audi Q3? On the inside, it looks and feels more luxurious than the BMW X1, U.S. News reports. It also comes standard with more features, including leather seating. Unlike the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 also features Android Auto. The Audi Q3 is a cheaper alternative to the BMW X1 too. That being said, the X1 does offer sharper handling and more cargo space than its Audi competition.

Is the 2021 BMW X1 worth buying?

The 2021 BMW X1 may be the cheapest new BMW SUV, but there’s no denying that it gets some fairly mixed reviews. Before deciding whether or not this year’s model is worth buying, we recommend getting behind the wheel for a test drive. After all, that is the best way to determine whether or not this new BMW SUV is the right fit for you.

Are you considering making the switch to an electric vehicle in the future? Like many drivers, the switch to electricity has promising benefits. One of the significant drawbacks is charging during unsatisfactory conditions, such as inclement weather and power outages. So, how do you charge a Tesla during a power outage?

Charging a Tesla might seem like a daunting task at first, but most owners get used to it quickly. Tesla offers many options for charging, such as supercharging stations, home charging, and destination chargers at popular locations. However, one such situation that has presented itself recently is the question of charging without power. How do Tesla electric vehicle owners charge in the case of a power outage?

In states like California, where electricity is generally the most expensive in the country, planned power shutoffs are a way of life. When the grid gets overloaded, power companies will shut down electricity to give the system a break. In the past, Tesla has sent out push notifications urging owners to charge vehicles ahead of time. Tesla also suggests putting the electric vehicle into Range Mode to optimize energy usage and maximize range.

Can the Tesla Powerwall charge a Tesla in an outage?

Tesla offers a product called the Tesla Powerwall to assist with this issue. The company notes that the Powerwall coordinates with personal vehicles for “enhanced vehicle charging during a power outage without exceeding the energy and power capabilities of your Powerwall.” The Powerwall is primarily used in conjunction with Tesla solar panels but can work in a pinch.

In the article above from Clean Technica, two Tesla Powerwalls and Tesla Solar powered one family through a scheduled eight-hour outage. Of course, being able to prepare in advance for an outage has benefits. The Powerwalls seamlessly switched on when the power went out.

In the case of an outage, the Powerwall can charge both your electric vehicle and support your home’s needs for a certain amount of time. This won’t work over an extended period of time but could get you through a blackout or a storm while the grid recovers. It seems like Elon Musk is aware of such power outage issues and could be working on a universal solution behind the scenes.

Do Tesla solar panels work during power outage?

Additionally, most Tesla Supercharging stations have been equipped with Tesla Powerpacks. These Powerpacks, plus Tesla Solar, have equipped Supercharging stations with the ability to charge during power outages. Tesla Solar can also produce electricity during daytime power outages. In the case of the Powerpack, Tesla Solar can provide power for around 12 hours during an outage.

As the U.S. continues to strengthen the electric vehicle charging network, these options can help in the meantime. While these options might be costly and further intertwine your life with Tesla products, these are excellent options to keep your electric vehicle running during an outage. The ability to charge a Tesla while the rest of the street is out of power might also allow you to assist in an emergency.

In conclusion, owners can charge a Tesla in a few ways in the face of a power outage. Having a Tesla Powerwall or Solar panels at home can alleviate the issue. If that isn’t an option, the ability to charge at a Tesla Supercharging station is another option to keep your vehicle on the road.

The 2021 Hyundai Kona and 2021 Mazda CX-30 are both Consumer Reports recommended subcompact SUVs. They both have a reputation for being safe and reliable SUVs. On top of their Consumer Reports-recommended status, subcompact SUVs are attractive to people who want an SUV but don’t want something massive.

2021 Hyundai Kona | Hyundai

Both the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30 have a good road test score

Consumer Reports tests vehicles at its enormous Connecticut facility. They purchase the cars so that there’s no question about bias or whether car manufacturers are giving them sound vehicles that don’t represent the model as a whole. Consumer Reports conducts tests such as emergency handling, braking, and comfort.

Consumer Reports calls the 2021 Hyundai Kona “playful and inexpensive.” The Kona’s acceleration isn’t great, scoring just a 2 out of 5. However, the transmission and routine handling were both very good, getting a 4 out of 5. Emergency handling is also good, at a 4 out of 5.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30’s acceleration is slightly better than the Kona’s, scoring a 3 out of 5. Transmission, routine handling, and emergency handling are all the same, scoring a 4 out of 5.

Braking is better in the 2021 Hyundai Kona. The Kona scores a 5 out of 5. It can stop from 60 mph on dry pavement in 129 feet and wet pavement in 131 feet. The Mazda CX-30’s braking is still very good, scoring a 4 out of 5. The CX0-30 can stop from 60 mph in 133 feet on dry pavement and 147 feet on wet pavement.

Reliability is excellent in both the Kona and CX-30

To determine the reliability of a vehicle, Consumer Reports sends out surveys to people who have bought previous versions of the vehicle. They then combine this survey data with what they know about the current model. They say that with these two pieces of information, they can “expertly predict the reliability of new and redesigned models.”

The 2021 Hyundai Kona scores a 5 out of 5 for its reliability. The 2021 Mazda CX-30 also has a 5 out of 5 for its reliability. The Mazda’s reliability is tied for first place out of all of the subcompact SUVs. The CX-30 and Lexus UX both have a 95 for reliability. The Hyundai Kona comes in fifth, with a still-respectable 87.

Both the CX-30 and Kona are safe, but the CX-30 has more safety equipment

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 and 2021 Hyundai Kona have identical NHTSA crash test ratings. Each of these subcompact SUVs has five stars in everything except rollover. They both scored a four in the rollover categories.

As far as safety features go, both the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30 come standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking at city speeds, lane departuring warning and lane keeping assist. However, the Mazda CX-30 also has automatic emergency braking at highway speeds and pedestrian detection.

Overall, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 has a slight edge. Although the 2021 Hyundai Kona has better braking, the CX-30 has a couple of additional safety features and also a better reliability score. Although you can’t go wrong with either subompact SUV, the CX-30 has a slight edge.
