The Ford F-150 is America’s best selling truck, but is it as American as people believe? There was a time when buying Ford meant supporting American jobs, an American company, and the American economy overall. Yet as our world has become smaller and companies have begun to connect with and depend on organizations and a labor force outside of the United States, that’s changed. In fact, it’s changed so much that the F-150 isn’t the most American truck – it’s actually the sixth, and 29th overall.

A survey conducted annually by Cars.com concluded that nearly three quarters of car shoppers consider where their vehicle comes from. Yet not many people know where that really is. Many people assume a Ford, or a Chevy, or a Ram truck is made in America. The truth is a lot more complicated than that.

These days car manufacturers don’t just buy all of their parts from one place and build their vehicles in one plant. Different vehicles are built in different locations, some outside of the U.S. Parts may be sourced from the United State, or they might come from overseas. The labor force producing the parts and building the cars may or may not be American. Whether that matters to you is another story, but the truth is, the origin of a vehicle isn’t straightforward.

Cars.com collected information about where vehicles are manufactured, as well as where their parts come from and the makeup of the labor source that gets that car to the dealership. They then compiled a list of 90 cars. These are ranked by how “American” they are. Cars.com didn’t include vehicles with small production numbers, fleet-only vehicles, and vehicles in their last year of production. The results show that the F-150 isn’t the most American truck.

Where is the Ford F-150 built?

The regular Ford F-150 is built in two factories. One of these is Dearborn Truck in Michigan, and the other is the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri.  The Ford F-150 Hybrid, a little further down the list, is also built in Dearborn Michigan.

Despite this, the F-150 is only number 29 on the list of 90 most American vehicles. The hybrid version is even lower on the list, taking spot number 44. This means that a combination of parts and labor must be from outside of the U.S.

Which trucks are more American than the F-150?

If supporting the American economy is one of your top priorities when truck shopping, there are five better choices. Number six overall on the list of most American cars is the Honda Ridgeline. People may be surprised to learn that Honda makes the most American pickup truck, but it’s true. The Ridgeline is made in Lincoln, Alabama.

Toyota makes the number 10 Tundra in San Antonio, Texas. Or you could opt for the Chevy Colorado, number 14 on the list. GMC makes the number 15 Canyon in Wentzville, Missouri, same as the Colorado. Even the Ford Ranger is a spot above the F-150, taking number 28 with its production in Wayne, Michigan.

The next time you’re car shopping, if buying American is your priority, don’t just go by car manufacturer names. Do some research, consult the Cars.com list, and spend your money in a way that’s meaningful to you.

By now, you’re probably aware that Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla. What you might not know is that one of the richest people on the planet wrecked a million-dollar car that wasn’t even insured. Here’s the story.

Elon Musk’s road to riches

Born in  South Africa in 1971, Elon Reeve Musk was raised by his Canadian-born mother, fashion model May Haldeman Musk, and his engineer dad, Errol Graham Musk. Elon perused the entire Encyclopedia Britannica when he was 9 years old, according to his IMDb bio. By the time he was 12, he had invented the videogame Blastar, which he sold for around $500, The Verge reports.

When he was 17, Musk immigrated to Canada to avoid the military service required of young men in apartheid-era South Africa. He got his Canadian citizenship before heading to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned dual degrees in physics and economics.

Afterward, Musk moved to California, where he enrolled at Stanford. His plan was to pursue another degree, but he dropped out after two days and started an internet company with his brother, Kimbal, instead, Biography reports.

With a net worth of around $150 billion as of this writing, Musk is the world’s third-richest person. Only Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tiffany & Co. owner Bernard Arnault are wealthier, according to Forbes.

About Musk’s million-dollar car wreck

After Musk sold Zip2 to Compaq, he used $1 million of the proceeds to purchase a 627-hp McLaren F1 sports car. Capable of attaining speeds in excess of 200 mph, the McLaren was Musk’s everyday ride, which he put an astounding 11,000 miles on the odometer in the first year, The Drive reports.

In 2000, Musk was chauffeuring his friend, investor Peter Thiel, to a business meeting in Palo Alto, California. According to Musk, he “didn’t really know how to drive” the rocket-fast roadster. Nonetheless, when Thiel allegedly asked about the car’s performance, Musk grinned and said, “Watch this.”

Musk put the pedal to the metal and attempted to change lanes at high speed. That’s when the rear wheels flew off, and the car went into a spin. According to The Drive, Musk’s McLaren caught three feet of air before spearing nose-first into an embankment, bouncing off, and spinning some more. Eventually, the 6.1-liter V12 road rocket came to a stop. The car was facing the same direction it had before the wreck, but the windshield was shattered, the wheels were gone, and the suspension was toast. Musk’s first comment after the accident?

“Wow, Peter. That was really intense.”

Musk and Thiel made it to their meeting after hitchhiking the rest of the way.

Who drives a supercar without insurance?

It might seem nonsensical, but Musk drove an uninsured supercar, and it didn’t work out so well. As he told Pando Daily, the McLaren wasn’t insured at the time of the wreck. He didn’t explain why, but The Drive surmises it could be simply that he was so rich he could afford to pay for anything that happened to the car. Remarkably, it wasn’t totaled.

Musk had his McLaren repaired but sold it in 2007. He told Wheels magazine:

“The McLaren is a great car. It’s a work of art, a really beautiful piece of engineering, but I didn’t want people always writing that I have a high-performance gasoline sports car, so I decided to sell it.”

Summers are usually full of family vacations and road trips with friends, and summer 2021 is expected to be an even more popular year for road trips due to many shutdowns last summer from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that everyone is itching to get back on the road, Carfax released their picks for the “10 Best Road Trip Cars & SUVs in 2021″ to help people in the market for a new car decide on one that makes driving long distances fun. Interestingly, only one luxury vehicle made the list, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Learn more about this popular luxury sedan, and other road-trip-ready vehicles, below.

Carfax released its picks for the best road trip vehicles based on its set of criteria, including comfortable seats, excellent safety ratings, plenty of cargo room, superior fuel efficiency, and more. The list features a healthy mix of automakers, and it contains a good mix of cars, SUVs, and even a truck.

At the top of the list is the 2021 Honda Odyssey, a minivan that has been a family favorite for years. It gets excellent gas mileage for a minivan, 28 MPG, and you can go almost 550 miles before needing to fill up again. Parents and kids will both love this vehicle, as it offers a rear-seat entertainment system and a Wi-Fi hotspot to keep everyone entertained on long drives.

The other vehicles on the list after the Honda Odyssey include the Mazda CX-9, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Telluride, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Outback, Honda Ridgeline, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Ford Mustang GT Convertible.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the only luxury car on the list

Coming in ninth place on the list is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is the only spot given to a luxury carmaker. Carfax called this vehicle “one of the most luxurious road-trip-ready cars on the market.” Not only does this car get excellent gas mileage, with 31 mpg on the highway, it can also go nearly 540 miles before needing to stop for gas.

U.S. News also praised the 2021 E-Class for its beautiful and comfortable cabin that was refreshed this year. The 2021 E-Class also got an infotainment system upgrade that brings a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and more. You can also opt to add a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless charging, voice commands, and a premium 23-speaker Burmester surround-sound system.

Carfax mentions the four trim options for the 2021 E-Class, though it recommends the E-Class wagon for people who want the most passenger and cargo room for their money.

An overview of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Whether you’re planning a summer road trip or not, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an excellent choice for individuals and families for everyday use. Perhaps the best part of this car is the impressive engine options. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that can produce 255 hp.

This is plenty for most drivers, but those who want a bit more power can upgrade to the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing 363 hp, or the twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 429 hp. If that’s still not enough, you can splurge on the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 603 hp, but this option starts at $107,500, almost double the price of the base.

When it comes to safety, the E-Class is also hard to beat. It comes standard with Mercedes Pre-Safe, a feature that tightens seatbelts and rolls up the windows if it detects a rear-end collision. Also, expect forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and more. Plus, you can add advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with the 2021 E-Class for road trips or daily commutes. This incredible luxury sedan starts at $54,250.

Last year spy shots of a refreshed GMC Sierra were blasted around the internet. It was widely expected from those shots that an improved Sierra would hit the streets later this year as a 2022 model. But with plant shutdowns and the COVID-19 interruptions that isn’t how it will be. Instead, GM plans on producing the current configuration of Sierra as a 2022 GMC model for a short time before bringing out the refreshed truck as a 2023 model.

The 2022 Sierra will be called 1500 Limited

2021 GMC Sierra 1500 | GMC

The 2022 Sierra is being called a “continuation model.” That’s according to GM-Trucks.com. It found through a bulletin sent by GM to its dealers that the 2022 Sierra will be called 1500 Limited. That’s because it will get a “shortened model year” according to the info in the bulletin.

Though details won’t be forthcoming until next month, GM says the 2022 Limited will be a continuation of the current generation. It will feature a full range of models and trims as produced for the 2021 Sierras. No reason is given for this move by GM but the reasons are fairly obvious.

Production schedules have been hampered by COVID-19 and chip shortages

The production shutdowns first over COVID-19 and now microchip shortages related to COVIS-19 closures are the main reasons. These shutdowns have wreaked havoc on production schedules. And they have pushed back development time as well.

We already knew that two engine options for 2022 Sierras had been killed. The 4.3-liter V6 and one of the 5.3-liter V8s weren’t making it to production. It is not clear whether this is due to production setbacks related to these engines, or is an effort to streamline the limited 2022 GMC production. If the latter, it would be one way to speed up assembly line production.

There may also be supplier issues with some components related to these two engines. Many of these supplier problems are an indirect result of COVID-19 problems lingering since 2020. Whatever the reason, the 2022 model run of GMC Sierra pickups will be shortened to make room for the improved 2023 Sierra.

The refreshed 2023 GMC Sierra will feature a new fascia and interior

When it does hit the showrooms expect the refreshed Sierra to have a revised fascia and much-revamped interior. Both the Sierra and Silverado have been criticized for cheaper-looking interiors related to the Ram 1500. And the Ram 1500 leapfrogged over the Chevy Silverado to snag second place in sales for 2020.

The Chevy Silverado has been solidly in second place in sales for decades. So the Ram 1500 taking that spot was a wake-up call for GM to get their pickup trucks in line with improved interiors and features.
