Fast and Furious may offer plenty of vehicular eye candy, but it’s not the only film franchise with iconic autos. And when it comes to car celebrities, few can rival the star power of the Batmobile. However, while Batman’s had several signature sleds throughout the years, Bruce Wayne needs some wheels, too. And it appears that the upcoming The Flash movie will bring back a beloved Bruce with a city car to match. Hence why Michael Keaton was recently spotted behind the wheel of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet Concept.

The 2017 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet Concept showed off the sub-brand’s new look with electric style

Maybach’s recent history has been a bit rocky, to say the least. Although today’s Mercedes-Maybach models offer appreciable luxury and performance, that wasn’t the case a few years ago.

Mercedes’ initial attempts to resurrect Maybach “as a stand-alone Rolls-Royce and Bentley competitor” were rather unsuccessful, Car and Driver explains. But in 2016, the German automaker tried again, relaunching Maybach as a sub-brand like AMG. That relaunch was capped off by the 2016 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Concept, a sleek electric coupe. And the next year, it was followed up by a convertible, the 2017 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet Concept.

Like the coupe, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is an EV with an underbody-mounted battery pack and four electric motors, The Drive explains. However, while the 2016 concept has 738 hp, the 2017 one has 750 hp. That’s good for a claimed 0-60 mph time of under four seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Plus, Mercedes claims the Vision 6 Cabriolet has a 200-mile driving range.

The electric powertrain, though, arguably plays second fiddle to the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet Concept’s main feature. Or rather, its main features: the interior and exterior design.

This roadster is almost 20’ long even though it’s only a two-seater. There’s rose gold on the 24” wheels’ center caps and woven into the fabric top, MotorTrend says. The interior is covered in Nappa leather, aluminum, fiber-optic lighting, and open-pore wood, and features rose-gold trim pieces. Plus, there’s no infotainment screen; instead, it’s a strip that rings the cabin.

Why is Michael Keaton driving the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet?

Although many concept cars are static displays, the 2017 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet isn’t one of them. Though it rarely makes on-road appearances, it’s a fully-functioning EV, Motor1 notes. And Michael Keaton indirectly confirmed that recently.

Although some of his most recent superhero work was for Marvel, Michael Keaton is no stranger to Gotham. He played Batman in 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns, and he’s set to reprise the role in the upcoming The Flash movie. And not as a ‘new’ Batman, but the same one he originally played, The Drive explains.

As of this writing, it’s unknown if Michael Keaton’s original Batmobile will make an appearance in the movie. But based on the on-set photos shown above, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet Concept will, with Keaton behind the wheel. Likely, the convertible will star as Bruce Wayne’s status-symbol car, like how Christian Bale’s Wayne drove a Lamborghini.

When will we get to see the car on the silver screen? And could there be a production version?

The Flash is set to premiere in theaters on November 4, 2022. So, if you want to see Michael Keaton drive the stylish electric convertible, mark your calendars.

Given that automakers often use movies as product-placement opportunities, does this mean we’ll see a road-going version of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6? It’s not impossible, MT muses, but not likely, either. It’s worth noting that the first Avengers movie had Robert Downey Jr. drive a convertible Acura NSX. And roughly a decade later, such a car doesn’t exist.

Nevertheless, seeing this Maybach EV prowl through Gotham might be worth the price of a ticket.

If you’re a dog owner, you’ve likely transported your dog somewhere, even if it’s just the vet. And if you’re more adventurous, you may take your dog hiking or on trips pretty regularly. Those who put their dog in their car all the time may want to take into consideration the best cars for dog owners the next time they’re car shopping. Let’s look at what makes a car a good option for dog owners.

2021 Subaru Outback | Subaru

What makes a vehicle one of the best cars for dog owners?

Obviously you want something rugged that can handle the wear and tear of a Labradoodle or Bull Mastiff shaking off lake water in the interior. While leather seats are easy to clean, a dog’s nails can tear the delicate material, unless you put a pad underneath them. Of course these can slide around if you’re dog is the type to bark at every German Shepard that you pass, so shop for accessories carefully. Cloth seats may be safer for your furry friend, since they’re less likely to slip on them, and they are cooler in the summer (though never leave your dog in the car when it’s even remotely warm).

You should also consider storage space, especially rear cargo space if you’ll need to also transport a dog crate. Depending on the size of your dog or dogs, those things can be massive, and rear seats that fold down are a huge plus. Even if you’re just buckling your dog in (and you should always buckle them in), you’ll want enough space for humans dogs to sit comfortably.

Here are five of the best cars for dog owners out there in 2021:

2021 Audi Q5

2021 Audi Q5 | Audi

The 2021 Audi Q5 is a great option because it’s a smaller SUV, which means your dog won’t have to jump or stretch as much to get in and out. Of course, if your dog is older or it’s too far of a jump, you can always add a ramp.

Audi offers some pet accessories like harnesses, as well as mats and cargo mats. The Q5 comes standard with leather seats, so it’s easier to clean as well.

The 2021 Subaru Forester is another great option for people with dogs

The 2021 Subaru Forester is the epitome of rugged. When people think of Subaru, they think of trips to the mountains, a trusty Golden Retriever smiling (dogs smile, right?) from the back seat. The actual Forester delivers, with removable mats, easy-to-clean seats, and plenty of space.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is  a good choice for dog owners

Jeep owners tend to be enormous fans of their compact SUVs, and if you do decide to get a 2021 Jeep Wrangler, you’ll have plenty of people to ask for help. The Jeep Wrangler is a great choice for dog owners because you can wash everything inside. This is perfect for dogs who love to run through rivers and roll around in mud puddles.

Jeep Wranglers are also a great choice because of the accessories available. Not only does Jeep offer its own accessories, but there are tons of other companies with great options like ramps and harnesses.

The Subaru Outback is as great as its Forester sibling for dogs

It’s no surprise that there are two Subarus on this list. The Outback is another vehicle that is up for anything. It’s easy to get dogs in and out of the outback, and it’s also simple to clean. Like the other cars on this list, the Outback has loads of accessories, and you can also get Outback-compatible accessories from other companies, too.

The 2021 Tesla Model Y is the best electric vehicle for dog owners

The Tesla Model Y has more head space than other Teslas, which is good if you have a taller dog. The Model Y has seats that feel like leather and are easy to clean, but are actually animal-friendly. The Model Y is easy for dogs to get in and out of, and it’s great for the environment, too.

Yet the best part is Tesla’s Dog Mode, which allows dog owners to lock their Tesla and leave the air conditioning or heat on. The Tesla Model Y even has a screen which showcases the temperature and the message, “My owner will be back soon,” so worried people walking by know that your dog is safe.

Sometimes the first thing you want to do once you get a new vehicle is hit the gas. It’s normal to see what your new truck, SUV, or car can do. However, with mandatory speed limiters and driver monitors, it may be impossible to go over the speed limit.

Speed limiters and driver monitors are required in Europe

2021 Volvo XC90 | Volvo

According to Roadshow, new vehicles sold in Europe after May 2022 will be required to have speed limiters and systems to monitor driver attention levels. The European Commission announced these mandates on Tuesday and noted that the intelligent speed limiters alone could reduce fatalities on European roads by 20 percent.

The announcement came right after Volvo released its commitment to limit the top speed on all its future cars to 112 miles per hour. They also announced that all of its future vehicles will have camera systems designed to detect drowsy, distracted, or intoxicated drivers.

Meanwhile, the United States doesn’t have a mandate for automatic emergency braking yet. However, most automakers have pledged to make AEB standard on all new vehicles by September of 2022 to make roadways safer.

How do limiters work?

The speed limiters will use road sign recognition or data from navigation maps to warn the driver about the current speed limit. It will notify drivers if they are exceeding the speed limit. This technology is already offered on many new vehicles, but the EU will make it standard on every vehicle.

Engine power will be limited to match the speed limit of a road that the vehicle is traveling on to prevent drivers from speeding. It will be possible to override the system by pushing hard on the throttle, but the system will be engaged every time the vehicle is started.

Other safety technologies that are required include distracted or drowsy driver attention warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, backup cameras, and an improved event data recorder to store information before an accident.

The rules still need to be formally approved by the EU parliament later this year. During the EU Commission’s announcement, they shared that it expected the required safety technologies to prevent about 25,000 deaths and 140,000 injuries on the road between 2022 and 2038. New vehicles will need to implement the technology by May 2022, and existing vehicle models have until May 2024 to add it.

Will safety rules become stricter?

A majority of automakers are moving toward increasing safety standards with the development of new technologies. While the speed limiters can be ignored by pressing the throttle harder, they may become more strict in the future.

If the driver continues to speed for several seconds, the system will provide audio warnings. A visual display will also be seen until the vehicle operates under the speed limit again. While the limiters will come with an on and off switch at first, later systems could become stricter.

This means that in the future, a more permanent system that reduces engine power could become mandatory. But public acceptance may be necessary for the introduction of these rules. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

Shopping for your next car? Buying new isn’t your only option. In fact, the used car market is stock full of options. Whether you’re in the market for a spacious SUV for a versatile truck, Autotrader reports there’s likely a used car, truck, or SUV out there for you. And if you need a headstart shopping for a used car? Consider shopping Autotrader’s picks of the best used cars of 2021. Let’s find out what their top picks are.

The 2015-2020 Jeep Wrangler is one of the best used cars

There’s a lot to like about the 2015-2020 Jeep Wrangler, especially if you’re in the market for a used SUV that can spend a day at the trails. In fact, Autotrader reports that the 2015-2020 Jeep Wrangler is one of the best used cars of 2021. However, for the most reliable used Jeep Wrangler, consider setting your sights on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler.

While earlier model years offer the same off-road chops that the Wrangler is known for, Consumer Reports’ data shows that older Jeep Wrangler models struggle with reliability. Take, for example, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler, which Consumer Reports gave a one out of five reliability rating. Fortunately, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler was able to secure a four out of five reliability rating.

Pick the 2017-2020 Honda CR-V for a fuel-efficient used SUV

The Jeep Wrangler isn’t the only used SUV that found itself included in Autotrader’s list of the best used cars. Autotrader also highlighted the Honda CR-V. Though, that should come as no surprise. The Honda CR-V consistently ranks at the top of its class and is known for being as spacious as it is fuel-efficient.

As a matter of fact, Autotrader reports that the Honda CR-V offers up more interior space than many other vehicles in its class. And when it comes to fuel efficiency? The EPA reports that the 2020 model delivers an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Shop for an older used Honda CR-V, and you can expect it to be similarly fuel-efficient.

The 2016-2020 Ford F-150 is a bestselling used truck

There’s no denying that the Ford F-150 is a popular pick among truck shoppers. Autotrader even included the 2016-2020 Ford F-150 among its picks of the best used cars of 2021. “This full-size pickup captures everything that truck buyers want with capabilities that are ready for everything from daily duty at the worksite to a weekend at the lake,” Autotrader explained. The organization isn’t wrong either.

The Ford F-150 is the kind of used truck that aims to please in far more ways than one. It’s not only available in multiple configurations but can also be had with a long list of enticing features, including FordPass Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi, SYNC 3 with navigation, and a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and trailer tow monitoring. Whether you’re in the market for a work truck or a family-friendly pickup, you can’t go wrong with this iconic American pickup.

Consider the 2017-2020 Ford Mustang for a used sports car

“The Ford Mustang is an iconic car not only for its style and performance but for its tremendous value,” reports Autotrader. That’s especially true when it comes to shopping for a used Ford Mustang, one of the best used cars of 2021. For a budget-friendly used Ford Mustang, Autotrader suggests opting for a turbocharged EcoBoost model. But if your budget allows it? Treating yourself to a used V8-powered GT model will provide you with plenty of thrills.

As for how much you can expect to spend on a used Ford Mustang GT? Autotrader lists several used Ford Mustang GT models under $40,000. However, opting for a 2020 Ford Mustang GT will have you spending a tad bit more. While used car prices do vary, several 2020 models are listed for well over $40,000.

The 2016-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the best used car

When it came to choosing the best used car of 2021, Autotrader selected the 2016-2020 Chevrolet Silverado. According to the organization, the Silverado is a staple among its segment thanks to its “strong capability, famous dependability, and rugged aesthetic.” Autotrader isn’t wrong either. Opt for the 2020 Silverado, and this used truck will have you towing up to 13,400 pounds.

And when it comes to how reliable the Chevrolet Silverado is? RepairPal reports that the Silverado offers Above Average reliability. RepairPal added that this used truck has average ownership costs too. Unfortunately, repairs do tend to be more severe than average. The good news is that major repairs are uncommon for the Chevrolet Silverado.

Which used car is the best choice for you?

Shopping for a used car can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, with Autotrader’s picks of the best used cars of 2021 in hand, it doesn’t have to be. Instead, take a few of these used cars, trucks, and SUVs out for a test drive. After all, that is the easiest way to determine which used car is the best choice for you.
