ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides have made a huge resurgence during the COVID-19 lockdowns and into our current world. Sales screamed during the lockdown as people needed fun and socially distanced activities to keep sane. In particular, some places like Colorado are inundated with these off-road machines, and the locals aren’t pumped as more OHV rules aren’t followed as they pass through town.

While these smaller, more rural mountain towns happily welcome the tourism money, the residents of some small towns are mad that their once quiet town and wilderness are now buzzing with these ATVs and dirt bikes.

What is an OHV?

The technical term for the broad category that describes these types of vehicles is Off-Highway Vehicles or OHVs. Colorado isn’t the only place where OHVs are popular, but it is a massively popular outdoor activity for the region. The popularity is less of a problem so much as how many people aren’t following the OHV rules.

According to The Drive, many small-town Colorado residents complain about people riding dirt bikes and other types of ATVs ripping through residential areas. These vehicles aren’t often road legal for one. For two, certain dirt bikes and four-wheelers can be super loud and annoying. OHV rules are meant to keep riders as well as drivers and pedestrians safe.

Even still that is only one part of the issue. The other part that is harder to control is out in the wilderness, many people are reporting these vehicles raging out on other trails which can be annoying and even dangerous.

How can the ATV and dirt bike problem be addressed?

“In 2015, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife division that oversees OHV use counted 170,000 of the vehicles registered in the state,” Nancy Lofholm wrote for the Colorado Sun. “Last year, there were 203,873. Around 46,000 of those came from out of state.”

Ryan Dull is the Stewardship, and Outreach Specialist for the educational non-profit group Stay the Trail. Stay the Trail is dedicated to helping spread the word about safe and responsible OHV use in the state of Colorado. Dull admits that keeping everyone happy in this conversation is a tough balance to strike. He is trying to figure out ways to inform riders about the OHV rules and how better to enforce them.

Dull says that since this time last year, motorized recreation is up nearly 400 percent. Of course, a huge part of this resulted from people needing something to do that was safe and socially distant. There is also a larger trend of adventure motoring that has been happening for nearly 10 years now.

Dull is a Colorado resident and a dirt bike rider. He understands both sides of the argument well. He obviously loves riding trails as well as keeping his home peaceful, safe, and clean. His goal is to interact with as many riders and drivers as possible and help them to respect the trails better and ride fast, safely. He believes that teaching is the better approach to fixing the problem in a world that would rather reprimand.

In his own words: “The trails are shared with little kids, campers, equestrians, and pedestrians…  So getting out there and driving like it’s a no-rules track, drifting, and roosting is not good. If everyone drove considerately, it would be fine. If you had someone in your neighborhood just outside of your house doing doughnuts and revving their engine and screaming down the street, you’d have a problem with that too.”

R E S P E C T the OHV rules

Dull’s thoughts on the issue can be easily summed up by saying that they will have more fun overall if riders can ride more responsibly and respectfully in certain areas. The same goes for the locals who don’t ride. If they can be more respectful and understanding for the ATV and dirt bike riders, they may garner more respect and civility in return. A little respect goes a long way.

There are over 2,000 2019 and 2020 Silverado trucks still on dealer lots, in spite of the news of short supplies. But the catch is that they are all medium-duty trucks. Though it is not unusual for medium-duty trucks to sit on lots longer than Silverado 1500 trucks, these are languishing longer than in the past.

What is typical for Silverado trucks to be sitting on dealer’s lots

For regular vehicles, about 60 days is considered a normal time. This represents the amount of time from when it first goes onto the lot until it is sold. For Chevy, the Blazer has a 16-day supply, which signifies it is a hot-selling vehicle.

GM Authority first noted back in April that there were about 2,400 of both 2019 and 2020 medium-duty trucks. So that number has only been lowered by about 400 trucks. For comparison, 2021 Chevy medium-duty trucks at dealers right now are about 2,500 units.

While these numbers seem very low, Chevy doesn’t sell a lot of medium-duty trucks each year. You might be surprised to know that in 2020 there were only 7,419 Silverado medium-duty trucks sold. Granted, sales were down due to the pandemic. But that figure is fairly representative of the rate of medium-duty vehicles sold compared to other years.

Chevy doesn’t sell nearly as many Silverado medium-duty trucks as light- or heavy-duty versions

As an example, in the first quarter of 2021, there were almost 113,000 Silverado 1500 trucks sold. Heavy-duty sold almost 31,000. For medium-duty Silverados, only a bit over 1,000 found buyers.

One thing that could be slowing down medium-duty sales is engine availability. Only the 6.6-liter turbodiesel Duramax was available in the medium-duty trucks. However, this year Chevy has added the 6.6-liter V8 L8T gas engine. It is naturally aspirated and offers an alternative to diesel.

Especially in California, diesel engines are slowly being legislated out of use. Some older heavy-duty trucks are hard to sell within California. They need to be updated with more current emissions equipment that can be costly. Owners end up selling to buyers in neighboring Arizona or Nevada where emissions laws are less stringent.

Silverado medium-duty trucks are based on the previous K2 platform

So only offering diesel lowers sales in California. But there is another reason why these trucks may be slower sellers. They don’t feature the latest 2020 version of truck bodies. They instead are made from the earlier K2-based platform.

Since sales are low they are assembled by Navistar for Chevy. And they are for a very narrow segment that needs this style of a truck when a 1500 or heavy-duty version won’t work. Also, they are only available as chassis cabs so no pickup bed is available except for custom applications.

It is all a bit of a mish-mosh once one delves into the MD and HD GM lines. That is why there are salespeople versed in fleet sales to help wind a buyer through the different body styles and configurations.

From the outside, Formula 1 race cars and Indy race cars look pretty much the same. Of course, they do have their more obvious differences, and we know that they aren’t the same because they aren’t interchangeable between the sports. From the more basic to the more technical, there are a lot of differences between Formula 1 and Indy race cars than initially meet the eye.

They do have a lot in common, so from the perspective of someone less familiar with both sports, it is easy to see why many people may not realize just how different these two forms of race cars actually are. With similar shapes, each vehicle is designed for a single driver, and the vehicles look very distant from what we expect to see on the roads in real life. The large wheels at each four corner and striking aerodynamics set these cars apart from anything else in the world, but under the surface, they aren’t all that similar.

The basic, easy to see differences between Formula 1 and Indy race cars

While you may not notice it from their appearance on screen, Formula 1 race cars are larger and wider, with the standard being 5.5 meters in length by 2 meters in width — which we imagine makes for a rather tight compartment for the driver. Indycars, on the other hand, measure in at a slightly smaller 5.1 meters in length by 1.9 meters in width.

In the past seasons, Formula 1 added the requirement for the halo piece, a protective bar that sits in front of the driver to protect their head in case of debris or an accident. While this is a new concept for the motorsport that has already proven worthwhile, Indycars have been using a similar halo design that is built into the car’s body, but it also has one other key feature that makes it obviously different: the windscreen.

Different packages and options also set them apart

Both the Indycars and Formula 1 cars have similar shapes, with raised noses above the front lip for air, remarkably large wings, a slender and claustrophobic looking space for the driver, and rear-mounted engine placement. If you watch in between races and locations, you may notice that each car varies slightly in their aerodynamic packages, which is one major aspect that sets these two forms of race cars apart.

Indycars typically vary between two aerodynamic packages, which can be interchanged on each race car. You can tell them distinctly apart from Formula 1 cars because of the rear wheel guards and low engine covers. They are typically heavier overall, but not by a concerning amount.

Formula 1 race cars have more leniency in their changes from track to track and can tailor the vehicle’s aerodynamics package in many ways to make the car more suitable for the difference between each track.

Changes in the next season

Regulation boards for both Formula 1 and Indy racing have yet to disclose all of the major changes we will see next season, but it isn’t uncommon for major tweaks and changes to be made to the cars to improve both performance and safety. Overall, while the Formula 1 race cars and Indycars look similar at first glance, there are many distinguishing features that set them apart. From the more obvious differences such as size and presence of a windscreen to less noticeable nuances such as the aerodynamic packages, each car is designed for its motorsport alone.

The Genesis G90 has only been around since 2017, but so far the car hasn’t captured the attention of prospective car buyers and car enthusiasts like many would have thought. The 2021 G90 comes stacked with tons of standard features that other cars only offer in their highest trims, and it looks and feels more luxurious than other cars in its class. So why doesn’t it have the same sales figures as other large luxury vehicles?

Learn more about the 2021 Genesis G90, its family-friendly design, and its disappointingly low sales figures over the years.

An overview of the 2021 Genesis G90

The 2021 Genesis G90 is considered a large luxury car by most people’s standards, which is a competitive class to be in. Other comparable cars include the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, and the Lexus LS 500. Despite the stiff competition, the Genesis G90 provides enough features to still stand out in the pack.

Because the G90 is considered a luxury vehicle, it comes with a luxury price tag of $72,950 to start. This is one of the highest prices for its class, but this “base” trim is still fully loaded. This is a much different model than other cars, luxury or standard, that have a base model but offer various trims with more advanced features for thousands of extra dollars. This isn’t the case with the 2021 G90, where the only optional upgrade you can purchase is all-wheel drive for an extra $2,500.

For some families this is a large investment in a vehicle, but many families find that the Genesis G90 is worth every penny.

Luxury for the whole family

Many people don’t think of luxury as being synonymous with family-friendly, but the 2021 Genesis G90 manages to provide an excellent balance between the two. This vehicle seats five, and the reviewers at U.S. News were particularly impressed by just how comfortable each seat is.

Not only does the driver’s seat have 22-way power adjustments to help with posture, but the back seat also provides enough room for tall individuals to be exceptionally comfortable.

Good Housekeeping also named this car the best luxury sedan on their list of The Best New Family Cars of 2021, mostly thanks to its generous warranty, plush seating, and easy-to-use infotainment center. As far as infotainment goes, you won’t be left wanting in the G90.

This vehicle comes standard with the basics like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a surround-sound stereo, wireless device charging, tri-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, remote start, interior ambient lighting, and so much more.

The G90 is considered family-friendly partially because it has easily accessible child car seat latches, but also because its standard safety features list is a mile long. It has basic safety features like a rear camera and blind-spot monitoring, but it also comes standard with automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, lane keep assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and nearly anything else you can think of.

This car was also given the highest honor possible from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the Top Safety Pick+ designation, because of its impressive crash test results and standard safety features.

Despite its benefits, the Genesis G90 hasn’t sold well

With a features list as long as the Genesis G90, one would expect it to sell like hotcakes, right? Unfortunately, the G90 has had very disappointing sales figures since it was first introduced in 2016. According to GoodCarBadCar, the G90 has never exceeded 4,500 sales in a year, and its sales figures usually hover around 2,200. Those low sales figures are pretty heartbreaking, as this car has so much to offer but hasn’t received the recognition or esteem it deserves yet.

Interestingly, MotorAuthority recently released some spy shots that make it appear the 2022 Genesis G90 will be fully redesigned, which may help get more people on the Genesis G90 bandwagon.
