Air-cooled Porsche 911s have become quite collectible over the past several years, with rising demand and high values to match. Debuting in 1989, the 964 chassis introduced mechanical improvements to the suspension, along with smoother body styling for ’90s buyers. With a healthy mix of vintage 911 and modern updates, this series is an appealing prospect for many Porsche enthusiasts.

At the top echelon of 964 hierarchy is the 911 Turbo, with a widened body and seriously boosted 3.6-liter flat-six motor. They were never common in the first place, so even fair-condition examples can top $100,000 per Hagerty (as of this writing). However, one very special and exclusive 964 build recently brought far more on a UK-based internet auction site called Collecting Cars.

This unassuming Porsche 911 Turbo is truly one of a kind

From the time it was ordered, this 911 Turbo was destined to stand out, due to its unique options list and a very prestigious original owner. The Sultan of Brunei is a renowned car enthusiast and ordered this 964 from the factory in Horizon Blue Metallic with Marine Blue interior. As if the standard Turbo’s 355 hp wasn’t enough, he also chose the rare X88 powertrain upgrade, which cranked horsepower up to 380 hp. Reportedly, it’s the only 964 Turbo ever produced with these exact options and colors.

After serving its royal duties in Southeast Asia, the car was transported to the UK in 2003, where it was taken in by another famous owner. According to Collecting Cars, it was owned up until the recent auction by Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button. Amazingly, despite being 27 years old, this 911 has only covered 19,283 total miles since new.

Aside from small stone chips and minor seat wear, this Porsche 911 appears to be in excellent condition. Unsurprisingly, with such distinctive provenance and specifications, it also attracted strong interest when listed with Collecting Cars. By the time it sold on Sept. 2, 2021, the 964 Turbo had collected 99 bids from potential buyers, with a final bid of £317,464 pounds sterling. With the exchange rate applicable at the time of this writing, that equates to just over $439,000.

Chris Harris explains what it’s like to drive this incredibly rare 911 Turbo

Part of the allure of an air-cooled Porsche 911 is a driving experience unlike any other. As explained by Chris Harris in the video, power is ample but delivery is old-school and laggy. The engine sound is also rather subdued compared to some modern sports vehicles. That said, the bassy engine note of the 964 generation flat-sixes remains and is accentuated nicely by the X88 quad-tip exhaust.

Final thoughts

From the road, it would take a truly discerning mind and set of eyes to realize just how exclusive and valuable this 911 Turbo is. Most would dismiss it as just another old Porsche. But the values on air-cooled 911s remain solid in general, and incredibly strong in this case, because that’s part of the charm. Cars that are truly unique and fun, without being over-the-top in the styling department, are becoming harder and harder to find.

The Ford Edge and luxury equivalent Lincoln Nautilus may cease production in 2023. The vehicles have long been a staple of the Ford and Lincoln CUV lineups, but the Edge hasn’t seen much updating. The Nautilus, formerly known as the Lincoln MKX, received a completely new look in 2019 along with the name change. The redesigned Nautilus may not be around much longer, so buyers should act fast as there may be only a few years remaining.

Why are the Edge and Nautilus rumored to die?

The Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus are rumored to die in 2023 if this automotive news report is accurate, which is not confirmed by Ford. Due to both vehicles being built at the Oakville Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada to make space for EV production, the two CUVs will be discontinued. With the Escape and the release of the Bronco Sport, Ford can feel more comfortable with discontinuing the Edge. The same goes for the Nautilus, which leaves behind the Aviator and Corsair in the Lincoln lineup of CUVs.

The Ford Edge began production in 2006, and its first model year was 2007. Since then, it has gone through plenty of small changes, but none that really redefined the body or look. It received its name from a trim package for the original Ford Ranger. The Edge shares its underpinnings with the Ford Fusion. The first generation of the vehicle was also produced as the Mazda CX-9. It sold 130,125 units in 2007 and has stayed in that range consistently since then.

The 2020 Ford Edge sold 108,886 units, according to goodcarbadcar.net. The Edge hasn’t received a redesign since 2015 when the second generation started production. Since then it has added SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, the ST-Line trim, and most recently an upgraded 12-inch touch screen infotainment system.

Lincoln Nautilus

Originally named the Lincoln MKX, the Nautilus began production during the same year as the Ford Edge. Part of the Lincoln lineup of “MK” named vehicles, the “X” stood for crossover. The Nautilus (MKX at the time) was Lincoln’s first-ever crossover. In 2018 Lincoln began moving away from the “MK” branding for their models. Starting by changing the MKX to the Nautilus.

Most recently, the 2021 Nautilus got an interior redesign. Lincoln added a 13.2-inch infotainment screen as well as more luxurious materials across the front, surrounding the all-new dashboard. Powered by Ford’s new Sync 4, it now has wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, and allows drivers to use their phone as the key. For a CUV with only a few years remaining, those are a lot of nice updates.

What will replace the Edge and Nautilus?

The CUVs in the Ford and Lincoln lineups need replacements but will Escape, Bronco Sport, Aviator, and Corsair be the answer? Or is Ford going EV with their crossovers? The Oakville Assembly plant will produce the Ford Mustang Mach-E, so could new EV CUVs be next?

Automakers are fully committing to going electric this year, most recently Genesis announcing its 2025 all-EV lineup. If the rumor of Edge and Nautilus discontinuation turns out to be true, could there be more Ford EV announcements coming soon? Maybe an all-electric Edge redesign is in the works for post-2023. Until Ford makes an official announcement we can’t know for sure if the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus will die. Though usually where there’s smoke, there’s an all-new electric crossover.

To activate the electric parking brake, pull up the “P” button on the center console. To release the electric parking brake, turn on the ignition, put your foot on the brake pedal, and push the “P” button down.

Another advantage of the electric parking brake in the Mach-E is its drive-away release feature. This barge of a car just sold for over $98,500 this week. What looks like a nicely maintained 1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible is something more. It is an essentially new Grand Ville, with incredibly only 1,500 miles on the ticker. That’s equal to around 32 miles a year if you’re keeping score.

This Pontiac Grand Ville even has that new car smell

1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible | eBay

Landing on eBay last week, the owner goes so far as to say it even comes with that new car smell. And why not? It is basically brand-new. Everything looks minty fresh from the white top and interior to the paint and details.

Whoever ordered this 1975 convertible loaded it with options. Air conditioning, power windows, and locks, six-way power seats, cruise control, remote exterior mirrors, tilt wheel, headlamp warning buzzer, clock, and AM/FM radio. Though virtually all of these options have become standard over the decades, that was not the case in 1975.

A 455 ci V8 powers the large Pontiac

For power, the Grand Ville has a 455 ci monster V8. It only punched out 200 hp with all of the smog control and timing retarded from the factory, but it was huge in cubic inches. Hooked to the 455 are a three-speed Turbo automatic transmission, a Safe-T-Track positraction rear end, and power front disc brakes.

These large barge cruisers were not Camaro- or Mustang-quick, but the huge cubes helped launch the Grand Ville to an 18.5 second ET in the quarter-mile. From our 2021 perspective that seems like you could beat that running with tennis shoes. But for an almost 5,000 lb car in those smog-choked days, that wasn’t terrible.

This was the last large convertible Pontiac ever made

1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible rear 3/4 view
1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible | eBay

This was the last B-body convertible that Pontiac made. They were distinguished from earlier convertibles mostly by those new square headlights. Only the E-body Cadillac Eldorado convertible went into the 1976 model year. Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick had all dropped their big convertibles by 1976.

So what makes these 1975 ‘verts more collectible is that they were the last ones, and are distinguished by the one-year-only square headlights. And what makes this one worth more is undoubtedly the hyper-low mileage.

To get ready for the sale the owner replaced the checking tires, did a fluids change, and replaced both the radiator and heater cores. A new battery and some other small items were also added to bring the Pontiac up to driving condition.

But is it worth $100,000 and will it ever be driven?

1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible
1975 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible | eBay

But whether the convertible is worth $100,000 is the question. Normally, a low-mile older car would be a weekend cruiser or frequent car show participant. But would you drive your super-low mile Pontiac Grand Ville? What makes it intrinsically more valuable you’ll chip away at if you do. So, is this nothing more than a big red and white doorstop?

It’s hard to call this, but we do like seeing these big barges in such pristine condition. Restoring one gets expensive, and we doubt you could have a shop replicate this for the money. And even so, it still wouldn’t be factory fresh like this one. Will it get driven, or will it go into someone’s bonus room as a huge monument to the fading glory days of Detroit?
