Some of the worst car accidents on American roads involve deer collisions. Thousands of deer-related car crashes happen every year, causing damage, injuries, and even deaths. And though some products claim to enhance car safety concerning deer, nothing has proven effective yet.

However, a recent report breaks down one of the most effective means of preventing these collisions. And it comes from a highly unexpected source.

How many car collisions with deer happen annually?

The numbers don’t lie. Deer-vehicle collisions are a huge headache, and they happen far more frequently than anyone might expect. In fact, HealthResearchFunding.org reports about 1.5 million car accidents involving deer annually, with an average of 150 human fatalities each year. Furthermore, the cost of these collisions exceeds $1 billion annually, meaning thousands of people face car repairs every year after encountering rogue deer.

Many related car collisions happen in the early morning or late evening when the woodland creatures tend to be the most active. But crashes can happen anytime and in a split second because these animals tend to dash across roads when they’re on the move. So the best way to avoid these accidents is to be as attentive as possible while at the wheel, never taking your eyes off the road, and never texting while driving.

Still, some experts claim at least one accessory can help prevent these collisions.

Do deer whistles prevent accidents?

Deer whistles are small devices that attach to a vehicle’s grille or hood. They make noise when the car travels between 30 and 35 mph, emitting a whistle that deer can hear. In theory, the high-pitched sound startles the animal, making it pause to consider its surroundings — and potentially stopping it from dashing across the road.

However, a recent class-action lawsuit slams deer whistles as a sham. It alleges consumers have purchased these products only to find them ineffective in preventing collisions. Other critics have called out deer whistles for frightening the animals into running rather than startling them into stunned submission.

So, for now, it seems deer whistles aren’t proven to deter dashing deer. However, another method might work.

A natural predator could be the key to preventing these crashes

Some might call the deer whistle a sham, but nature may have provided a much more effective means of keeping these creatures away from roads. According to The Atlantic, wolves can reduce the number of deer-vehicle collisions. Natural-resource economist Jennifer Raynor claims that “some lives are saved, some injuries are prevented, and a huge amount of damage and time [is] saved by having wolves present.”

Raynor points to her research in Wisconsin, which shows wolves help keep deer away from cars by eating or intimidating them, thereby reducing the number of collisions by a quarter. In addition, Raynor notes that by introducing wolves into landscapes with higher numbers of such car accidents, the predators could reduce the nearby deer population over time.

Certainly, it’s a solution that will require time and additional research. But for people who’ve experienced deer-involved car crashes, it’s an avenue worth exploring.

You may think that a big truck is going to be pretty safe, and that there’s little difference between two pickups. You’d be wrong. Every year the IIHS tests a variety of vehicles, and we can look at the results to weigh one against the other. Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra safer than the 2021 Dodge Ram 1500? Or is it the other way around? Let’s take a look.

2021 Toyota Tundra | Toyota

The 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick

An IIHS Top Safety Pick is awarded to a vehicle which gets good ratings in the driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front crash ratings, and moderate overlap front crash ratings. A vehicle must also get a good rating in the side crash tests, roof strength and head restraint tests.

A vehicle must also get a superior or advanced rating for front crash prevention in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests and have acceptable or good headlights available.

The 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 got a good rating in each of these tests. The IIHS Top Safety Pick applies only to the large, crew cab Dodge Ram pickups with optional crash prevention and certain headlights. In fact, all IIHS crash tests typically apply to certain levels and trims, so know what you’re looking at.

Small overlap front tests were better in the Dodge Ram

The overall evaluation of the small overlap front: passenger side tests for the Dodge Ram 1500 was good, but the structure and safety cage was only acceptable.

The 2021 Toyota Tundra got a marginal in its small overlap front: driver side test. This includes a marginal for its structure and safety cage, but good in most of the driver injury measures except for the lower leg/foot, which got a poor score.

The small overlap front: passenger tests were even worse. The overall rating for this was poor. This included a poor rating for structure and safety cage, and a good for the passenger injury measures: head/neck and chest. However, the passenger injury measure: hip/thigh was marginal, and the lower leg/foot was poor. Passenger restraints and dummy kinematics were just adequate.

How were the moderate overlap tests for the Dodge Ram and the Toyota Tundra?

To conduct the moderate overlap frontal test, the IIHS simulates a situation like what would happen if two same-size vehicles hit each other at just under 40 mph. Forty percent of the width of the vehicle strikes an aluminum honeycomb barrier on the driver side.

The 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 scored a good rating in the moderate overlap tests. The Toyota Tundra, on the other hand, got a good rating in every subcategory other than leg/foot, right getting a good score. Only the leg/foot, right side got a marginal score.

How was the roof strength, head restraints and seats?

The 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 did much better than the 2021 Toyota Tundra in these tests. The Ram scored a good result for roof strength. It also got good scores in the overall evaluation for power leather seat, as well as a good dynamic rating and seat/head restraint geometry.

On the other hand, the Toyota Tundra’s roof strength was just adequate. The head restraints and seat ratings were all good for the power cloth seat.

How did the Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra do in crash prevention?

The Ram 1500 scored a superior rating in the overall vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation with the optional Advanced Safety Group or Level 1 Safety Group. In both the 12 mph and 25 mph IIHS test, the Ram 1500 was able to avoid a collision.

The Ram 1500 scored advanced and in the 12 mph crossing child test, the Ram 1500 avoided a collision. In the 25 mph test, the speed was reduced by 21%.

In the crossing adult 12 mph and 25 mph tests, the Ram was able to avoid a collision. It also avoided a collision in the parallel adult 25 mph test. However, in the 37 mph, the Ram 1500 didn’t slow down. A warning was issued 2.4 seconds before the collision.

In front crash prevention: vehicle to vehicle, the Tundra had a standard pre-collision system and pedestrian detection. It avoided a collision in both the 12 mph and 25 mph IIHS tests.

The headlights in the Toyota Tundra received a marginal score. The child seat anchors were just adequate. The IIHS found them hard to find and too deep in the seats. This can be a problem because car seat safety is partially dependent on being able to correctly install the car seat.

Overall, is the Toyota Tundra safer than the Dodge Ram? No. The 2021 Dodge Ram 1500s better crash test ratings and IIHS Top Safety Pick make it a better choice than the 2021 Toyota Tundra. When safety is your priority, choose the Dodge.

When the 2022 Ford Maverick comes out it will change the dynamic of pickup trucks. That’s because it comes in the base form at under $20,000 including destination charges. But what about now? The Maverick won’t be out until later in 2022. What’s the cheapest new pickup you can buy right now? That would be the Toyota Tacoma.

How do you get the base Toyota Tacoma?

2021 base Toyota Tacoma pickup | Toyota

But you have a bit of work getting to that price. That’s because you need to know about the “Utility Package.” When you order the Utility Package for your Access Cab Tacoma it eliminates some appointments that will bring the price down to a comfortable $25,780.

Here’s what gets pitched when the Utility Package is part of your Toyota Tacoma. The rear seats, rear speakers, rear cupholders, rear window vent, and the intermittent wiper function. What it adds are black bumpers, door handles, and mirror caps.

So if you don’t plan on hauling comrades or kiddies in the back you’re golden. Besides the rather stripped condition of your new Tacoma, you are getting the six-foot bed and the 159 hp banger. This will give you a tow rating of only 3,500 lbs. So this is a truck mostly for commercial buyers looking for something to do light hauling on the cheap.

There are tradeoffs between a Ford Maverick and the base Tacoma

Contrast this to the 2022 Maverick. Its bed is only 4.5-feet. But you get a fully appointed back seat area. Power-wise there’s a hybrid configuration with 191 hp. Towing is limited to only 2,000 lbs, but you’re good for 37 mpg. Oh, and it’s front-wheel-drive, as opposed to the Taco’s rear-wheel setup.

Or, if you don’t need new you can opt for the myriad of used trucks from one end of the spectrum to the other. Only your needs and pocketbook are your guardrails. But they won’t be new.

If you’re still stuck on new there is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. It will be more like the Maverick. But, there is no hybrid option. It will be available sooner; like in a couple of months. But as of this time, we still don’t know the price. If it falls somewhere between the Maverick and Tacoma then it is a viable option in our scenario here.

If you can wait, there will even be more choices

Everything is a tradeoff as you can see. But choices are what life is all about and right now there is more every day. We expect the Maverick will see some reaction from GM. And Ram already has the “700” in Latin America.

The 700 would be an excellent counterpart to the Maverick and Tacoma. And it comes in both single and double cab configurations. Will Stellantis be bringing it across the border? The US tariff situation says it probably won’t. But the point is that there will be even more pickup choices as we hit the middle of the decade.

If you’re shopping for a vehicle with a comfortable, spacious interior, don’t assume you’ll have to buy an SUV. Several sedans, including the Dodge Charger, offer plenty of room, upscale vibes, and a fun drive. Plus, in most situations, a sedan will save you money.

Crossover SUVs are just taller cars, but many can’t offer performance-oriented sedans’ athleticism. Also, SUVs generally aren’t as fuel-efficient as sedans and have a higher risk of rollovers. So, with all of that in mind, maybe you’ll want to consider a sedan like the 2021 Dodge Charger.

It’s what’s inside the Dodge Charger that counts

The Dodge Charger is an iconic muscle car with a reputation for power. However, you might not know it boasts a spacious cabin. According to U.S. News, the 2021 model boasts 41.8 inches of legroom in the front and 40.1 inches in the rear, holding its own against luxury sedans.

It can also seat up to five adults comfortably, even if they’re on the tall side. And you can reasonably seat three people in the backseat for shorter trips.

The Charger has average cargo capacity for its segment, with 16.5 cubic feet in the trunk. You can fold down the rear seats for extra space when you need it to haul larger items for great convenience.

The 2021 Dodge Charger’s technology and interior design

Sure, the Dodge Charger isn’t as upscale as luxury sedans, but its cabin uses quality materials. It doesn’t have the most modern interior design, but it’s functional.

Plus, the Uconnect infotainment system is intuitive and features a user-friendly touchscreen. The menus are simple, and physical buttons and knobs help for easy adjustments. Expect a 7.0-inch standard touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, four USB ports, satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system.

An 8.4-inch touchscreen is available, as are a six- or nine-speaker Alpine sound system or a 19-speaker Harman Kardon system. You can get HD Radio, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, too. Also available are dual-zone automatic climate control and a sunroof.

Several Dodge Charger models to choose from

The 2021 Dodge Charger comes in six trim levels — SXT, GT, R/T, Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, and SRT Hellcat Redeye — U.S. News reports. Each offers progressively more power and features.

SXT

The base-model SXT starts at $30,245 and features a V6 engine producing 292 hp. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive standard, but all-wheel drive is available. It offers more than enough muscle for most car lovers, plus plenty of power and a slew of great features. They include rear parking sensors and power-adjustable front seats.

GT

Starting at $32,245, the GT model is another great choice. It and the SXT are the only trims with available all-wheel drive. The GT’s V6 makes 300 hp and adds the 8.4-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD Radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also adds more aggressive styling cues and 20-inch wheels.

R/T

The R/T and higher trim levels are high-performance cars with big V8 engines for enhanced acceleration and power. The R/T starts at $37,245 and packs a Hemi V8 putting out 370 hp. It’s rear-wheel drive with all the GT standard features and few extras.

Scat Pack

Scat Pack models start at $41,920 and offer a Widebody version too. Its V8 makes 485 hp and adds some great performance features. For example, you get launch control with line lock modes, an upgraded cooling system, and a stiffer suspension. You also get high-performance Brembo brakes, a limited-slip rear differential, and a heated steering wheel and front seats.

SRT Hellcat

The popular SRT Hellcat starts at $72,345 is quite a leap in price. For that, you get a supercharged V8 producing 717 hp. Along with sporting widebody fenders, it comes with blind-spot monitoring, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and leather upholstery. The only drawback is that this model doesn’t offer some of the better active safety features, like adaptive cruise control and forward-collision alerts.

SRT Hellcat Redeye

The top-trim SRT Hellcat Redeye starts at an eye-popping $80,945. But aside from packing a supercharged Hemi V8 harnessing a whopping 797 hp, this model is the same as the regular SRT Hellcat.

Overall, with a roomy, comfortable cabin and varying levels of power to pair with solid handling, the 2021 Dodge Charger is a viable alternative to a crossover SUV.
