If you are like many drivers, you probably think going a few miles an hour over the speed limit is not a big deal. Drive down any highway and you will see cars racing in the left lane. Is speeding dangerous? The IIHS says even modest speeding can be deadly.

How did the IIHS determine that speeding is dangerous?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent organization. The IIHS’ priorities include compiling data and sharing test results which inform legislation. They also conduct independent tests on vehicles to determine their safety. In this instance, the IIHS conducted a series of tests to examine whether slight speeding was as dangerous as going way over the speed limit.

The IIHS collaborated with AAA and Humanetics, a company which makes crash test dummies. The tests were run by Calspan Corporation. They tested three 2010 Honda CR-Vs at three different speeds: 40 mph, 50 mph, and 56 mph. They found that the risk of death increased significantly, even from modest speeding. 

During the 40 mph, the test found that there was minimal intrusion into the cab of the CR-V. This means fewer objects become a danger to vehicle occupants. However, during the 50 mph test, the driver side door was noticeably damaged. So was the dashboard and foot area. 

Is even slight speeding dangerous? When the test was increased by just 6 mph to 56 mph, the CR-V cabin was “significantly compromised.” The dummies used in the tests had sensors which indicate how likely a serious injury would take place. The sensors in the 56 mph test registered severe neck injuries. There was also a high likelihood that the lower legs would have been broken. 

Both the 50 mph and 56 mph tests resulted in the dummy’s head going through the airbag. In both tests the dummy’s face smashed into the steering wheel. The dummy’s sensors showed a high likelihood of a significant brain injury in each of these crashes. 

Do high speed limits make speeding more dangerous?

56 mph was found to be fast enough to cause serious injury or even death, yet many people drive much faster than this on the highway. In addition to that, the IIHS notes that many drivers go faster than posted speed limits. Sometimes states will raise speed limits in accordance with travel speed. This doesn’t send the message that speeding is dangerous. A study performed in 2019 showed that doing this had led to 37,000 deaths. 

There are currently 41 states which allow speeds of 70 mph, and eight states which allow motorists to travel 80 mph on at least some roads. Because of the rise in deaths related to increasing the speed limit, both the IIHS and AAA have tried to get lawmakers to consider this when they are debating whether to raise the speed limit. 

As quoted by IIHS, Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety said, “A speeding driver may arrive at their destination a few minutes faster, but is the trade-off of getting severely injured or even losing one’s life worth it if a crash occurs?”

Would lowering the speed limit make motorists safer?

Yes, says Harkey. “Rather than raising speed limits, states should vigorously enforce the limits they have. This includes using proven countermeasures like high-visibility enforcement and carefully implemented speed-camera programs to consistently and equitably enforce speed limits 24/7.”

Will a safer vehicle negate the dangers of speeding?

No. Dr. David Harkey, president of the IIHS, said, “Higher speed limits cancel out the benefits of vehicle safety improvements like airbags and improved structural designs.” He went on to say, “The faster a driver is going before a crash, the less likely it is that they’ll be able to get down to a survivable speed even if they have a chance to brake before impact.”

Even if legislators don’t lower speed limits or enforce posted speed limits, there are things you can do to keep yourself and others safe. Driving a safe vehicle, wearing a seatbelt and correctly installing child seats and following traffic laws all reduce the likelihood of an accident. And if there’s anything to be learned from the IIHS study, it’s that maintaining a safe speed can be the difference between life and death.

Luxury cars are a segment known for higher prices. With cushier interior trim materials and premium features, a luxury car is generally considered to be more abundant in the way of creature comforts. In fact, for buyers that want a luxury vehicle but who aren’t trying to spend a six-figure sum, these are the cheapest luxury cars that are still worth buying according to Car and Driver. 

The 2021 Infiniti Q50 starts at $37,625

The 2021 Infiniti Q50 is a luxury car made by Nissan’s luxury segment––Infiniti. Car and Driver says that “the Q50 doesn’t boast the sportiest attributes. However, it’s offered with a 300 hp twin-turbo V6 engine as standard equipment. 

There’s also an available 400 hp option. The Infiniti Q50 provides a nice ride. That said, it’s also noted that the interior lacks luxury character and refinement. This model has 13 cubic feet of cargo space. One drawback is that the dual-infotainment screen isn’t the most user friendly by any means. 

The 2021 Genesis G70 starts at $37,025

Poised against the BMW 3-Series, the 2021 Genesis G70 is one of the cheapest luxury cars that’s worth buying. According to Car and Driver, the “new sedan’s performance and cheap base price make it a deadly enemy.” The G70 also comes with either a manual or automatic transmission. 

For a few thousand less than $40,000 buyers get 11 cubic feet of cargo space. Plus, there are two engine options. First, the standard 252 hp turbocharged 2.0 liter inline-four. In addition, there’s an available 365 hp twin-turbocharged 3.3 liter V6. Car and Driver notes that the 2021 G70 has a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  

The 2021 BMW 2-Series starts at $36,895

Car and Driver also points out the 2021 BMW 2-Series as one of the cheapest luxury cars that’s worth checking out. This one earned praise like “one of the most entertaining to drive,” and offers 10-14 cubic feet of cargo space depending on the specific model. It’s also pointed out that the 2-Series isn’t the cheapest model in BMW’s lineup.  

The 2021 BMW 2-Series base model, the 230i, gets turbocharged power to the rear wheels from a 248 hp 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is what Car and Driver calls “eager and willing.” Plus, there’s an available 335 hp turbocharged 3.0 liter inline-six. 

The 2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe starts at $36,695

“The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is now part of this list thanks to a new front-wheel drive powertrain which comes standard on the sedan. This new option cuts the price of the 2-Series Gran Coupe by $2000”

Buyers of both the all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive models will end up with a 2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe equipped with a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder. This engine gets up to 228 hp. 

This is one on the list of the cheapest luxury cars that are worth buying, offering superior cargo space of 15 cubic feet. Interestingly, the 2021 2-Series Gran Coupe is an entirely different car than the 2-Series convertible or coupe. It’s a sedan that actually shares a platform with the Mini.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-class starts at $34,700

With a 188 hp turbocharged 2.0 liter inline-four and nine cubic feet of cargo space, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is the most petite Benz in the current lineup. In addition to that, the A-Class is also the least expensive Mercedes-Benz model. 

Car and Driver appreciates the A-Class because it “truly feels like a Mercedes,” unlike the manufacturer’s previous go at a budget friendly sedan with the CLA-Class. Unlike the CLA-Class, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class offers a refined cabin in addition to an updated infotainment system. 

The 2021 Cadillac CT4 starts at $34,390

This is Cadillac’s entry-level sedan. Car and Driver reports that the 2021 Cadillac CT4 features “sharp exterior styling.” The CT4 has 11 cubic feet of cargo space and two engine options. 

Standard power comes from a 237 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four. An upgrade gives buyers a 307 hp turbocharged 2.7 liter version. However, Car and Driver also points out that the interior materials are lacking in terms of luxury appointments when compared to most others in the segment. 

The 2021 Acura ILX starts at $27,125

This is the cheapest luxury car on Car and Driver’s list of budget luxury vehicles that deserve attention. The 2021 Acura ILX hasn’t really changed for 2021. That said, the exterior design has commendable aesthetic appeal. 

The 2021 Acura ILX has 12 cubic feet of cargo space and a 201 hp 2.4 liter inline-four. Car and Driver describes its performance as “lackluster.” However, the price still makes the smallest Acura model a luxury sedan well worth some consideration. 

The cheapest luxury cars that Car and Driver recommends

Not every luxury sedan has to have a massive sticker price. All of these models are great examples of accessible luxury for a price that many households can actually afford. In fact, all of these models are worth looking into for buyers that want a luxury car but don’t want to spend more than about $40,000.

2021 Nissan Rogue and Pathfinder buyers will be treated to an all-new interior sound with some impressive nerdy roots. Legendary video game company Bandai Namco, best known for titles like Pac Man, was tapped to help design the new soundscape. Together the two companies worked to give the brand’s sound distinct character and personality. This isn’t the first time Nissan has tipped its hat to nerd culture, and it will likely not be the last.

Nissan is known for its fandoms

Nerdy is a word often used to describe passionate niche hobbies and fandoms. Despite negative connotations in the past, the word is now synonymous with a list of positive characteristics. Something is nerdy if it’s esoteric, interesting, clever, or informative. Nissan has joined in on the celebration of the term and enthusiastically backed several fandom projects. The brand is popular with younger customers who appreciate these playful gestures.

In 2016 Nissan delighted Star Wars fans with a limited edition Star Wars Rogue SUV. The Star Wars edition was in celebration of the theatrical release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This limited edition featured special badging and stylized trim. Buyers were also treated to an exclusive Death Trooper helmet.

That same year Nissan reached out to fans during San Diego Comic-Con. The brand is known for its command of social media. During this heavily discussed event, Nissan asked drivers to share photos of their cars. A few winners would be chosen and redesigned, stylize after classic comic book art.

Executives at Nissan reached out to legendary video game company Bandai Namco to breathe new life into the brand’s sound. Nissan’s lead engineer for in-car information sound design Hiroyuki Suzuki said the brand is looking for a high-end sound that is emotional and informative.

Nissan reached out to Bandai Namco because its expertise in video game soundtrack creation translates perfectly to cars. In video games, alert sounds are used to inform players and get their attention without creating a distraction, just like the alerts in cars. Together the two companies combined their expertise to create a new sound palate for the Nissan brand. Once the full range of sounds was designed, several variations of each were created to convey varying levels of urgency.

Interior alerts are used to communicate with drivers without distracting them from the road. Examples of these are tones played while a vehicle is in reverse, a chime to alert that a door is ajar, or a beep to remind passengers to fasten their seatbelt. These sounds are often taken for granted and fade into the background. Nissan hopes to change all of that.

The brand chose to redesign its interior alert sounds to create a voice for the brand. Nissan wanted to give new models more character and personality. Soundscapes go a long way toward the creation of ambiance. This level of attention to detail is part of why the brand is so popular with thoughtful and tech-sensitive young buyers.

Fast, high-tech bikes might be exciting and flashy, but they’re not the best motorcycles for beginners. And even some seasoned riders might not be able to truly explore the limits of high-end sportbikes. But while affordable, entry-level models aren’t necessarily fast, in some ways, they’re more fun. And one of the best examples of this is the 2022 Honda Grom.

For 2022, the Honda Grom has a powertrain overhaul, a new look, and some extra tech

Looking at its specs on paper, the 2022 Honda Grom doesn’t appear to be significantly different than its immediate predecessor. However, although a few things carry over from last year’s model, the 2022 Grom features key updates in several areas.

One of the biggest changes is in the powertrain. True, as before, the 2022 Honda Grom has an air-cooled fuel-injected 125cc single-cylinder engine. But it’s not the same engine found in the 2021 Trail 125, Monkey, and Super Cub. The version in the 2022 Grom is Euro5 emissions-compliant and, with 10 hp and 8 lb-ft of torque, slightly more powerful, RideApart explains.

Also, the transmission has wider gear ratios and five gears, rather than four. Combined with a new rear sprocket, the 2022 bike tops out at 59 mph, up from 54 mph.

Other changes on the 2022 Honda Grom are similarly subtle. The fuel tank is slightly larger, and the engine trades its oil-spinner system for a filter to simplify oil changes, RevZilla notes. The bike’s seat height is still 30”, but the seat itself is flatter. And the 2022 Grom’s body panels are designed to be easily removed and swapped out.

The 2022 Honda Grom has the same braking and suspension hardware as the outgoing bike. And front-wheel ABS is still optional. But it benefits from a new inertial measurement unit. Plus, the 2022 Grom features a new LCD dash complete with a gear indicator.

Since its 2014 introduction, the Honda Grom has earned itself a dedicated fanbase and even racing series. That’s thanks to features like a low curb weight, small dimensions, affordable price, and approachable handling and power. And the 2022 bike is more of the same.

“The Grom is, in a word, rad,” RideApart says. Because it only weighs 231 pounds with ABS and has a low center of gravity, low-speed maneuvers are a cinch, RevZilla reports. And even on the stock tires, the 2022 Grom is great fun on a racetrack. It’s like a Miata, Jalopnik explains, in that maintaining momentum is the goal. Picking your lines and braking points carefully, sharpening your counter-steering technique, and so on. But because the bike is light, maneuverable, and approachable, you can attack corners with a great deal of confidence.

Larger riders may find the straight-line performance a bit lacking on the Grom. But long-term comfort isn’t an issue, RevZilla and RideApart note. And being able to use full throttle at road-legal speeds without feeling scared is its own kind of fun. The axiom of riding a slow bike fast being more enjoyable than a fast bike slow is in full effect with the Honda Grom.

Downsides? Besides the relative lack of speed, RideApart noted neutral could be difficult to find, though RevZilla had no such issue. The 2022 Grom also comes with a shift light that seems more inclined for fuel efficiency than acceleration. But overall, to quote RideApart, the Grom is simply “a fun, accessible, easy to live with bike.”

Should you buy one?

The 2022 Honda Grom starts at $3399 without ABS; the white-red-and-blue livery with gold highlights costs $3499. And an ABS-equipped Grom starts at $3599.

Smaller bikes like the Grom have their limitations. For example, if you need a motorcycle for highway commuting, you’ll need something with a larger engine. However, if you’re looking to get into riding, or rediscover its simple joys, the Grom is one of the best places to start.
