Honda may have just rewritten the rulebook for lightweight towable campers. We got an up-close look at the Honda Base Station Prototype at Honda’s R&D Center, and this sub-1,500-pound modular camper is designed to be towed by everything from a Honda CR-V to larger SUVs and even EVs. Built with Honda’s signature focus on reliability and smart packaging, the Base Station features a pop-up roof with seven feet of standing room, a modular interior and exterior panel system, lithium battery power, optional solar, and a setup time of about five minutes at camp.

What makes this a potential game-changer is Honda’s platform-style approach. Instead of locking buyers into one layout, the Base Station lets you swap kitchens, showers, storage, or open panels, depending on your trip, tool-free. It’s compact enough to fit in a standard garage, yet spacious enough to sleep a family of four. Pricing and final specs are still coming, but if Honda delivers this concept close to production, it could open camping to an entirely new group of SUV and EV owners.
