GM's Wild New 8-Speed Transmission "Fix" is Nuts?!
GM has issued an unusual new repair procedure for eight-speed automatic transmission shudder in the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Preliminary information bulletin PIP6127 changes what dealerships must do before replacing a torque converter under warranty. The procedure begins with changing the transmission fluid. If the shudder returns, the truck may require an extended road test and additional testing in manual seventh gear.
If the problem remains, the technician can move toward replacing the torque converter—but first, the dealership must contact GM’s Product Quality Center and receive authorization.
The bulletin covers:
2019–2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models with the 5.3-liter V8 or 2.7-liter Turbo
2023–2026 Silverado and Sierra models with the 2.7-liter Turbo
2023–2026 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models equipped with the 2.7-liter engine and eight-speed automatic
Why is GM adding another approval step? One possible explanation is that the company wants technicians to complete the entire diagnostic process before replacing expensive torque converters that may not solve the underlying shudder.
This is not a recall, and replacing torque converters isn’t a new repair. What’s new is the expanded procedure and the requirement to obtain corporate authorization before completing the warranty replacement.

Which 2021–2026 Ford F-150 engine is the most reliable—and which one should buyers approach more carefully?
In this video, Publisher Tim Esterdahl compares the engines offered in the current-generation Ford F-150 using recalls, technical service bulletins, reported problems and years of reliability coverage.
Engines discussed include:
3.3-liter Cyclone V6
5.0-liter Coyote V8
2.7-liter EcoBoost V6
3.5-liter EcoBoost V6
3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid
3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel
5.2-liter supercharged V8
The naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 isn’t automatically problem-free. Reported concerns include the familiar “typewriter tick,” VCT components, timing-system wear and coolant leaks involving plastic fittings.
The 2.7-liter EcoBoost has dealt with an intake-valve recall affecting certain 2021–2022 trucks, along with oil-pan leaks and spark-plug wear. Meanwhile, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost has a longer history involving cam phasers, timing components, coolant leaks, oil leaks and broken exhaust-manifold studs—although Ford has continued updating the engine over the years.
We also examine PowerBoost battery and electrical complaints, hybrid-system concerns and the limited reliability data available for the high-performance 5.2-liter V8.

Toyota technicians are using a plastic hammer, an accelerometer and diagnostic software to determine whether certain recalled Tundra engines need replacement.
Toyota calls it the V35A Crank Bearing Inspection. After preparing the engine, a technician mounts an accelerometer to the crankshaft bolt and strikes the pulley three times at a specified location. The measurements are sent to Toyota’s system, which returns one of two results: the engine passes, or the engine assembly must be replaced.
