Consumer Reports Picks Mazda CX-5, Avoids Jeep Compass

by Gabrielle DeSantis

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the favorite crossover SUVs on the market right now. While Consumer Reports loves the Mazda CX-5, it did not seem to love the Jeep Compass quite as much. How do the two cars compare?

Consumer Reports chose the 2021 Mazda CX-5 as one of the 10 most reliable cars for this year. It came in seconds on the list of Compact Sport Utility vehicles with an overall score of 83. Potential owners will be happy to know it scored a five out of five for predicted reliability and four out of five for predicted owner satisfaction.

CR notes that the 2021 CX-5 improved this year with ride comfort, interior quality, and noise isolation within the cabin. The 187-hp 2.5L four-cylinder has a six-speed transmission. The SUV gets around 24 miles per gallon overall.

The Mazda SUV is easy to drive and responsive, with an improved smooth ride even over the 2020 version. 73% of CX-5 owners say they would purchase the same car again.

The price of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is between $25,370 and $37,505. The estimated annual fuel cost is around $1,190.

Does the Jeep Compass have a lot of problems?

The 2021 Jeep Compass is still a solid car for those who are brand loyal. Consumer Reports gave the compass a score of 39 on the overall test. For the road test, it scored 56 out of 100. Still not a bad score. However, the predicted owner satisfaction came in at a one out of five. The predicted reliability was better, scoring two out of five.

The 2.4L engine gets 180 horsepower. It is offered in a six and nine-speed transmission. The Compass gets the same EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon overall. Where the CX-5 shined, the Compass fell short. Some of the “lows” listed include that this Jeep is slow, noisy, rough-riding, short on agility and the rear seat is uncomfortable. The highs? “The allure of the Jeep brand” and the controls are easy to use.

The Compass is priced between $24,495 and $31,395 with the same $1,190 estimated annual fuel cost.

Consumer Reports picks the Mazda SUV

While the two compact SUVs are similarly priced, the CX-5 seems like the better buy. Both are four-door SUVs with a variety of drivetrains offered, and both have room for five passengers. The horsepower and fuel economy are fairly similar as well.

The Mazda has forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection standard. It also has lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot warning. None of these features come standard in the Jeep. These features are optional but not included. Pedestrian detection is not optional.

From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), both the CX-5 and the Compass rated “good” for most crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the CX-5 more five-star ratings than the Compass. The Compass scored three stars for the rollover test, while the Mazda SUV scored four stars.

While Jeep lovers might be fine with the Compass, other drivers might find the lack of standard safety features a deterrent. Go for the Mazda otherwise.
