What is the most reliable heavy-duty truck you can buy today?
Publisher Tim Esterdahl ranks the Ford Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD and Ram HD using Pickup Truck + SUV Talk’s original reporting, NHTSA data, recalls, technical service bulletins and owner complaints.
The Ford Super Duty takes the top spot despite its recall history and lingering death-wobble complaints. Its current gas V-8 engines, 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel and 10-speed transmission present fewer unanswered catastrophic concerns than the alternatives.
The Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD follow closely behind. Their gas and Duramax diesel engines are proven, but recent valve-body problems involving certain diesel-powered trucks prevent them from taking first place.
The redesigned Ram HD finishes last, but that does not necessarily mean it is unreliable. Its high-output 6.7-liter Cummins and TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic are simply too new to have the same long-term record as the Ford and GM powertrains.
