The Toyota Supra is one of the most popular cars you see at tuner car shows and on the street, partly because of its role in pop culture and partly because of its performance capabilities and potential. Overall, the Toyota Supra became more popular than the brand may have originally anticipated, and none of us are complaining — except maybe about how the popularity of the car has kept the value and price up even decades later. The Supra was always designed to be something special, and with its Latin-based namesake, it did exactly what Toyota had hoped that it would.

If you refer to Toyota, you may notice that many of the model names have more meaning than you think. The MR2, for example, stands for mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, 2 seater — and while that model name is somewhat practical, other Toyota model names have a bit more meaning. The Prius, for example, got its name from the Latin word for “to go before,” and it isn’t that far off from the Toyota Supra. The Supra also got its name from a Latin root, and in Latin, the Toyota Supra means “to surpass” or “to go beyond,” which is exactly what the manufacturers aimed to do with this iconic car.

The Toyota Supra in pop culture

The Toyota Supra was designed to go beyond in performance and styling, but the car’s popularity was really highlighted by its starring role in the Fast and Furious franchise. The movies didn’t just show off the car’s styling as you see in movies like James Bond, which has overexaggerated the abilities of cars like the Lotus Esprit. The Toyota Supra, on the other hand, was highlighted for its styling and capable 2JZ engine that has established itself as a staple in the car community. While it was the most popular in the first movies that we released over a decade ago, the car is still popular, and the Fast and Furious franchise changed car shows forever.

The comeback of the classics

While it was cut from production for some time, the Toyota Supra was brought back into production only a few years ago, with a new design that has been somewhat controversial. The new Supra features a BMW drivetrain — which has lead to all of the annoying jokes about the new Toyota Supra actually just being a fancy BMW Z4 M40i but has distinct styling and impressive performance nonetheless. Regardless of any negative opinions, the car was a nostalgic throwback that has been popular — and it isn’t that uncommon to see them at car shows or meets. It no longer offers the 2JZ engine, but if YouTube history has taught us anything, it’s only a matter of time before a content creator makes that happen.

In the push for an electrified future for the automotive industry, much of the media attention is on exciting models like the Tesla Model S and Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, despite the lack of fanfare, the area that will have an even more significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and affecting our lives on a day-to-day basis is electric vehicle public transportation. This includes public school transportation.

The traditional yellow school bus has remained relatively the same over the years. However, with its new BEAST electric school bus, GreenPower aims to dramatically change the public school transportation system.

The BEAST is the nickname that GreenPower gives to its Battery Electric Automotive School Transportation school bus. It is powered by a 350 kW electric power. The battery in the BEAST has six total packs, with a capacity of 193.5 kWh. The range of the BEAST is 150 miles and its top speed is 68 mph. It can reach a full charge in eight hours using a standard charger. Using a DC fast charger, a full charge is completed in around four hours.

“The accelerated adoption of zero-emission school buses means a healthier and more sustainable environment for our children and communities. We are confident that the BEAST will drive the future of the all-electric school bus paradigm shift while providing parents the peace of mind knowing their children are safe and protected from diesel emissions and harmful noise pollution.”

– Fraser Atkinson, CEO of GreenPower

The GreenPower BEAST school bus can seat up to 91 people, including the driver. Like most other school buses, all of the seats in the BEAST are front-facing. There are 15 rows, with two benches for each row and three seats for each bench. The BEAST is ADA compliant for transporting individuals with special needs. For storage, the BEAST has a full pass-through cargo compartment.

The BEAST has a bulky width of 102 inches, which is the widest in the school bus industry. Its length is 40 feet, while its wheelbase is 240 inches. It has a gross vehicle weight rating of 42,990 pounds and can carry a payload of up to 13,790 pounds.

With its air ride suspension, the BEAST provides a smooth ride for its passengers. With its direct drive system, the BEAST has no transmission. It has an estimated 23 miles per gallon gasoline-equivalent. In comparison, a gasoline-powered school bus typically has a fuel economy of around 10 mpg.

When will the GreenPower BEAST school bus be available?

Orders for the GreenPower BEAST school bus can be made right now. Deliveries for the BEAST will start sometime within the next few weeks. GreenPower expects to have a surge in demand for the BEAST by the end of the year, with plans to ramp up production. This demand for all-electric school buses can partially be attributed to President Biden’s Federal Infrastructure Plan. The Infrastructure plan includes incentives and initiatives to encourage and support the use of electric vehicles.

Some people enjoy full-size RV campers for traveling around, but that does not apply here. The new Mercedes-Benz Citan is called a micro camper van and really can do it all. The small van segment is heating up with the addition of the Citan, and yes, we mean because of the kitchen.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan Tourer micro camper has a kitchen!

OK, it isn’t a full kitchen, but it’s a kitchenette all the same. Robb Reports says the Citan Tourer module was created by a partnership with VanEssa, the camping experts. The kitchenette is a 132-pound module that can fit in the back of the Mercedes van. It comes with a gas cooker, sink, fridge, and room to store necessities like plates and cups.

The sink offers a 3.4-gallon water tank, and buyers can customize other bits of the kitchenette. The second module offered turns the van into a bedroom of sorts. The bed measures 3.8 feet by 6.2 feet, with a bed big enough for two. You can store this piece above the kitchenette module. Plus, you can fold it up and continue to use the rear seat in the van.

The 2022 Citan also has all of the upgraded technology drivers might want. The newest MBUX infotainment system, touchscreen, blind-spot warning, and active lane keep. Mercedes-Benz is offering it in a 1.5 L diesel option, 1.5L gasoline option, or a fully electric eCitan is coming eventually.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is an all-around van

Mercedes-Benz says the Citan is “the professional among urban delivery vans and a true all-arounder.” Mercedes also called it spacious, agile, efficient, and safe. While it might not look like your usual sporty Mercedes-Benz, it will share the unmistakable front grille. The van also comes in a variety of lengths. These lengths are 12.92 ft (Compact) to 14.17 ft (Long) and then 15.45 ft (Extra-long).

“The travel and leisure vehicle market is increasingly important for us as part of our strategic orientation. This also applies to the brand new generation of our Citan, which is an ideal basic vehicle for micro camper van conversions,”

Klaus Rehkugler | Head of sales & marketing for Mercedes-Benz Vans

While Mercedes has always had an extensive lineup, adding more vehicles to the van and motorhome segment is quite the move. The Citan is due sometime in 2022, but hopefully, this won’t be the last we see of the new Mercedes van until then.

The van segment is heating up

If you couldn’t already tell, the words “city” and “titan” made the Mercedes-Benz Citan. Mercedes set out to make a van that was still a luxury vehicle but offered more all-around versatility. The Citan isn’t just a delivery van. It’s a delivery van, a daily driver, and a weekend-camper. Take it to watch the fireworks or take it to the grocery store; Mercedes wants you to be able to do it all. There is value in that. Hope to see you in the U.S. sometime soon, Citan.

With the Rivian R1T EV scheduled to hit the market in September 2021, and then IPO at $80 billion, it is high time we see some test drive videos. Motor Trend has reviewed nearly every new vehicle since 1949. The Motor Trend team took the market’s first electric truck out for a week. Find out why the Rivian truck review concludes, “this changes everything.”

Hydraulics For Perfect Damping At Any Speed, And Any Height

Motor Trend’s Aaron Gold and Christian Seabaugh drove a pre-production Rivian R1T electric truck, both on-road and off-road. The two editors immediately honed in on two technological advancements that give the Rivian R1T unprecedented driving characteristics.

Several upcoming electric trucks, such as Tesla’s Cybertruck, offer air suspension. The Rivian enhances this premium setup with a system of interconnected hydraulics to provide damping and roll control. The driver only needs to set the R1T’s drive mode and the truck adjusts its damping to the speed and terrain.

According to Gold, the R1T can blast around paved twisties and, “in on-road mode, there’s almost no body roll in the corners…we were driving it like a sports sedan, but we’ve got four people in the cab and a bed full of stuff.” And eliminating body roll is critical for a vehicle with a claimed 3-second zero to 60 mph time.

Off-road, the same truck can rise to 14.4 inches of ground clearance and “drives over whatever you point it at.” During the Rivian truck review, Seabaugh specifies, “A lot of air suspensions get really flimsy off-road too because you raise the ride height, you lose a little bit of your damping. But I think, thanks to those hydraulic elements of the suspension, the ride quality is maintained throughout.”

The second technological advancement that the Motor Trend team pointed out is the R1T’s drivetrain, defined by four electric motors. A four-motor drivetrain is unprecedented in the electric truck market: even the upcoming Hummer EV SUT only offers three motors.

The main benefit of four motors that Motor Trend noticed was the R1T’s “torque-vectoring superpowers.” With Rivian’s algorithm, the R1T can adjust each wheel’s power output–and speed.

Off-roaders have been pursuing faster torque-vectoring for years. ICE torque-placement technology ranges from 4WD to AWD, aftermarket limited-slip differentials, and even fully locking differentials. But these systems suffer from delays caused by clutches or viscous couplings.

The Motor Trend reviewers noted, “the Rivian R1T offers real-time torque vectoring, delivering power precisely to the corner where it’s needed.” The result is that “off-roading in the R1T is a mind-bender…its four-motor drivetrain sensing slip and meting out power to each wheel as needed.”

The R1T’s torque-vectoring system is so instantaneous that it benefits the truck’s handling at high speeds too. For example, during their Rivian truck review, the Motor Trend team attempted to break the vehicle lose in a corner and could not. Instead, they “felt the R1T’s torque-vectoring superpowers at work: the outside-rear motor powered up and brought the R1T’s nose around, and we blasted out of the turn…it’s a sensation we’ve experienced in only a handful of cars, and never in a heavily laden pickup truck.”

Gold says of driving the R1T, “It was being a sports sedan and a pickup truck–at the same time!” The team concluded that the R1T left them hopeful for “the prospect of what electrification can do for one of America’s most popular vehicle segments.” Watch the test drive below:
