After a dramatic weekend at the 2021 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, we learned that Lewis Hamilton’s dramatic tire lockup on corner one of the restart was due to something called the “Magic Button.” What is this magic button, and what does it do? How could something so seemingly useful cause Lewis Hamilton to throw away what could well have been a pole position in the Formula 1 Driver’s Championship? These F1 cars are home to many hidden features and secrets.

Lewis Hamilton blames magic button for Azerbaijan loss

First of all, what is this “magic button?” According to Motorsports.com, it is something that has been called a couple of names over the years. It is most commonly referred to as the “magic paddle” or “magic button.”

When F1 changed to hybrid cars in 2014, it required the braking system to get an update as well. There needed to be more electronic assistance for brake balance, given the extra onus on energy recovery via the MGU-K.

Brakes are the most important part of any racing

In all forms of racing, brakes are where the real speed comes from. For F1, this is doubly true. In fact, there is a myriad of tools available to F1 drivers to calibrate their car’s brake bias. In earlier F1 days, brake bias was controlled by a lever in the cockpit. These days, as the cars have gotten more complex, so too has the brake bias controls, causing them to move to the steering wheel.

As far as Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, there is one dial and two buttons to set brake bias and another rotary dial to control engine braking. And, of course, the magic button.

What does the magic button do in F1?

Since the brake settings are complicated and numerous, the magic button serves as an override that sends the brake bias hard to the front. This setting is not very useful in most situations, but it can save a driver’s skin every so often, especially when they need heat in the tires and brakes quickly.

The magic button sends 90 percent of the brake bias to the front axle instead of the more normal 55-60 percent on the front axle. According to Motorsports.com, the magic button also stops the MGU-K from recovering energy.

So, what happened to Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix?

The reports say that Hamilton had engaged the magic button on the formation lap because he wanted to heat his tires before the standing restart caused by Verstappen’s crash. This was one of many clever ideas used by Hamilton to enjoy his status as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.

Lewis Hamilton got back to his grid spot, and the race restarted. The green light hit, and the race re-commenced. When Lewis swerved away from Sergio Perez right before turn one, he accidentally hit the magic button. So, when he went to brake for turn one, his tires locked, and Lewis Hamilton went sailing straight ahead and off track.

Since this accidental mashing of the magic button caused Hamilton to end the race with zero points, Mercedes is now interested in changing the steering wheel layout. Hopefully, with some tweaks, the Petronas squad can avoid this frustrating situation in the future.

Jeep takes Memorial Day seriously, it would seem. The American automaker has decided to commemorate the men and women of the United States military in a special way, with the release of Freedom variants spread across its lineup. Now, you’ll be able to order any new Jeep with the special package. It’s just an appearance package, but honestly, it seems like half the Wranglers on the road have an American flag on them, so why not just have the dealership slap a few flags on there? At least that way the stickers will be on straight.

Jeep Freedom: for a good cause

Thankfully, this isn’t just some vain marketing ploy from a manufacturer to garner support from military-associated clientele. The Toledo-based manufacturer is going to put their money where their mouths are by donating $250 to the USO. This isn’t just a one-time donation either, the automaker will do it for every Freedom Edition Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, or other models that are sold.

This isn’t a totally new trim level, however. The Wrangler has offered a Freedom Edition for some time now. To be frank, the Wrangler is also the vehicle that looks best with the trim level, given its military origins. The Willys is of course largely responsible for the recognition the brand receives globally, but it’s good to see the option being extended to the rest of the range while simultaneously backing a good cause.

What’s in the Freedom trim

In addition to extending the Freedom option package to new models, there are also some changes to the package to help it have a little more of a military flair. For 2021, Freedom models will have “Oscar Mike” embossed into the seat headrests, which is military lingo for “on the move.” Fitting, given the active lifestyle often associated with the brand. Fret not, there are still more changes and features in the Freedom package.

The most notable of these changes comes on the exterior of models. Freedom-equipped models will all have a very large and very prominent star graphic on the hood. Whether this works on the Jeep you may have in mind depends, but the star certainly looks better on the larger vehicles like the Gladiator and Grand Cherokee. There’s also some new blacked-out wheels and American flag decals on the fenders.

Freedom isn’t free, and neither is the trim level

Given the extra visual changes, the Freedom Edition adds, it’s safe to say prices on models will reflect that. For example, a 2021 Wrangler will run you $27,900. According to Jeep, a Freedom Edition Wrangler comes out to $41,285. A big jump to be sure, but there’s also some other goodies thrown in for the price; such as the Technology Group option pack. This comes with a host of climate control upgrades as well as Android Auto and Carplay. If the $250 isn’t enough feel-good, Jeep says that active and retired service members are up for a $500 incentive on any model.

Consumer Reports’ annual Top 10 list is an excellent place to start shopping for your next vehicle. It allows you to quickly determine which vehicle drives well and is expected to be extremely reliable. While some of the vehicles that appear on the top of this year’s list are a surprise, no one is surprised to see that the 2021 Kia Telluride continues to dominate the midsized SUVs with a third-row category.

The appeal of the 2021 Kia Telluride

In their review of the 2021 Kia Telluride, CNET refers to the SUV as an “automotive all-star.” They go on to say that, “With driving refinement and interior appointments that wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury car, handsome styling and plenty of versatility, this three-row hauler is easily one of the segment’s best.” It’s a description that perfectly suits the Telluride.

One of the reasons the Telluride triggers such rave reviews is because Kia spared no expense when designing and building the interior. Nearly all the buttons and surfaces are covered in the softest of plastic that both looks and feels fantastic.

The instrument panel is laid out in such a way that it looks attractive and that everything is within easy reach. The easy-to-use layout doesn’t just make your driving experience more enjoyable, but it also makes your commute safer since you’re not fumbling for the controls or constantly taking your eyes off the road so you can see what button you’re pushing.

In terms of seating and cargo space, Car and Driver states that the 2021 Kia Telluride is ideal, “for those who need to haul a family and look right, the Telluride is a terrific and affordable choice.”

What makes the 2021 Telluride such a solid choice for families is the third-row seating. Unlike some other third-row seat SUVs in this class, the Telluride’s third row is designed in such a way that passengers actually have enough space to be comfortable. The 21 cubic feet behind the last row of seats means the Telluride gives you plenty of cargo space for groceries, luggage, and pet supplies.

The 2021 Kia Telluride is equipped with a V6 engine that provides the vehicle with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. If you purchase a Telluride that’s designed with front-wheel drive, you can expect to get 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. That changes to 19 mpg city and 24 mpg for the all-wheel-drive versions of the Telluride.

The Kia Telluride is once again in the Top 10!

Consumers Reports recently released their 2021 List of the Top 10 vehicles. No one should have been surprised to see that the Kia Telluride was listed as the best vehicle in the current crop of Midsize Three-Row SUVs.

“Last year the Telluride became the new benchmark for three-row SUVs, thanks to its thoughtful, no-compromise design,” Consumers Reports wrote. “Now in its second year on the Top Picks list, it still dominates this popular segment with a stellar road test and Overall Score. And surveys show that owners love it. This isn’t a model that thrives on flash. Instead, it stands out by being highly competent in almost every way.

How Consumer Reports scored the 2021 Telluride

Consumer Reports didn’t just place the Telluride on the Top Cars List for 2021, they awarded the vehicle an extremely impressive overall score of 96 out of 100. The second-place vehicle in the category, the Hyundai Palisade, only scored an 84. The Telluride earned a perfect five out of five for both consumer satisfaction and predicted reliability. It scored a 97 out of 100.

Based on how Consumer Reports scored the Telluride, if you’re in the market for a midsized SUV, you should stop in at your local Kia dealership.
