Considering the recent computer chip and inventory shortages, it’s no surprise that prices for used cars have risen in the past few months. Car buyers have reportedly been paying the sticker price for new cars and marked-up prices for used ones. However, the prices for used Saturns have surprisingly increased more than any other car brand, according to data from Car Gurus.

Saturn prices have risen exponentially

You might not remember the Saturn brand name. However, the now-defunct automaker was a nameplate under General Motors from 1990 up until 2010 and was marketed as a “new kind of car company,” when it first appeared on the market.

In addition to a no-haggle dealership sales model, Saturn differentiated itself through its vehicle lineup throughout the years. With plastic-clad compact cars that were efficient enough to steal some of the public’s attention away from Japanese rivals in the early 90s, Saturn saw some success during its production run. However, that run was ended following GM’s 2009 bankruptcy and restructuring, according to Auto Trends Magazine.

As you can imagine, buying any Saturn model in the used market since then has been a super-affordable affair. However, The Drive recently reported that transaction prices have increased more than any other car brand in the past 90 days. According to the Car Gurus data, prices for Saturn vehicles have increased by 26.18% since March 2021 and 30.24% since June 2020. By comparison, Subaru’s sales increased by 12.13% and 20.26%, respectively, according to Autoblog.

Buyers could be running out of affordable used car options

By now, you might be wondering why Saturn prices are on the rise, considering the extinct automaker hasn’t been in the public spotlight in ages. According to Motor1, a good reason for the price increase could be due to used car buyers running out of affordable options. While many buyers would rather stick to car brands that are still in service, other buyers with super-tight budgets are now turning to older, or less mainstream brands, like Saturns, to get the budget-friendly transportation that they need.

Just because the data proves that Saturn vehicle prices are rising, it doesn’t mean that they are super expensive. Autoblog reports that Saturn’s transaction prices are still among the lowest in the market as the average sale price for one is $6,284. If you compare that to the average selling price of a Toyota ($23,734) or a Kia ($17,507), you can start to see why buyers are flocking to old Saturn vehicles.

Should you buy a Saturn?

If you’re wondering if buying a Saturn now will be like buying Bitcoin back in 2010, think again. While the prices of Saturns are on the rise, they might not be for long, which means that buying one now won’t likely lead to any financial gains in the near future. But if you’re looking for a super affordable means of transportation, then you can add a Saturn vehicle to your shopping list. Just remember that you will be probably paying a premium for one.

When the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX released last year, the Launch Edition sold like hot cakes. In fact, all of the 702 units sold out in less than three hours. Now, Ram 1500 TRX Launch edition models are already going to auction in hopes of turning a big profit.

Selling one a 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition at the Barrett-Jackson auction could mean big money. According to CarBuzz, these are some seriously sought-after pickup trucks. Due to the fact that they were so popular, dealers marked them up as much a $50,000.

How much is a 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition?

According to Ram Trucks, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX starts at $70,425. The Launch Edition TRX, however, cost $93,000 CarBuzz reports. So buyers of the 2021 Ram 150 TRX Launch Edition pickup truck paid about six figures for their new Ram trucks

The number this coveted truck will bring at auction is only speculative at this point. It’s definitely not outside the realm of possibility that this truck will turn a profit over its original price. That said, it’s anyone’s guess just how much money this TRX Launch Edition is going to go for at the Barret-Jackson auction later this month.

“Assuming its original owner wasn’t forced to pay any dealership markups, which in some cases went as high as $50,000 for the Launch Edition, then they’ll very likely earn back the truck’s $93,000 price tag and then some.”

CarBuzz

What TRX features does this Launch Edition model have?

According to CarBuzz, the listing doesn’t show the mileage. However, it’s doubtful that it’s up into the thousands. Of 702 units sold last year in under three hours, this 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition pickup truck is a TRX LE with a VIN of 307.

Every Ram TRX 1500 has a 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 engine under the hood. This engine produces up to 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. In only 4.5 second, the TRX speedily stalks its way up to 60 mph.

Each Ram TRX gets power sent to all four wheels. This is done through an eight speed transmission, even though the listing (likely mistakenly) calls it a six-speed.

“The Launch Edition stands out not only because of its low build count, but also for the extra features included.”

CarBuzz

Each 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition pickup truck comes equipped with the TRX level 2 equipment package group. That means that there are details like carbon fiber interior trim, special color accents, a heads-up display and upgraded Harmon Kardon 19-speaker sound system.

In addition, there’s a panoramic sunroof and exterior graphics. You know, in case passersby don’t notice this massive truck due to its sheer size alone. Everyone at the grocery story will know this truck’s name immediately, because ‘TRX’ is badged all over the place.

Extra Ram TRX features on the Launch Edition pickup truck up for sale at auction

The model listed also offers the dealer-installed steps that power adjust and cost an additional $3,000. This truck is made for off-roading right off the factory line. However, the one coming up for sale at auction also has a “heavily upgraded suspension and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Wrangler Territory All-Terrain Goodyear tires, according to CarBuzz.

What color is it?

There are a number of exterior paint job options for the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX pickup. This particular Launch Edition pickup truck boasts the Anvil Gray color that was exclusive to the Launch Edition units. The interior also has a LE-badged brushed metallic aluminum middle console.

Overall, this is a special chance for some lucky deep-pocketed buyer to get in the driver’s seat of a Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition. While this one probably hasn’t done much yet in the way of off-road romping, we agree with the folks at CarBuzz.

Hopefully, the new owner of this beastly truck will actually put it to good use and take it out for a spin on the dunes.

The Queen Mary is one of the last of the great ocean liners. That’s because it isn’t an ocean liner anymore but a moored hotel and events center in Long Beach, California. Now, for the first time since its permanent home became Long Beach over 40 years ago, the city has taken control of the ship. But forget about a road trip to see it because the reasons are not good.

What happened to the Queen Mary hotel?

The ocean liner is in almost irreparable shape from previous lessors not maintaining it. Since it became the ship’s owner the city has contracted companies to run day-to-day operations. But over the decades the operators have been unable to maintain control and make a profit.

Now the latest company, Urban Commons, has filed bankruptcy. The city of Long Beach finds itself having to spend over $23 million in urgent repairs. Beyond that figure, there really remains hundreds of millions more needed. Former maintenance operators have been unable to make those repairs. The Long Beach Post says that Long Beach has been battling Urban Commons in court for years.

News in bankruptcy court has revealed the RMS Queen Mary faces the real danger of flooding and capsizing. Sailing the seven seas since 1937, the news is terrible for a city that depended on former operators. Unfortunately, they didn’t abide by their contracts and maintain the ship. Last Friday, Urban Commons, which signed a 66-year lease in 2016, surrendered all of its leases.

Some issues are structural hull problems and the bilge system no longer works

Long Beach has already issued $23 million in funds to Urban Commons to make repairs in 2017. It mostly did not complete any of the necessary repairs. Some of the issues are structural problems in the hull, the emergency generator is not functional, and the bilge system no longer works. That is the biggest concern because if the boat takes on water it could flood the entire ship and capsize.

An inspector of the ship for over 30 years before his contract was terminated, Ed Pribonic told the LA Times, “The city was never able to keep up with the maintenance on that ship, regardless of who they leased it to. With the amount of money and the amount of time it would take—I can’t see who’s going to step up and take on that responsibility. We’re talking hundreds of millions of dollars and years of work.”

“We’re taking all steps and preparing for all the potential scenarios,” said John Keisler, Director of Economic Development for the city of Long Beach, to KPCC radio. “And we’re working very hard with our legal team and also looking at the operations with our engineering team. We’re identifying which urgent repairs would need to be done immediately.”

The ship/hotel has been closed to visitors since May 2020 due to the coronavirus. Repairs are being accessed and will soon begin. The city of Long Beach released a statement saying, “The ship will remain closed to the public while critical repairs are completed, as it is faster and more cost-efficient to complete this work when there are no visitors present.”Long Beach will in the interim fund some of the emergency repairs through cruise ship fees, leases on and around the ship’s property, and Tidelands funds.

Urban Commons had bigger plans beyond operating the ship. It planned a $250 million development called “Queen Mary Island.” By the end of 2019, it instead had racked up over $500 million in liabilities. The city has blocked any sale of Urban Commons assets until it pays for the needed repairs.

For whatever reason, driverless tech and electric vehicles often get grouped together. Perhaps this is because both technologies are so new, perhaps because most think of Tesla when the subject turns to self-driving and EVs. However, Tesla isn’t the only company working to make driverless cars a reality. Autonomous tech company Cruise has made some big gains in the field recently and is excited to share the news.

DMV permits and driverless cars

The eerily bare interior of a Cruise taxi | Cruise

It’s true, the image above is a shocking one, but according to Cruise, this is soon to be the norm, at least for the San Francisco-based company. Earlier last month, Cruise applied for a permit for their driverless cars in the state of California. The permit has since been granted by the California State DMV and the California Public Utilities Commission. This means that very soon there will be fleets of the Chevy Bolt-based taxis spread across the state.

The permits specifically allow driverless deliveries and rides across the state. Amazing as it sounds, it’s not even the first time something like this has happened. In some locations, Amazon relies on autonomous vehicles to complete simpler delivery tasks. All of this tech is very experimental, but innovation is always welcome, and it’ll be interesting to see how all this driverless business plays out.

How it all works

A see-through image showing the electronics behind the Cruise driverless taxi
The electronics behind self-driving | Cruise

Most driverless cars work off a combination of two things: radar and cameras, both controlled by a computer. In layman’s terms, the computer compiles the data from both the cameras and radar to deduce what is happening in front of the car and behave accordingly. The Cruise system works in much the same way.

One of the most important parts of this process is something Cruise is already on top of. Prediction is extremely important in these scenarios, and without it, a self-driving car is a difficult thing to produce. Prediction is also why humans are so good at driving. We’re able to constantly monitor and predict what is going to happen around us. For example, if a ball rolls into the street with no one in sight, it’s a safe prediction that something will be following the ball very soon. This is exactly how Cruise vehicles predict variables on the road, and then learn from them to become a better package.

Is anyone else a little nervous?

As amazing as all this tech is – and it is amazing – it’s also a little concerning to some. It’s not hard to see why either; people are an unknown variable on the road, but they are a known constant and most people know how to navigate around those who are… less than experienced drivers. The concern here is that machines have so little learned experience and the technology is so new that it could be dangerous to others on the road. This kind of thing does happen, often with Tesla involved in some way. New tech always has hiccups, but the cost of those hiccups must be considered before we press further into a driverless world.
