This yellow and green 1996 Honda Civic hatchback will undoubtedly turn the heads of any onlookers and for those well versed in the import tuning scene, it will refresh memories. This isn’t the typical budget-built, Autozone-special Civic that you can currently find in your local Craigslist search. Instead, this particular hatchback was built by world-renowned Honda and Acura tuner JUN Auto Mechanic, and it’s currently listed on Bring A Trailer.

The JUN Auto Civic has been around

As you can probably guess, this 96 Honda Civic was popular around the time that the original The Fast and the Furious made its cinematic debut. But don’t get it twisted, this JUN Auto-modified Civic wasn’t a product of hyped-up cinematics. Instead, it’s a product of hard labor and some expert tuning.

In fact, if you were a fan of the tuning magazines from the early 2000s, then you might remember seeing this car on the cover of Super Street magazine. In 2001, the tuner magazine gave this car away to a lucky subscriber but it then changed hands to its current owner in 2005. Bring A Trailer notes that the Carfax for the car reveals no prior accidents, five different owners, and at least one open recall. That’s not bad, considering the car is 25 years old.

Its modification list is extensive

Getting to the nitty-gritty, the JUN Auto Civic has quite the list of modifications. According to the car’s description in the BAT listing, the Civic is powered by a JUN-modified, 1.8-liter B18C crate engine that’s mated to a five-speed Integra Type R transmission with custom gearing. Other modifications include a Cusco limited-slip differential, Sparco bucket seats, and 17-inch Volk Racing TE37 wheels finished in white and wrapped in Yokohama S Drive rubber.

Beneath those white wheels lies a set of Tanabe adjustable coil overs that sit above Integra GSR-sourced disc brakes with Brembo cross-drilled and slotted rotors. On the outside, the Civic sports a yellow and green paint job indicative of JUN Auto’s trademark colors in addition to some well-placed graphics. Other exterior modifications include a Civic Type R front grille and spoiler as well as a JUN Auto vented hood, headlight covers, and rear spoiler.

Magazines are included with the sale

As you can probably tell by now, this JUN Auto Civic means serious track-ready business. It was even featured in an older Super Street story, which noted that this Civic makes around 220 hp to the wheels and is capable of pulling off 13-second quarter-miles passes at a high elevation. Again, not bad for a Civic that looks like a background car in all of the Fast and Furious movies.

The JUN Auto Civic is currently being sold on the Bring A Trailer auction site with a current bid of $15,750 (as of this writing). How much it will end up selling for is a total mystery, however, we wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up over $20,000. Also, if it sweetens the deal, the description says that the car will come with copies of the Super Street magazine that it was featured in. Now that’s what we call a “good deal.”

Jaguar seems intent on sending off their gasoline engines with a bang. The brand will be all-electric by 2025, but the British manufacturer is going anything but quietly. The F-Type is famous for its rowdy exhaust, with Jag even making the motor quieter after its debut due to complaints from customers and journalists alike. Now, it’s the only powertrain option in the brand’s flagship model starting in 2022.

P450: Jaguar doubles down

2022 F-Type R | Jaguar

That’s right. The previously optional four and six banger motors are out. Honestly, the supercharged six-cylinder will be missed. At one point in time, the supercharged V6 was the only way to experience the quintessentially British F-Type with a stick shift. However, time and tide wait for no man and no motor. The new base model F will be powered by a supercharged V8 making a healthy 444 hp, with the R model getting a bump to 575 hp according to Jag. More power isn’t a terrible price to pay for the loss of the manual transmission.

The new powerplant does come with downsides that aren’t mechanical, however. The new V8 had to get paid for somehow, so Jaguar has upped the entry price of the 2022 F-Type to $71,50. Frankly, that’s quite pricey for the power. After all, a Camaro ZL1 comes up on 650 hp for around the same money, with a stick. But at Jaguar, your money goes to a more refined experience.

The beautiful new F-Type’s trim structuring has changed as well. Base models are now called the “P450”, with the “R” moniker staying for the creme de la creme of F-Types. The lower specced P450 comes with either rear or all-wheel drive, and the R is only available with all-wheel-drive to reign in those extra horses, or Jaguars as the case may be. It used to be the F-Type R could be had in rear-driven format, but that was phased out some time ago. Admittedly, the old F-Type had a little bit of a reputation for spitting out unaware drivers.

Available in coupe or convertible, the new F-Type also comes with a host of paint colors, with the famous “British Racing Green” among them. If the colors available aren’t enough for you, Jag’s Special Vehicle Operations will happily make you a custom color in exchange for a few British pounds. $70,000 to north of $80,000 is a lot for a little-known sports coupe, and the Jag certainly has some tough competition.

How does the F-Type stack up against the competition?

The Jaguar F-Type has some stiff competition, such as the new Porsche Cayman and Camaro ZL1 to name a few. Both live comfortably in the $60-$100,000 price slot, and both come with a manual transmission should you desire. Whether the Jag can continue to make a name for itself as a sort of “budget” Aston Martin-esque Grand Touring car remains to be seen, but the new V8 powerplant certainly helps its cause.

BMW has launched a pair of all-electric vehicles, the i4 sedan and its crossover compatriot, the iX. More importantly, there’s a hot i4 coming that will be called the M50. Whether intentionally or not, the Bavarian marque has just created a competitor the their own sports sedan: the M3. The M50 is cheaper and quite possibly faster in a straight line, but whether it can truly compete with enthusiasts remains to be seen.

BMW i4 M50: specs and options

The 2022 i4 M50 sedan | BMW

The M50 version of the i4 certainly has what it takes to bring down the M3 on paper. With a 245 mile range, it’ll probably go just as far as the M3. The new EV also boasts 536 hp and runs a very EV-like 0-60 of 3.9 seconds, according to the German brand. For reference, the new M3 Competition touts 503 hp and a blistering 4.3-second sprint to 60, nearly identical to the M50.

That zero to sixty number may look like a big gap, but the difference is nearly imperceptible from the driver’s seat. Where the difference is felt is in the handling. The M50 will come with a sort of “handling pack” with optional improvements like strut tower bars to help the heavy EV feel more nimble. Frankly, handling is where this car needs to be focused, as it’ll feel nothing like the M3 if the car doesn’t seem to shrink around you in the corners.

Here’s where the i4 M50 really gets the M3: price. The new M50 starts a staggering $4000 less than the base M3, at $65,900. In contrast, a decently specced M3 will run you nearly $30,000 more, ending up just barely on the right side of $95,000, and that’s not even the Competition model. Serious savings to be sure, but enthusiasts aren’t here to save a buck. It’s the drive that counts for them.

Without ever having been near either the M50 or the M3, it’s plain to see that the M3 just has something on the M50. Be it the manual transmission, flared fenders, or loud paint options. BMW seems to think some enthusiasts are ready to move on from the feel of petrol cars to electric ones, and that’s the real question. What kind of experience do you as either an enthusiast or a consumer want?

Is an electric sports sedan for you?

From an enthusiasts’ point of view, it’s nearly impossible to imagine the M50 even touching the M3 in terms of sales, driving experience, or feel. BMW has simply spent so much more time learning to make petrol cars drive better and better every year. The Bavarians are a little new to this EV thing, after all. Maybe in a few years, the brand will be able to pull enthusiasts away from their filthy gas-powered cars, but probably not with the M50.

Much like the RV boom, we have seen a dramatic uptick in off-road-focused trim packages for pickup trucks and SUVs. The Volkswagen Taos Basecamp concept is yet another road-going SUV that has gotten the overlanding treatment

VW Taos Basecamp Concept | VW

It’s hard to know whether VW intends to actually build something like this or simply soak up the residual press that is shaken off the Ford Bronco or the Jeep Wrangler. Either way, it is surprisingly cool.

Is the Volkswagen Taos Basecamp concept actually going to get made?

The harsh reality is that the Taos Basecamp is likely never going to see production. According to CarScoops. The Volkswagen Taos Basecamp is mostly just a promotional concept to hype up the regular road-going Taos. However, the hope is that if VW sees enough interest that similar or maybe even the same details might make their way to a future styling package.

Because concept cars are typically one-off, custom-built creations, they get far more care and consideration than production cars. In part, this is why we rarely ever see a concept go to production with the same level of detail and consideration.

What makes the Taos Basecamp special?

To really set the Volkswagen Taos Basecamp apart from the normal Taos, VW fitted it with loads of cool upgrades and accessories. Like any good off-roader, the Taos Basecamp sports a fresh skid plate up front, extended fender flares, and upgraded side skirts.

Other accessories for the outfitted VW Taos are a cool matte-black hood and roof, sporty orange accents, and a Thule roof rack and basket. Prominently featured on top of the roof basket is a row of off-road approved LED rally lights. It is a simple modification but extra lights always immediately signal off-roading.

The accessories are cool and definitely give it some off-roading advantages, but for the most part, they serve to make sure it looks like an off-roading rig. Volkswagen gave the Taos Basecamp a new lifted suspension from H&R Special Springs to make it actually be able to conquer trails (if it ever saw one.) The Taos concept also rolls on custom fifteen52 wheels wrapped in beefy Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires.

Did Volkswagen do anything to the interior?

There isn’t much going on inside, but VW did add a cool custom cargo divider from the polytec group. It is essentially a cage wall that allows for vertical storage by clipping gear in like a Mole system. VW shows this piece of gear as an easy way of storing climbing gear specifically.

Will we ever see any of this at VW dealers?

Of course, the Volkswagen Taos Basecamp, as we see it here, is not going to go into production. However, VW has mentioned offering a Basecamp styling package. Volkswagen hasn’t offered up many specifics yet, but this will most likely mean some fender flares and the orange and black accents. It may also come with special wheels and maybe beefier tires.

It is unlikely that we will see a Taos with custom suspension, wheels, roof rack, lights, skid plate, and so on from the factory – but we can dream.
