While it’s always fun to be a billionaire, you have more options in the hypercar and supercar space than ever before. With the shift away from internal combustion, we’ll undoubtedly see many of these ultra-limited machines turn to electricity. This club of rare machines grows by one today with the Rimac Nevera. While it was previously known as the C_Two, this electric hypercar’s new name gets inspiration from a storm.

According to Rimac’s latest release, the Nevera develops 1914 hp from four electric motors. However, the biggest technological advances come in the form of weight savings and aerodynamics. In fact, this car’s entire carbon-fiber monocoque weighs just 440 lb.

How fast is the Rimac Nevera?

Rimac Nevera | Rimac

To say that the Rimac Nevera is fast would be a massive understatement. As mentioned in the intro, this electric hypercar develops 1914 hp and 1740 lb-ft of torque from four electric motors. According to Rimac, the Nevera can hit 60 mph in as little as 1.85 seconds. However, it is worth noting that the car requires a one-foot rollout and a high-friction surface.

Regardless, this hypercar needs just 8.6 seconds to complete the quarter-mile. It’ll accelerate from 0-186 mph in 9.3 seconds and top out at a max speed of 258 mph. In short, this eco-friendly monster will leave some of the world’s most expensive hypercars in the dust.

As mentioned earlier, the Nevera features a carbon fiber monocoque. However, the Croatian carmaker developed a brand-new battery pack that improves the car’s structural stiffness by up to 37 percent. Thanks to the heavy 120-kWh battery under the car’s floor, it still weighs in at 4,739 lb or about as much as a Ram 1500.

To offset this weight penalty, the Nevera features a couple of intricate aerodynamic modes. The first is the “Low Drag” mode which reduces the car’s aerodynamic drag by 17.5 percent. Opt for the “High Downforce” mode, and you’ll get 326 percent more downforce.

You still get 342 miles of electric range

While the massive battery certainly presents a heavy problem, you still get excellent electric range from the Rimac Nevera. In fact, the Croatian carmaker estimates that you’ll be able to cover at least 342 miles before needing a charge. Once you plug in, it’ll take you around 22 minutes to go from 0 to 80 percent. This is only possible because the Nevera supports ultra-fast 500-kW charging. Keep in mind. This entire system was built in-house by Rimac.

In terms of weight distribution, the battery pack’s presence doesn’t disrupt things too much. That’s because the Nevera still retains a 48/52 weight distribution. Additionally, it is worth noting that since the weight is concentrated on the bottom of the car, it also has a very low center of gravity, allowing it to handle better.

Only 150 Rimac Nevera examples will hit the road at $2.4 million each

As you might imagine, the Rimac Nevera isn’t poised to sell in big numbers. Given its level of performance and the size of the company building it, we’ll likely never see one on the road. In total, Rimac plans to build 150 examples starting at around $2.4 million. However, expect bespoke options and builds to drive that price up. While it might seem pointless for average enthusiasts to get excited about a hypercar, these advancements in electric tech are wonderful to see, especially when they begin to trickle down into more affordable models.

While it looks like the rest of the world is headed toward electrified transportation, Toyota sees it differently. It is currently testing a three-cylinder hydrogen-powered race car. It hopes the engine will develop into a production hydrogen engine. It wants to leaf frog over electric power to lead in carbon neutrality with hydrogen power.

Akio Toyoda wants the government to stay out of what carbon neutral is

The head of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, wants governments to stay out of deciding what the future of transportation will look like. There are other sources of virtually carbon-free engines that could turn into environmental solutions. Those would include some form of the internal combustion.

“The ultimate goal is carbon neutrality,” Toyoda said to Automotive News. “It shouldn’t be about rejecting hybrids and gasoline cars and only selling fuel cells and battery-electric cars. We want to expand the choices available in the path to carbon neutrality. This is the first step.”

First, this sounds great. We agree-why have the government limit what is available toward a carbon-neutral end? But remember that Toyota is behind in electric vehicle development and has few EVs at this time.

Toyota led the way with its Prius hybrid sedan over 15 years ago

But also remember that Toyota led the way with its Prius hybrid sedan over 15 years ago. There was nothing like it on the road. However, at some point, auto manufacturers felt that ditching hybrids for full-on all-electric power were the way to go.

And with that path, has made the internal combustion engine out to be the problem. The government has turned it into a war on ICE vehicles. Instead, it should be a goal toward net-zero carbon.

“Toyota isn’t doing this because it’s behind in EVs,” said Takaki Nakanishi, head auto analyst at the Nakanishi Research Institute. “Toyota’s doing this to save Japan’s auto industry and its domestic supply chain. This is a performance by Toyoda to influence policy in a better direction.”

The “performance” is in reference to Toyoda lapping the Corolla race car with hydrogen power at Fuji Speedway. Toyoda was part of the team driving the Corolla in a 24-hour endurance race. It is meant to show the durability of the new engine, though only under development at this stage.

Currently, there are a number of problems with hydrogen power

Problems with hydrogen power are many. Fueling stations are almost non-existent. Tanks necessary to contain pressurized hydrogen are expensive to make and heavy. And the pressurized hydrogen itself is expensive. So there are many hurdles outside of engine development that need to be addressed.

Toyota currently offers the Mirai hydrogen-powered fuel-cell sedan. Hyundai has the Nexo, and Honda with its Clarity-all three are offering hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. But they’re not having nearly the impact that the Prius did after its first generation.

Mazda was experimenting with hydrogen-powered rotary engines in the 1990s and finding they were compatible. But in the early 2000s, they shifted away from hydrogen to concentrate on electrification. Now it has expressed interest in reviving that development.

Many countries are looking at 2050 as the point where they will see the complete elimination of gasoline power. So it is still about 30 years away. Much has changed in the last 30 years so continued development with hydrogen power still has time to become a solution to carbon neutrality.

Besides releasing the new entry-level Trident, Triumph is updating practically every other bike it makes for 2022. That includes several motorcycles in the Bonneville family that don’t necessarily bear the Bonneville name. One of these bikes is the Triumph Speed Twin, and for 2022 it’s getting a slight speed boost.

The 2022 Triumph Speed Twin comes with more power and better suspension

The Bonneville family of bikes includes more than just the standard Bonneville. There’s also the Bonneville Bobber, the Speedmaster cruiser, and the Thruxton café racer. And for those who want Thruxton-like handling without the sporty riding position at a budget, Triumph has the Street and Speed Twin, Rider explains.

Between the two, the Triumph Speed Twin is the more performance-oriented model. Since its 2019 launch, the Speed Twin has used a lighter-weight version of the Thruxton’s 1200cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, Cycle World reports. And while it wasn’t as fast or as sharp as the Thruxton RS or Triumph’s Triple bikes, the Speed Twin made “for a surprisingly satisfying ride,” Motorcyclist reports.

For 2022, though, the Triumph Speed Twin is getting a little bit sharper. It still has a 1200cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, but it now makes 99 hp, up from 96 hp. And while it still makes 83 lb-ft of torque, the torque peak occurs lower in the RPM range. Speaking of RPM, the 2022 Speed Twin has a higher redline than the outgoing model and revs more eagerly, Cycle World notes. The bike’s six-speed transmission, though, is unchanged.

Triumph did update the Speed Twin’s suspension for 2022, however. It still uses preload-adjustable Kayaba rear shocks and non-adjustable cartridge forks. But the forks are now upside-down Marzocchi units that are wider than before. And with the new forks means a new geometry that should translate to sharper handling, Bennetts claims.

The rest of the retro bike has also gotten an upgrade

Besides the upgraded suspension, the 2022 Triumph Speed Twin rides on new lighter-weight cast-aluminum wheels and Metzler Racetec RR tires. The bike also has larger front Brembo dual-disc brakes. Plus, the footpegs are positioned slightly more forward.

As before, the 2022 Triumph Speed Twin has ABS, traction control, multiple riding modes, and LED lighting, RideApart reports. However, Triumph tweaked the riding modes’ programming and added extra LED elements. And for 2022, the traction control can now be disabled independently of the riding mode, Cycle World notes.

As standard, the 2022 Triumph Speed Twin offers an under-seat USB outlet and an immobilizer on the key. The new aluminum headlight mounts and front fender are also standard. A tire-pressure monitoring system is available as an optional accessory, as are features like heated grips, quilted seats, and luggage. Plus, Triumph is currently partnering with Beeline to make a branded version of the latter’s Moto GPS unit as another accessory.

How does the 2022 Triumph Speed Twin compare to the competition?

The 2022 Triumph Speed Twin arrives in dealerships in August 2021 with prices starting at $12,500. And if you want the Triumph-branded Beeline unit, it costs $279, RevZilla reports.

Arguably the Speed Twin’s biggest rival is the BMW R nineT. With a $15,495 starting price, it’s noticeably more expensive than the Triumph. And 109 hp and 86 lb-ft of torque from its 1170cc boxer-twin, it’s also more powerful. However, at 487 pounds, it’s 11 pounds heavier.

Also, in a 2020 Motorcycle.com comparison test, it only barely won against the Speed Twin. In that test, reviewers noted “[t]he Triumph is actually the better sportbike most of the time.” And while the R nineT was worth the upcharge for its better suspension, Motorcycle.com reports, the 2022 Speed Twin’s upgrades might eliminate that advantage.

Another rival is the Ducati Scrambler Nightshift, which replaces the Café Racer trim from previous years. At just under $11K, it’s cheaper than the Speed Twin, and roughly 50 pounds lighter, Ultimate Motorcycling notes. However, its 803cc air-cooled L-twin ‘only’ makes 73 hp and 49 lb-ft, Motorcyclist reports.

Plus, the Nightshift only has a single front disc, and its KYB front forks match the outgoing Speed Twin’s forks, rather than the 2022 model’s forks. And while it has cornering ABS and a slipper clutch, the Scrambler Nightshift lacks traction control.

As with any bike, go on a test ride before you buy. But the 2022 Speed Twin brings a host of refinements to a bike that was already fun and approachable. And a little bit of extra speed that certainly doesn’t hurt.
