From the factory, the Toyota Land Cruiser is not bulletproof. However, there are plenty of places out there that will help create a bulletproof Land Cruiser. What exactly does making an SUV bulletproof require, and is there a high price on this process?

Toyota calls the Land Cruiser a “timeless icon.” That it is. The 2021 Land Cruiser starts at $85,565 and only goes up from there. It gets an EPA-estimated 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 on the highway. It has room for eight.

The Heritage Edition starts at $87,995 and gets the same mileage per gallon. The Heritage Edition has five seats but has the availability for eight.

Both editions offer Toyota Safety Sense Pre-Collision System, vehicle stability control, 10 airbags, and three-point seatbelts for all positions. A 5.7-Liter DOHC 32-Valve V8 engine with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) gets 381 horsepower.

How much does an armored Toyota Land Cruiser cost?

Most people do not need an armored Toyota Land Cruiser. Frequently, government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), security organizations, or random very important, Very Important People will use one.

Mahindra is one brand that offers such an option. The work done by Mahindra is “tested and certified to BSI PAS 300, VSAG VS6, VPAM BRV 2009 and ERV 2010 standards against ballistic and blast threats, and driveability tested in accordance with BSI PAS 301 for an armored vehicle when operating at its in-service operational mass and achieved good results.”

This defines the various types of ballistic impacts, such as shotgun, rifle, or handgun blasts. It tested for resistance from the side, roof and included projectile fragments.

With that said, there is no pricing available. Since the Land Cruiser costs almost $90,000 to start, it is presumably an expensive process. Carat Duchatelet, a company that produces bespoke high-security vehicles, offered a glimpse at a price.

The company noted to Army Recognition back in 2019 that a sedan costs anywhere from 100,000 to 1,2 million euros. That’s about $122,155 to $1,466,448.00 million. Vincent Lambert, CEO of Carat Duchatelet, said, “An exceptional car takes from 6 months to 1 year.”

What does the process of making an armored vehicle entail? Mahindra lists a few specifics. The SUV is fitted for radio and has multi-layered ballistic glass. The engine, battery, fuel tank, and ECU are protected from tampering.

All four are fit with a run-flat system. You can include a siren, intercom, and public address system. Plus, upgraded brakes and heavy-duty suspension. All of this can add thousands of pounds to the vehicle, so upgraded brakes and suspension are imperative.

And then there are some additional options, should you need such upgrades. Some might add a secondary electric system or a battery isolation system. The company of your choice can also include a blackout or stealth mode and a fire suppression system.

The options are pretty limitless when it comes to outfitting your SUV, with an unlimited budget, of course.

In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic wreaked havoc on the global economy. The auto industry was not immune and is still struggling to fully recover from its effects. Despite a turbulent year, Toyota managed to dominate the market with sales of its most popular vehicles.

According to year-to-date (YTD) sales figures, the Japanese automaker had five cars on the top 10 list of best-selling models so far. The Toyota RAV4, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, and Tacoma models all achieved impressive sales compared to other competitors in their class.

We decided to look at the data to determine what made the Toyota brand so successful in such a topsy-turvy market.

Top 10 YTD model sales for 2021

GoodCarBadCar recently analyzed the YTD sales volume for vehicles sold in the United States. The data analysis compares the sales figures of all models to the numbers from last year to determine the best-sellers overall.

While the Ford F-Series was the single best-selling model by more than 100,000 units, Toyota still dominated the top 10 with five of its models leading the pack.

The RAV4 compact SUV, Camry midsize sedan, Corolla compact sedan, Highlander midsize SUV, and Tacoma compact pickup truck were among the best-selling Toyota brand vehicles.

Other models in the top 10 included the Honda CR-V, Ford Explorer, Honda Civic, and Honda Accord.

Bloomberg reported that in 2020 Toyota sold an astounding 9.53 million vehicles. For the first time in five years, the Japanese group overtook Volkswagen to become “the world’s top-selling automaker.”

The Toyota RAV4 had YTD sales of 155,150 units. The best-selling compact crossover SUV offers economical fuel economy, state-of-the-art technology features, and impressive standard safety features.

Car and Driver noted a 20 percent increase in RAV4 sales for the first quarter, saying, “Ever since it achieved the title of best-selling non-truck in the country, the RAV4 has been extending its lead over its compact-crossover rivals.”

The Toyota Highlander ranked No. 7 on the list, achieving a YTD sales figure of 91,510 units. The midsize SUV beat out the competition due to its family-friendly features with seating for eight passengers. Kelley Blue Book rated the Highlander among the best family cars of 2021, saying its appeal is that “every Toyota comes backed with the company’s solid record of reliability and strong resale value.”

The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck secured the next position on the list, with a YTD total of 90,897 units. A leader in its class, the “taco” retains its value better than other models in the crowded segment. Not only is it one of the most reliable trucks on the road, but a favorite among off-road enthusiasts.

The automaker’s sedans can still outsell most SUVs

Despite the dwindling interest in sedans, the Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla are still able to outsell most SUVs on the market.

The Camry has YTD sales of 108,090 units, beating out all other vehicles in its segment. It is continually the automaker’s best-selling model in its class. The popularity of the midsize sedan is attributed to responsive handling, fuel efficiency, and an optional 3.5-liter V6 engine that puts out an impressive 301 hp.

The compact Corolla sedan experienced YTD sales of 108,090 units with 29,939 units sold this month alone. J.D. Power attributes its legendary success to its “reliability, affordability, practicality, and value.” They explained, “the 2021 Corolla is popular with people who need reliable transportation at a reasonable cost.”

Both Toyota models managed to outsell most of the SUVs on the list, proving that sedans are still a viable option for consumers.

We tend to think of discontinued cars as ones that no one wanted. While that is typically true, there are some instances where a cool car gets the ax because it just didn’t sell enough to make the effort and production time worth it. These discontinued Chevrolet sedans might teach us something about the future of the segment.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV | Jeffrey Sauger for Chevrolet

The Alfa Romeo 4C and Ford Focus RS are great examples of very cool performance cars that buyers love. The problem was they were too aggressive and not fancy enough to warrant the cost for many people. However, these discontinued Chevrolet models are a bit more pedestrian and simply didn’t sell enough bulk to keep alive.

There is a pile of discontinued Chevrolet cars

Chevrolet has discontinued six vehicles recently. And, while they aren’t the most performance-oriented models, some of these are fairly prolific models. Five of the six discontinued models are sedans. While the SUV/ crossover market has dominated, the sedan has really taken a back seat in customers’ hearts.

Sedans were once the more civilized choice over the rugged, loud, and inefficient SUVs. Over the past decade or so, the SUV/cross has changed so much that many of them are just as, if not more, comfortable, fuel-efficient, and overall more useful. This has put the sedan in real dire straits, hence the five models getting chopped.

The Chevy Sonic

The 2020 Chevy Sonic is a very basic economy-grade compact sedan that really doubled down on the basic part. The 2020 model has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The standard and only engine option makes 138 hp going to the front wheels only. Like the lack of engine, options establish a theme across the rest of the car of very few options. Seeing as the Sonic isn’t meant to be a thrilling ride, its 34 mpg on the highway is its only real positive attribute. It’s not overly surprising that the Chevy Sonic sold poorly enough to get the can.

The Chevy Impala

Unlike the Sonic, the Chevy Impala name has been around for many decades and sold millions of units. Seeing the Impala get the ax is probably a better indication of the sedan struggle than any other on this list.

The Impala is a midsize sedan powered by a surprisingly beefy 305-hp V6 paired with a six-speed automatic. That big V6 doesn’t really do much other than suck up more gas than is necessary. The Impala only gets 22 mpg with no performance or utility to show for it.

Unfortunately, the overall package is little more than a styleless, inefficient, and relatively expensive sedan that fell from grace many, many years ago.

The Chevy Cruze

RELATED: Why the Cruze Is the Worst Chevy Vehicle to Buy

The discontinued Chevy Cruze was killed in 2019 and fell in a similar category as the Sonic. In fairness, the Cruze gets a bit more pep from its 153-hp turbo four paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. Car and Driver reviewed the Cruze in 2019 and heavily criticized the manual transmission, handling, and diesel engine option.

The Cruze didn’t seem to be a bad car per se, but like many of the others on this list, it just wasn’t enough of anything to drive sales enough to stay above water.

The Chevy SS

Let’s call a spade a spade; the now-discontinued Chevy SS muscle sedan is ugly. Dodge has proven many times over that if you slap a massive V8 in something and make it look sporty in some way, people will buy it. The Chevy SS has a 6.2-liter V8 making a massive 415 hp. The problem is, nothing about it looks cool.

The death of the Chevy SS is the perfect example of poor decision-making on Chevy’s part. Instead of building a performance-focused muscle car, Chevy built a gas-guzzling grandma car that was always doomed to fail.

The Chevy Volt

The decision to discontinue the Chevy Volt is the only one of these discontinued Chevys that feels a little more surprising. As the EV market continues to pick up steam, many people are interested but can’t swing the cost. The plug-in hybrids have been a big hit as a cheaper alternative.

The Chevy Volt was also a good example of the segment. It has a 53-mile range of pure electric power which really sends its efficiency into the stratosphere. The Volt is also well equipped. The now-discontinued Volt has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two USB ports, and a mobile hotspot, proximity entry with push-button start, and single-zone automatic climate control, all as standard features.

The 2021 Acura TLX offers comfort, performance, and safety in all measures. It’s one of the safest luxury sedan cars you can get in 2021. It earned itself an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation – one of the highest safety ratings any car can reach. That’s not an easy feat.

The Acura TLX is so suitable that even buying it as a used car gives you all the benefits. It is one of the best used Acura models you can buy that deliver both the quality of performance and safety.

The 2021 Acura TLX has ample safety ratings

The IIHS ran multiple tests on the Acura TLX, and it earned high scores in all of them. The IIHS gave it the Top Safety Pick+ for its overall test results, including results in various crash tests. The Acura earned the highest possible ratings in all tests, including a G+ in the LATCH child seat for its ease of use during testing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the TLX a five-star rating on all tests, such as the frontal crash, side crash, and rollover tests. U.S. News gave the Acura a 10/10 safety score, basing its score on the IIHS and the NTHSA ratings.

The 2021 TLX has a 272-hp VTEC turbocharged engine that delivers torque through the enter rev range. The engine is paired with a 10-speed transmission for sharper throttle response, seamless gear changes, and quicker acceleration, has a new double-wishbone front suspension, and an Adaptive Damper System that delivers powerful cornering grip and precision on almost any road surface.

The TLX also has an integrated Dynamics System that allows you to select from four modes to get the ultimate personalized performance, soften the dampers, and reduce engine noise, making the car a smooth, quiet ride with excellent efficiency and exceptional handling.

This luxury sedan was designed with comfort in mind. It has ambient cabin lighting that lets you create the perfect ambiance. The lighting is controlled by an easy-to-use touchpad and has 24 modes to choose from.

The TLX is also spacious, adding to its comfort. It has a cargo capacity of 13.5 cubic feet with all seats in place and ample space in both the front and rear seats. The interior also features Apple CarPlay integration and a Wi-Fi hotspot that can power up to seven devices at once.

The modern safety components integrated into the new 2021 TLX

Every 2021 Acura TLX has innovative safety and driver-assist technology – called AcuraWatch – that enhances the driver’s awareness, mitigates the severity of an impact, and helps avoid collisions. The driver also gets assistance from other technologies that helps improve the driver’s awareness from all sides.

The car has a means of anticipating and detecting unwanted vehicle intrusion. It also has an ignition disable device that prevents the engine from starting if any other key apart from the original manufacturer key isn’t used.

As compared to its predecessors, the TLX has head restraints that prevent whiplash in case of rear collision forces. These restraints actively react to the force and cradle the driver’s and passenger’s heads to reduce whiplash.

The car is equipped with front-impact airbags that prevent the driver’s and passengers’ heads during a frontal crash. It also has side-impact airbags to protect the torso, overhead, and knee airbags to protect the head and lower extremities, respectively, in an accident.

The 2021 TLX has a lot of safety tech, including the automatic emergency front braking system and anti-lock brakes that stop the tire from rotating under extreme braking and modulates brake pressure.

It also has stability control that reduces engine power or applies the brakes to prevent the driver from losing control when the vehicle’s handling limits are exceeded. The car also features a lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, a Road Departure Mitigation System, and a rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2021 Acura TLX is not like any other luxury sedan out there. Despite its appearance, this car doesn’t compromise on safety. It is packed full of safety features that prevent the driver and passengers from injury if an accident occurs; it’s no wonder it earned all the highest ratings from the IIHS and the NHTSA. Its performance and exterior and interior features also make it one of the best car models available.
