One of smoking’s many drawbacks is that it can destroy your car’s interior and make upholstery maintenance a big challenge. The smell of smoke can seep deep into the seats’ fabric, leaving its scent behind. The result, among other problems, can be a lowered resale value on your vehicle. Is this also true for vaping?

Many wonder whether vaping, which has become a popular alternative to smoking in recent years, can cause similar problems in vehicles. If you or someone in your household vapes regularly, read on for some tips to keep in mind when considering vaping in your car, truck, or SUV.

Is vaping a safe alternative to smoking?

Many people take up vaping because they’re under the impression that it’s a safe alternative to smoking. As Merck Manuals reminds us, after all, two out of three long-term users of cigarettes end up dying due to their nicotine addiction. The toxic chemicals in cigarettes end up making their way into the lungs and can cause cancer, emphysema, and similar ailments.

However, is vaping truly a safer way to get one’s nicotine fix? On the one hand, the toxic chemicals in e-cigarettes are indeed present in lower doses than in traditional tobacco cigarettes. On the other hand, these chemicals are nowhere near absent from vaping products.

Documented short-term effects of e-cigarettes include chronic cough, bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, and pneumonia. It also seems quite likely that vaping products will have serious long-term effects on their users as well. However, the research is still out on the subject.

Vaping is harmful to vehicle interiors

While the effects on users’ health are the most serious concerns centered around vaping, it can also have other negative consequences, including damage to car interiors

Quora users have noted, for example, that vaping in a vehicle can leave a sticky residue behind on windows. This can create a serious visibility hazard when driving. As some Reddit commenters have observed, the residue left behind by e-cigarettes can be especially challenging to deal with in the cold winter months, when it gets mistaken for normal window fogging until the defroster turns out to be powerless against it. If you smoke or frequently vape in your vehicle, you’ll likely also want to replace your cabin air filter more often than you might otherwise, as residue can build up there as well.

For additional safety, Smart Motorist reminds drivers to keep in mind that visibility is also affected by the fumes produced by e-cigarettes when vaping. They produce clouds of vapor much thicker than traditional cigarettes, a situation that can impede vision at the wheel.

Do these things if you vape while driving

Eciglopedia offers some helpful tips to keep in mind if you find yourself compelled to use an e-cigarette in your vehicle or someone else’s. First and most important, keep your windows down. This is the only real way to keep the sticky residue that vaping creates from building up on your windows. Vaping with your windows up is pretty much a guaranteed way to have some upcoming cleaning work on your hands.

If you do end up with residue on your windows, however, don’t despair. The best way to remove it and return to a safe state of visibility is to clean your windows with a combination of vinegar and water or a specialized glass cleaner.

All in all, vaping in your vehicle may be a better alternative than smoking, but it’s still not a great way to treat your car or your body. Particularly if you have children who travel with you frequently, Smart Motorist also offers a reminder that the effects of any e-cigarette residue absorbed into their bodies from seats are also unknown at this time.

Between launching a brand new electric truck and creating one-off project cars to honor the LBGTQ+ community, Ford is doing their part to help bring some fun to some kids who need it. Last year, Ford launched their own eSports initiative called “Team Fordzilla.”

Team Fordzilla is made up of an international roster of the top YouTube gaming personalities, eSports athletes, and motorsport athletes, including Indy Car series driver Alex Palou. The Team competes in eSports race events and other motorsport events and is all backed by Ford. Recently, Team Fordzilla launched a program to bring accessible gaming to youth in the United Kingdom in an innovative way. Thus, the “Gaming Transit” was born.

The Ford Transit van is one of the brand’s most successful vehicles due to its malleable nature. The Transit can be outfitted from the factory with use cases covering everything from cargo purposes for businesses to luxurious interiors for RV use. The Transit’s boxy shape and large dimensions make it a versatile vehicle for several types of interior and exterior modifications.

When Team Fordzilla wanted to find a way to bring accessible gaming to youth who need it, they decided that the Ford Transit would be the perfect foundation. Together with design and engineering company MS-RT, Team Fordzilla designed the Gaming Transit into the ultimate mobile video game station. MS-RT specializes in taking Ford Transit vans and turning them into custom, motorsport-inspired vehicles. One of their specialties is turning Transit vans into support cars that carry spare parts and other necessities that a team might need during a stage rally.

The Gaming Transit is a different beast entirely. The interior of the Gaming Transit houses three gaming suites. Each suite is separated by dividers and has germ-resistant medical-grade laminate finishes. Each suite is also equipped with an Xbox Series S console connected to 32-inch gaming monitors. The Gaming Transit has an external station that features two racing simulator rigs that utilize dual-screen setups for more immersion.

The Gaming Transit will visit different hospitals and special education needs schools around the U.K. to bring gaming to kids with limited mobility. To make the gaming suites as accessible as possible, each one features the Xbox Adaptive controller, which allows external buttons and joysticks to be installed so that anyone with limited dexterity can still easily use them.

Team Fordzilla reached out to vehicle modifier Allied Mobility to install a wheelchair lift and folding ramp to make the van wheelchair accessible with easy entry and exit. The interior leather seats within the gaming suites can fold away to make room for wheelchairs as well.

Mandy Dean, Director Commercial Vehicles Ford of Britain and Ireland said, “Gaming Transit has already been a massive success in Europe. It was so heartening to see how much fun it can bring to children and we’re looking forward to our leg of the tour, visiting hospices and schools across the UK, that are truly remarkable in their work with special educational needs children.”

Kudos to Team Fordzilla. It is great to see car customization and gaming come together for a great cause. We hope that Ford and other manufacturers explore executing programs like this in other countries on a broader scale in the future.

Off-road capable vehicles are burgeoning in popularity these days. They capture the American spirit of wandering out into the wilderness and exploring new frontiers. Also, with everyone cooped up during the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an undeniable appeal for venturing into wide-open spaces. Previously, Subaru targeted this off-road demand with its Wilderness line of vehicles with enhanced off-road features. Now, Honda is following suit with its off-road-focused Trailsport models. Read more to find out when the Honda Trailsport models will be released.

Honda Trailsport models release date

Honda announced that the Trailsport models will be launched in Fall 2021. The automaker didn’t give a specific release date beyond this period of time.

What off-road features are in the Honda Trailsport models?

The Trailsport models will be added to the trim lineup of the Honda light-duty truck models. They will feature a rugged design and enhanced off-road capabilities. Honda aims to make them the pinnacle of off-road prowess, durability, and diversity for its light-duty truck lineup.

Honda has a multi-year plan for the Trailsport models. The models released this fall will have durable cladding and rugged front and rear styling. Inside the Trailsport models, the cabin will have unique interior design elements, such as signature all-weather mats and high-contrast orange stitching. The Honda Trailsport models will also have a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system. It provides confident traction when heading off the beaten path while providing excellent driving dynamics for on-road driving.

In future years, the Trailsport models will have even greater off-road capabilities. This will be achieved with feature additions and upgrades, including underbody protection, an off-road-tuned suspension, full-size spare tires, and more aggressive tires. Also, Honda plans on re-engineering the Trailsport models to elevate the capabilities of the all-wheel drive system. Additionally, future Trailsport models will have a higher ground clearance.

“TrailSport represents the next chapter in our rugged direction and will bring exclusive styling to our existing light trucks that will appeal to buyers seeking adventure. Our U.S. engineering team is leveraging more than 20 years of experience creating highly capable light trucks to develop this new series of adventure-ready vehicles.”

Honda didn’t specify which models would get the Trailsport treatment. The automaker only stated that it would apply to the light-duty truck lineup.

However, given that the Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup truck is featured in the teaser video, that is an obvious choice. Also, it would not be a stretch to say that the Honda Pilot and Passport SUVs will also get Ridgeline trims. When the Trailsport trims are added to the Honda model lineup, they will be the highest-ranking trims for the respective models.

While details are sparse, the Honda Trailsport looks promising. It gives off-road enthusiasts more choices for an off-road capable vehicle. Also, the Transport models have the backing of a five-decade Honda legacy of off-road engineering, as well as two decades of experience with light-duty trucks.

The BMW Art Car program is an indicator that the brand goes to great lengths to keep things fresh when marketing its vehicles. The brand is not afraid to explore non-endemic opportunities like getting involved in eSports, but BMW also sticks to the traditional avenues like motorsports. BMW has been known to get involved with Hollywood from time to time, like featuring its cars in James Bond movies, or more recently, the hit film Shang-Chi: The Legend Of The Ten Rings from Marvel Studios.

The fact that BMW continues to explore such non-traditional marketing strategies indicates that it seems to be working. BMW may be willing to experiment, but it would not pump resources into an unsuccessful campaign.

Exploring marketing opportunities in pop culture is not a new strategy for BMW. For decades BMW Motorsports has joined with artists to create limited-edition racing liveries known as “art cars.” BMW’s art car program has effectively helped BMW reach a new audience by aligning themselves with personalities respected in the artist community. Each Art Car that has resulted from these partnerships has garnered significant positive publicity for BMW.

There is also the bonus that each Art Car tends to hit at the heart of the car enthusiast community as special BMW models are often chosen to be subjects of the Art Car program. Who can forget the BMW M1 Art Car by Andy Warhol? Then there is the legendary widebody BMW 3.0 CSL Art Car by Alexander Calder.

Depending on your interests, the name Jeff Koons may sound familiar, or it may not. Koons is an American artist known for addressing pop culture and his giant sculptures of balloon animals made from steel and polished to a mirror finish. Koons’ art is very distinctive, if nothing else, which has proven to be an advantage for the artist as his work is easily recognizable and distinctive.

In 2010 Koons was tapped to create an Art Car livery applied to a BMW M3 GT2 race car. Koons’ creation for the M3 was a bold display of streaking colors. If we had to compare, we would say to imagine a rainbow version of the “lightspeed” effect from Star Wars. It may sound strange, but the final result is visually impressive, especially when seen on a race car at speed.

Koons’ original M3 GT2 Art Car was so successful that BMW had asked the artist to return to create another. This time, BMW is doing things differently. Artists generally did previous Art Car liveries on race cars. This time Koons will be producing an original creation that is based on a road car. Specifically, the BMW M850i xDrive Grand Coupe.

“I am really thrilled and honoured about the opportunity to work with BMW again and to create a special edition car,” said Koons. “I was thinking very intensely about it: What is the essence of the 8 Series Gran Coupe? What is the essence of power? How to create something that exemplifies all the energy of the BMW 8 Series that is also able to touch upon the human element? Again, it’s just a wonderful opportunity to be working as part of the BMW family again.”

The car will be revealed next year, February 2022, during a ceremony in Munich, Germany. So, we’ll have to wait until then to see what Koons has come up with. It will be interesting to see his take on a road car.
