During the summer of 2021, the European Union proposed banning the production of new combustion engines by 2035. Italy has requested an exemption to the EU combustion ban. The country aims to protect its “niche” supercar manufacturers Ferrari and Lamborghini. The CEO of Porsche immediately fired back, calling decarbonization a “global issue” and insisting “everyone has to contribute.”

In July 2021, the European Union proposed a 55% reduction in new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2030 and a 100% reduction by 2035. As a result, selling new internal combustion vehicles in the Union may be illegal after 2035. The EU Parliment still has to vote on the ban.

The proposed EU combustion ban would accelerate the current target: a 37.5% reduction by 2030. Additionally, the law would make the 27-country European Union the largest block of countries to pass a 100% ban.

The EU Commission’s proposal made headlines worldwide. However, it also drew criticism from European member countries and some attacks from automakers.

Italy seeks an exception for boutique manufacturers: Lamborghini and Ferrari

Supercars are one of Italy’s main exports. So it is not surprising that the European country is in talks with the European Union to write an exception into the proposed ban for the “niche” supercar market.

Roberto Cingolani is an Italian minister for ecological transition. He told Bloomberg, “There is a clear awareness about the need for a transition toward electric mobility.” Consequently, he touted Italy’s battery-producing “giga-factory program” as helping the transition.

Cingolani is also a retired director of Ferrari. He argued that Italian bespoke automakers produce so few vehicles, they have little impact on climate change. He called the industry “a niche.”

Cingolani revealed, “there is an ongoing discussion with the EU Commission.” Then, Cingolani said an exemption “is something we are discussing with other partners in Europe.” Finally, he concluded, “I am convinced there will not be a problem.” A European Union spokesman declined to respond to Cingolani’s comments

Lamborghini: for us, the V12 is ‘fundamental’

No current Ferrari officials have responded to the proposed EU combustion ban. Fuel-efficient hybrid race cars have dominated Formula One since 2009. In 2013, Ferrari unveiled the first full hybrid Italian supercar: the La Ferrari.

Lamborghini’s Chief Technology Officer, Maurizio Reggiani, told The Drive he “The V12 is our heritage.” He then specified, “I believe what we sell is emotion, and part of that emotion comes from the sound of the engine.” He added, “For us, it’s fundamental to continue to use a V12 engine.”

Lamborghini has vowed to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025. Therefore, the manufacturer is pursuing more plug-in hybrid Lamborghini drivetrains.

Porsche CEO disagrees: ‘Everybody has to contribute.’

Oliver Blume is the CEO of Porsche. In September 2021, he appeared in Munich. The automaker was debuting upcoming models at the International Mobility Show. Bloomberg asked him about the EU combustion ban. Blume did not seem worried and said, “electric in the next decade will be unbeatable.”

Porsche has nimbly pivoted towards electrification; the company’s electric sportscar, the four-door Taycan, was rated one of the most beautiful sedans of 2021.

When asked point-blank about an exemption from the ban for Ferrari and Lamborghini, Blume did not mince words. Instead, he said, “De-carbonization is a global question and everybody has to contribute.”

Chevy just unveiled the restyled 2022 Silverado. Those not thrilled about the fascia and interior may or may not be satisfied with the changes. The new ZR2 off-road version, SuperCruise, and other changes will start popping into dealerships early next year.

GM sells more Silverado pickups than any other vehicle it makes

2022 Chevy Silverado | GM

This is arguably the most important vehicle that General Motors sells. In the US it is the best-selling vehicle GM makes. But production numbers still lag behind the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

What may or may not pull the Silverado’s numbers up will be an all-electric version. But it is not expected before 2023. So the new, wider fascia and grille design along with the updated interior will have to suffice. But don’t forget the ZR2.

For 2022 the Silverado gets the rugged ZR2 off-road model

This will be the first time the ZR2 option will land on a Silverado. Chevy has been missing its own Ford Raptor and Ram TRX. To this point, the Z71 off-road option was the big dog. And it or the Trail Boss represent 60-percent of all Silverado sales. So most buyers are looking for that rugged, off-road capability.

All Silverado trim packages will feature the redesigned interior, except base models. The new interior includes a wide instrument panel and a better center console. Electric shift control is available on most Silverado trims.

There is also a 13.4-inch diagonal touch screen along with a new 12.3-inch diagonal digital instrument cluster. And it is also configurable. Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play are all built into the system. They all function with either Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

GM’s SuperCruise will also be a Silverado option

For the first time in a Chevy truck will be the SuperCruise driver-assist feature. It will be offered on the High Country models. The GMC Sierra will also have SuperCruise. It includes Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change when not towing a trailer.

With 20-percent more torque the 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output engine is the base powerplant. It is capable of towing 9,600 pounds. With the optional Duramax three-liter Turbo-Diesel engine towing capacity increases to 13,300 pounds.

In 2021 sales so far are up 8.3-percent over last year

For the first half of 2021 Chevy has sold 286,410 Silverados. That’s an increase of 8.3-percent. So it is on the way to hit high numbers if the microchip shortage doesn’t scuttle production for the last half of the year.

“We’ve been selling the heck out of the current truck and we’ve got some great improvements here,” Steve Carlisle, president of GM North America, told Automotive News. “Our goal here is to continue to dominate with the pickups and Silverado in particular.”

Mazda’s perfect little sports car, the MX-5 Miata began life in 1989 and hasn’t changed much. Fundamentally, it’s always used a front mid-mounted naturally aspirated inline-four, powering the rear wheels, under a soft top and two seats, with a manual transmission in between. Owners always praise its “50/50” weight distribution. Indeed the car handles like a dream. There’s certainly not enough power to satisfy V8-bred shenanigan mongering, but for its lightweight platform, the engine has almost always had enough power to conjure a ton of fun behind the wheel. Here’s a look at what each generation had to offer.

NA Generation: lightest Miata ever made

At first Mazda was to copy Toyota’s MR2 layout, which was rear-mounted, rear-wheel-drive. Thankfully Mazda opted for the front-engine mounting. NA Miatas started with 1.6-liter inline-four engines producing 114 horsepower, and ended with 1.8-liters producing 133 horsepower, and an optional Torsen limited-slip differential. Not bad for a car that weighed just over 2,100 pounds.

The interior is as tight as can be expected. Taller drivers should be aware that the top edge of the windshield has a good chance of smacking them in the forehead if they aren’t careful. There were a few special editions peppered into the NA generation. One of which hit the 1993 model year, dubbed the Limited Edition (LE). It got aluminum wheels and Bilstein suspension, along with a few other aesthetic choices like a body kit and red seatbelts.

NB Generation: the Miata XKR

After 10 years the NB generation arrived, with a different but not necessarily new look. The popup headlights were ditched for fixed sideways tear-drops, and the body seems sleeker and closer to a stubbly Jaguar XKR. NB Miatas got the same 1.8-liter engine but with 140 horsepower, mated to a five-speed transmission as standard.

2001 saw a few changes, notably to the engine which made 155 horsepower. Other changes included 15-inch wheels and variable valve intake timing. Special editions once again featured for this generation, including 16-inch aluminum wheels and a six-speed manual transmission.

One of the biggest special editions to ever hit a Miata came in 2004, in the name of Mazdaspeed. This edition turbocharged the engine to send 178 horsepower to a torque-sensing limited-slip differential, perched the car on 17-inch wheels, and stiffened and lowered the suspension.

NC Generation: heavy but powerful

The third “NC” generation Miata featured the car’s biggest departure from its original style. Arguably one of the ugliest Miatas, it performed better than the previous two generations. Its engine was upgraded to 2.0-liters pumping 170 horsepower to the rear wheels, and used a timing chain instead of a belt, as was the case with previous generations. The Miata leapt into a more elegant class with the NC generation, especially considering its retractable hardtop models in 2007.

The NC Miata went largely unchanged until 2013 when it got the Club trim. It gave the car a sixth gear for manual versions, as well as a limited slip differential and sport-tuned Bilstein suspension.

ND Generation: back to classic Miata roots

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Nav..

The Miata’s latest generation brought the car back to its roots. Its shorter than NA Miatas and almost as light. It looks more aggressive than any other Miata, with sharp contours and an angry front end. It looks unique from all other generations. However, it retains almost the same sensations.

Its interior is just as cramped, but the throttle and steering are just as responsive. It’s a more solid, complete package than ever before. Mazda made few changes to the ND, save for in 2019 when it upped the horsepower to 181, and raised the redline to 7500. It’s more than enough power for the platform

Is any one generation better than the other?

A lot of factors go into deciding which generation Miata to purchase. The first generation is the lightest, but also the least powerful. The most recent is almost as light, far more powerful, but also many more times as expensive. The NB seems to be a good compromise between adequate, yet affordable power. Its style isn’t as unique as the current, or even the NC generations, but it handles just as well as the others. Whichever generation you choose, you can’t really go wrong.

The new Maserati Grecale SUV is coming soon, but a Polish website called Allegro has revealed some design details early. Thanks to teasers we already have a general idea of what the vehicle will look like, but nothing completely concrete. By listing parts of the Maserati Grecale for sale on its website, Allegro has revealed details the Italian automaker didn’t want us to see yet. Here are the Maserati Grecale SUV leaked parts from Allegro.

Which Maserati Grecale parts have been leaked?

Maserati Grecale Parts | Allegro

What do individual leaked parts really show us? Surely it isn’t enough to give us an idea of what the Grecale will look like. The front bumper, grille, headlights, taillights, front quarter panels, and three different hoods are all listed. We can get a rough mental picture based on the design details within each individual part. The grille is similar to what you’d expect from any Maserati. The signature vertical slats line the grille with the logo prominently displayed in the center, and the front bumper has a mesh design. The head and taillights don’t give much away without seeing them on the vehicle, but the unique shape will paint a picture in your head.

We know exactly what the steering wheel looks like because one of the listed parts is an entire steering wheel. A clean design with 7-or-8 buttons on each side surrounding the centered Maserati logo in a standard steering wheel shape. We also know exactly what wheels and tires the Grecale will have because four of them are listed on the website. The tires are Bridgestone Potenza Sport measuring 255/40R21 and 295/35R21 in the rear. Both wheels and tires are notably larger than most SUVs of this size.

What do we know about the Maserati Grecale?

A dark silhouette teases the new 2022 Maserati Grecale
2022 Maserati Grecale Teaser | Maserati

Only teasers have shown the upcoming 2022 Maserati Grecale up until now. The Grecale is part of Maserati’s plan to release 10 new or heavily redesigned models by 2023. It will slot in under the mid-size Levante SUV. CarandDriver predicts it will start around $43,000, priced similarly to the BMW X3 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The Grecale will have gas, all-electric, and hybrid powertrains available. Maserati hopes to get back on the radar of luxury vehicles for buyers with Grecale and other new models. A possible engine for the gas version of the Grecale could be the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder as seen under the hood of the Stelvio.

The possibility of variety for the vehicle, whether electric or not, gives a lot of options for the small SUV. Competing with other luxury brands will be difficult, but Maserati is moving in the right direction to reestablish itself. With vehicles like the BMW X3, Acura RDX, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q5, and even the Volvo XC60 classified as luxury compact SUVs, there’s plenty of competition. Small SUVs are very popular due to their convenient amount of space and significantly better gas mileage than larger alternatives. The Maserati Grecale SUV leaked parts listed online can be found on Allegro’s website.
