Do diesel fuel additives really work, or are they just expensive snake oil? With diesel prices remaining painfully high, improving fuel economy, reducing regens and protecting expensive emissions equipment could make a meaningful difference for diesel truck owners.

In this video, Tim Esterdahl speaks with Power Service Products chemist Jessica Crabtree about how diesel fuel additives are tested and what they can potentially do inside a modern diesel engine.

Crabtree explains how detergents can clean diesel injectors, improve combustion and reduce soot traveling through the EGR, turbocharger and diesel particulate filter. She also discusses preliminary testing involving eight 3.0-liter Duramax diesel trucks that has shown an average fuel economy improvement of approximately 15%. That field trial is still underway, and individual results can vary considerably.

The conversation also covers:

How quickly dirty diesel injectors can be cleaned
Whether additives can reduce DPF regeneration frequency
Potential reductions in DEF consumption
How additives affect the EGR and turbocharger
Why older diesel trucks may show larger improvements
The difference between laboratory testing and YouTube garage testing
A Peterbilt case study that improved from 5.9 to 8 mpg

A routine vehicle review turned into one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in 15 years of testing press vehicles.

A Flock camera AI system incorrectly flagged the Jaguar Land Rover press vehicle I was driving as stolen. That mistake led to a 90-minute traffic stop in western Nebraska while officers tried to determine why the license plate and VIN didn't match what their system expected.

The police officer handled the situation professionally. The real problem was an AI-powered license plate system, a police report with incorrect information and a quirk of manufacturer press vehicles that most people, including many officers, never encounter.

In this video I explain:
• How a Flock camera AI error triggered the traffic stop
• Why the VIN on manufacturer press vehicles often doesn't appear in police databases
• How automaker fleet license plates actually work
• Why this same issue has affected other automotive journalists
• What needs to change so this doesn't keep happening

If you've ever wondered how accurate AI-powered license plate readers really are, this story is worth watching.

The Subaru Forester has earned a reputation as a sensible, dependable SUV, but owners and used-vehicle shoppers still have several known problems to consider.

In this video, we examine the recalls, technical service bulletins, and frequently reported issues affecting 2019-2026 Subaru Forester models. These concerns range from dead batteries and frozen infotainment screens to CVT warranty extensions, thermal control valve failures, and moonroof glass that may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle.

The good news is that the Forester does not appear to suffer from widespread catastrophic engine or transmission failures. Many of these problems are also covered by recalls or extended warranties, but owners need to know what to ask about.

You can also check your specific vehicle for open recalls by entering its VIN at NHTSA.gov.

$85,000 buys a lot of truck, but which one would get your money?

In this short, we compare a Ford half-ton with the twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost against a GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate with the 3.0L Duramax diesel. Better fuel economy, fancy tailgates, work-ready interiors, weird luxury badging, and yes, even a quick review from the cows on that Vader Chrome.

So if you had the cash, would you spend the extra money on the GMC, or stick with the Ford?

Watch the video and let us know which truck you’re taking.
